This is a great art museum to visit. When you walk in the entrance, the bathrooms are on your right and the gift store is on the left. Then you come to a large hallway/corridor which is the entrance to each exhibit. Explore! Please note that this museum is free to visit but there is usually at least one exhibit... More

This collection, culled from other institutions and private collections, is wonderful: inspiring and challenging. The Gordon Parks show, from the museum's permanent collection, is also excellent. I know from previous visits that the permanent collection, especially of 21st century art, is well worth your time.

I'm a RVA resident, and VMFA is just a wonderful place to go on my own or to take visitors. Amuse Restaurant on the third floor has great food and a really nice relaxed atmosphere. Best Cafe on the first floor is "fast casual" but still delightful with very good food selections.

Extraordinary art pieces are exhibited here in ways to invite you to share the intention and mood evoked by historic and contemporary artists. The easy access, lighting, display, seating, open and intimate spaces make for a very educational and provocative experience for interpretation. The staff is as genuinely warm as the lighting is radiant or cooling; the café, which opens... More

I would have visited this even if I had had to pay (entry is free). Some fantastic art, wonderful building and if you're hungry they have a restaurant and cafe. Well worth the visit!

What a beautiful museum with ever changing exhibits. I also love the gift shop for local artisans jewelry and paintings. The Amuse cafe was also excellent!

The folks here think that you work for them rather than they work for you. The reception especially for teens is not always pleasant.

This museum has a great, deep and varied collection. And admission to the permanent collection is always free. This recent visit was the first in more than ten years, and there had been quite a large addition. Honestly, the organization of the collections, and way finding seems kind of haphazard. Even with a map, and asking gallery attendants, i got... More

Thank you for your comments regarding navigation and wayfinding throughout the museum. We're always working to improve our wayfinding efforts and recently have begun putting out additional signage to assist in this area. Currently there's been some construction going on in the museum as we prepare to reinstall our Faberge and Russian decorative arts collection in its new home. This... More
