My wife and I took a walking food tour of Church Hill today on a beautiful afternoon. We visited five places (Nile, 8 1/2, Liberty Public House, the Proper Pie Company and Sub Rosa Bakery). We highly recommend it. The tour was conducted by a pleasant p, knowledgeable guide.

A friend had recommended this activity to me since she knew I love to talk about the Richmond restaurant scene and try new places. I had so much fun! Although three of the six places we visited were restaurants I'd already had the opportunity to check -out, this was a totally different experience. I loved meeting the restaurant owners and chefs. I loved hearing their stories. Richmond has so many hidden gems and this tour confirmed what I already knew. The Arts District tour was great not only for the food but also for tidbits of Richmond history. Every single food sampling was delicious and the offerings were varied and exciting every time. We visited Pops Market, J Kogi, Mama J's, Stoplight Gelato, Aloha Catering and Wong Gonzales. The quote of the day was once you've visited you are family. Can't wait to return for Sunday dinner with the family in the Grace Street/Jackson Ward area.

Stephanie, I'm thrilled to hear you'll take the family back for dinner! I feel like we've done our jobs if we can convince a local to return to one of the restaurants we've visited. I also have to thank you for the Richmond Food Scene quiz you gave me after our tour - I hope I passed with some great new spots for you to try! - Brian

Our company sponsors a team-building activity every year, and we have chosen River City Food Tours for the last 4 years. They mix in history and amazing restaurants with fabulous food! Each tour I have been on, I learn something new about RVA or the area of town we tour. The next time I have someone in from out of town, I am definitely rebooking! Highly recommend Brian and his team - so so fun!

One of our favorite groups! :) Well see you next year, and we should even have a new neighborhood to explore by then! - Brian

Totally enjoyed the great food and company on this September afternoon doing the Carytown food tour. Our group of 14 was a good size for everyone to get to chat with each other. Lyndsay, our guide, was terrific. The pace of going through the six places did not feel rushed - we were able to enjoy and savor the dishes. I liked that the tasting menu showcased something unique to each restaurant. There were items we tried that if I were ordering for myself may not have been my top choice... but they were really good! The restaurants were very efficient - our reserved spots were ready, we each had cold refreshing glasses of water, and our assigned server was there in case you want to order additional drinks. And do not forget the coupons at the end of the tour booklet they - I got some extra cupcakes because of that :)

This tour was amazing! I booked it for a birthday with 2 friends and we ended up being the only people on the tour that day (an August Friday before college went back to session). Our tour guide, Rachel, was so nice and fun, we had just got to Richmond that morning and she was able to give us great advice on where to go out, sites to see, the can't miss locations, etc.. We went to 6 restaurants and were able to talk to the proprietors about the history of the venues/neighborhood and sample many different types of food. We ate and drank our way around the Arts District for 3 hours and loved it so much that we went back to one of the restaurants (Wong Gonzalez) for dinner that night and were able to use our complementary coupon :) I would highly recommend this tour and make sure you get Rachel!

I went on the Arts District tour and had a wonderful time. This tour is 2pm-5pm so it is a late lunch and early dinner. We hit 6 places, all with unique and different food offerings, all delicious. There is a little bit of history and culture discussed by the tour guide but mostly we learned about the neighborhoods and the restaurants we visited. I was particularly fond of the Greenleaf’s Pool Room stop because we got a demonstration of how to shoot pool. Mama J’s was another highlight since the soul food was delicious and this is a difficult restaurant to get a seat at (frequent 2 hour waits). This is a terrific food tour company.

M., I love that we frequently get to surprise our guests with the pool demo, such a cool "non-food" thing. I'm glad you had a great time and enjoyed all six stops! - Brian

The River City Food Tours are an excellent way to explore Richmond since you get to try some great local places (cafes, bakeries, restaurants), and you get to hear the history of the neighborhood you're walking through. The Church Hill Food Tour focuses on the oldest district of the city that has some great houses and history, but the best part was the food. We went to a wood-fired bakery, an Ethiopian restaurant, a pizza place and several more - all were delicious and I can't wait to go back to try them all again!

I was in town for the weekend with my boyfriend and there was only one slot left for the food tour. I emailed Brian, he responded quickly, and opened an extra slot so that my boyfriend and I could a tour together.

I toured with Rachel who was an excellent guide- very knowledgeable, personable, and engaging!

The food at each stop was delicious and the restaurant staff was delightful (notably at Greenleaf, Stoplight, and Lift.) Meat LOVER here, but the standout dish was the veggie sandwich at Lift. My boyfriend and I are still talking about them! If they're not serving them during your tour then I'd definitely suggest ordering one (on your way in)!

Overall, it was a great experience and I can't wait to check out the Carytown tour next time I'm in town!
