You can't spend time in Richmond without being near it, on it, or in it. Park near Tredegar, cross the bridge to Belle Isle, and watch kayaks and rafts passing by. Go back west to Pony Pasture where the river starts to transition from wide and slow to rocks and rapids, or travel south and east to Hopewell or Jamestown... More

Belle Isle is probably the most popular James River destination in Richmond because it is easy to get to since there is a pedestrian bridge that takes you right over. Once on Belle Isle, the atmosphere changes (in a good way) because you see so many different types of people and that is what makes it so truly special. People... More

I fish on the James frequently. I love it! There is so much variety in structure and fish species. Wouldn't recommend eating too many of the fish you catch.

We were looking for some relief from the 90 plus degree August heat so we went over the pedestrian bridge to Belle Island to find a spot to swim. However, the water was so warm, and the river so shallow in most spots, there was not really a place to cool off. It was fun, but not very refreshing.

At the west end of the Canal Walk is the US-1 bridge over the James River. The bridge itself is interesting but the "cat walk" below it is very neat. It is a well used walking bridge to Belle Island. It is not for the squeamish though. You can hear the traffic rumble above you and the bridge can shake... More

Mid-Way across the James River the suspension bridge swayed and my stomach flip flopped, I considered turning back but I was half-way across. Emerging at Belle Isle, the former prisoner of war camp during the Civil war, was a contrast in terrain from the sleek bridge. Historically if it hadn't been for the signs it would seem like a place... More

I stumbled across the covered trail along the Old St. James, this is so convenient! (partly because it started to rain as I was out walking. I heard a bit of live music, and saw some beautiful sights!

As many reviewers have noted, this is a nice place to relax, enjoy a picnic and usually a great breeze. It was very hot when we were there and we took a blanket and sat by the water and had a little nap. You are not supposed to swim but people do. You can see some neat birds on occasion.

This is by far the best place to visit in Richmond. There are a ton of places to hang out along the river. If you want to get to the REALLY nice spots, follow the locals. It takes a little maneuvering, but there are small trails that you can find that lead you to the weekend group of people that... More

There is a fantastic long pedestrian bridge across the James River with a spectacular view of this great river. All this is right in the middle of Richmond. There is parking in various places though on some days I suspect it is crowded. The river itself very picturesque with rapids and huge boulders in the middle. There is a wonderful... More
