- Rochelle FRandolph, New Jersey940 contributionsBetter to bike; strange walkWe needed to stretch our legs on our long ride north so stopped in Richmond to do canal walk based on so many positive comments. Walk is well paved both on 17th to 5th street which does run right next to water. The other way towards Grisham park (?) is very noisy with cars as it goes next to road. - you can barely see canal. The city has done very nice planting along this part as the flowers are beautiful and thriving.Visited July 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2020
- Matt PGainesville, Virginia1,389 contributionsA very nice walkRichmond has done a good job of cleaning up certain parts of their city. This is one that is done very well. It is very pleasant walking along the canal. Ther are many locations where you can walk on the path. Also after the walk there are very good restaurants that you can go to.Visited February 2020Written March 15, 2020
- SpanishteacherMD1,633 contributionsIf you like to walk and be outdoors, Canal Walk is perfect for you.Perfect for folks who love to walk. My wife and I walked the entire day. She had never been to this part of Richmond before. By the end of the day, she was thrilled to have had the chance to walk everywhere, to experience everything that Canal Walk has to offer. Plenty of people out walking, taking their dog for a stroll, bike riding with family, going for a jog or run, folks taking pictures, having a picnic...Canal Walk is awesome. And on a day like we had, temperatures in the 70s, no humidity, a fresh breeze and deep blue skies, there was nothing better than to walk the Canal quite literally all day. Signage everywhere, so if you're into interpretive experiences, this is the place for you. Easy to find, it goes on forever. Put on your walking shoes and bring your camera so that you can capture all that Canal Walk has to offer.Visited June 2022Written June 20, 2022

- amulder2004Lynchburg, Virginia8 contributionsCanal walk is worth the timeWe took the canal walk tour last year. It was so much more than I had expected. A gentle glide down the canal, multi layer train tracks, old and interesting buildings to look at and hear about... We walked the entire length of the suggested tour. A nice, pleasant, and not at all strenous walk. Kids were interested in the sites, too.Written May 24, 2004

We were delighted to be immersed into a scenic, attractive and well maintained pathway along the shores of this Urban Jungle. Just be aware you are in an urban area and might encounter some "sketchy" characters along the way. I recommend you park at Great Shiplock Park and walk to Belle Island. Check out the The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar and grab a lunch on Cary Street.Visited October 2014Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2014
- Plunket B1 contributionWalk was great but be aware...Yes the walk was very fun and interesting. We had three kids and they had a blast. However, if you are doing the walk with kids make sure you have a bathroom plan. The bathroom at the Canal Cafe blew up so we asked security in the Troutman Sanders building --- they refused to help three children who needed to go. In fact I thought the people in at the building's front desk were about the rudest I'd met in quite sometime.Visited January 2013Traveled with familyWritten January 22, 2013

My wife and I went for our25th anniversary and the Canal Walk was something we were looking forward to. I guess, from what I had read, I was expecting something really special. True, it was a nice walk, but the canal did not appear to be anything particularly special. The boat we had read about was not running on the day we were there, otherwise, we might have found it more interesting. We weren't quite sure where to enter the area as nothing appeared to be marked (we entered at the south end of the walk) and walked for about an hour loop from The Berkley, where we were staying; frankly, the walk back to The Berkley via Cary Street was much more interesting. We never ventured to the buildings where we assumed there were some shops because we had already walked enough at that point and seen very little; from the top of the stairway that I assume led to the shops, it appeared nothing was open. The area desperately needs some signage/maps.

Richmond's Canal Walk features four centuries of the state capitol's history depicted through fascinating historic medallions, statues, and exhibits. Beautiful and engaging!

Me and my family decided to take a walk along the Canal, which is located near downtown Richmond, Virginia, and we also took a Tour Boat Ride along the Canal (June 7, 2014). The walk was nice, where there are a couple of nice pedestrian foot bridges to walk over the Canal from one side to the other, there are decent walking paths along the way. In your walk you will see that there are some historical looking buildings that were once Tobacco Warehouses back in the 17th and 18th Centuries, but today some of those Warehouses have become very nice updated Lofts and apartments for residents, as well as some have become restaurants/Bars. The walk was nice, but I must say that there are some spaces that look like they can use some more designing for a better look and experience. For the most part what you get is just the Canal to walk along and not a whole lot more than that on your walk or ride.
The Boat tour was nice, you see all you see basically on foot, but your in the tour boat and actually on the water in the Canal. What makes the tour boat nice is that you get to have a Tour Guide tell you and point out to you all the history involving the Canal and its buildings/landmarks, etc. Again, its not a whole lot to see, but it is something worth your time, and the boat ride is very cheap ($6.00 for adults, and children prices and senior prices are lower). The Boat is large but the seating is very very tight, you can bump knees with those sitting across from you, and it is tight next to you in seating as well, but the ride is short.
The Canal Walk also allows people to come through on Segways & Bikes, there are some parts of the walk that don't have railings along the Canal, so be careful of little ones running off without you being close by them. If you are handicapped, where walking is a problem for you or if you are in a wheelchair, there are parts of the Canal Walk that seem okay for you to get through, but there are some parts that are not very good for handicap conditions, you have to know which areas of the Canal Walk work best for you. All in all this is a very nice way to spend the day when the weather is nice out and just enjoy the Canal area.

Yes, it is dog friendly. We saw many during our walk, most on leashes. I think that leashes are required but I can't recall seeing any signs stating that.

You can find both paid parking (at the muesum) and free parking spaces when you pass that paid parking. The free parking is under the railroad area especially if you get there early in the morning.

I parked in a free parking lot near the Virginia War Memorial and Gambles Hill Park, located between Browns Island Way and Tregedar Street, near the James River. We followed brown directional signs for "Canal Walk Parking" off the US301 highway and the bridge.

I saw many dogs being walked along the canal while we were there. I would send you a link but the guidelines say they are not allowed so I will quote a paragraph from the site:
"Central to just about everything for local residents as well as visitors, the River District has an eclectic combination of fare, fun, food, and shops with a great 1 mile walk along the river against a beautiful city backdrop. Dogs are welcome throughout the district and on the canal walk. Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after at all times. Dogs are not allowed at large events in the plaza area, but they are allowed on the canal trail any time."
