Museu Municipal de Peniche, is a pretty small museum which is worth a quick visit. Basically the museum houses evidence of the political prison of Salazar’s dictatorship in the 20th century.

The museum is in two parts. The town museum and sea bed finds were interesting but the real star is the museum to the resistance against fascism. It is all too easy to forget that large parts of Europe were still in Fascist government well into our life times . This is moving record of, and tribute to, those who resisted in Portugal. Well worth a visit.

Although we did not visit the museum on this trip we went inside the fortress (free entry) which has a long and interesting history as a defense for the town of Peniche. I did not, however, know until this visit that it was used as a high security political prison between 1930 and 1974, during the Portuguese dictatorship. None of the information is in English, which is a shame, however we still managed to get the gist of the history of the fortress and found it very atmospheric and moving. A surprisingly fascinating place to visit with some lovely views over the coastline.

The most run down, damp un welcoming museum we have ever been inside A lot of the artifacts are in a very poor state..but this is what we mostly encountered in Portugal.

Visited but didn't have too much time to stay. It was worth the trip. Loved walking around the grounds.

This museum is free but really does not have much to offer
It did have one famous jail break in 1960 of Alvaro Cunhal
Not worth a detour

Could be a lot better as a museum and it's collections and English explanations , however it's a very interesting visit in reagrda to Portugese history and especially when it was used as a prison under the Salazar regime. You only get to see the cells and other parts of the fort if you pay to enter the museum and it's worth it.

The museum in itself isn't that great or pretty. However, their collection and the history of the building is nice. Unfortunately, the majority of the museum is only in Portugese and only few things are in English. However, the €1.60 was definitely worth it.
