My husband booked a tour and wine tasting here for our Valentine’s day trip. It was only the two of us. We started at 3 PM and spent about two hours there. Our guide was Lorenzo, a nice young sommelier who gave us a quick tour around, explaining how this winery basically introduced dry Sagrantino to the international wine stage. The tour was just touching the surface but for the first time ever we happened to see the wine bottling and it was so much fun! In the tasting room we were offered three wines (one white and two reds) with a plate of fresh bread with their own olive oil (so delicious!!!) and one plate each of cheese and meat cuts (all local, of course!). We completely fell in love with Arnaldo Caprai’s Montefalco Rosso Vigna Flaminia Maremmana 2017! From the snacks our favorite was ciauscolo (we just love it in general; it’s a soft Umbrian sausage). But everything else was great too. Then another couple entered the tasting room and while Lorenzo was busy with them we went to the terrace. It was a beautiful warm day with sun covering the vineyards and when we were done, we were recommended to go further in the field to see the viewing point that gives you a nice observation of the tiny lake nearby and the winery itself. Very charming. The wine prices are a bit above the average and they also have special edition bottles of Sagrantino with labels made specially for them by an artist, who portrays Petrarca, Dante and Giotto in modern manner, three famous figures that are painted on the fresco of the church in the town of Montefalco (the part of the sales go to its restoration).

This is a beautiful winery in Umbria, near Assisi. The staff was friendly, helpful, and informative (we tried our Italian, but they spoke English too). We had a tasting first (they could combine it either way with the tour), loved the 100 % sagrantino and the 100% sangiovese, saw the French oak barrels, the wine works in operation (they can produce 3000 bottles an hour), and enjoyed the spectacular view of the mountains & vineyard. They also make delicious olive oils that we sampled with their breads. We came away with about 10 bottles of wine, and a couple bottles/cans of olive oil.

We dropped by on our way to Montefalco in the morning, without an appointment. Btw I don't understand some of the bit of "moaning" reviews that I saw, because in my view the staff is very friendly and flexible. They gave us a small, very informative tour even though we had not booked. It was very interesting to hear what they explained and to see the compound. We could take pictures as well. We tasted about 8 wines and 2 olive oils and we bought some nice bottles, I specifically liked the the Grechetto Grecante 2018, and the Montefalco Rosso Riserva 2015 and Sagrantino Val di Maggio 2014.

Visited the vineyard after lunch in Montefalco. Stunning location for a beautiful vineyard and had a wonderful tour guide in Camilla who spoke perfect English. The tour was short but very enjoyable and it was very interesting to hear of the different grape varieties and the story behind the production and the grapes. Really worth a visit!
