The grounds are dilapidated and the walk across the bridge form the city is dangerous as bikers zip across it and dogs are on long leashes. There is little to do or see on Belle Isle.

Easily accessed on foot or bicycle from parking on Richmond side of James River. Eye opening crossing by a cable hung suspension bridge under a freeway over the river rapids. On our visit the river was a flood stage and the rapids bold. Belle Island...More

I have always loved Belle Isle, as I used to go there when I was in college a decade ago. We recently moved back to Richmond and have been showing our children the local sites. When visiting Belle Isle, make sure you wear good walking...More

It is a very beautiful city park where the outdoors can be enjoyed with a view of the Richmond skyline, Belle Isle is dotted with the remnants of hundreds of years of history. Scattered throughout the island are historic ruins from many eras of the...More

As mentioned re riverside walk, the island is reached by a pedestrian bridge. Seemed to be used by joggers and dog walkers. The area is not cultivated in any way nor really left to wildlife. Much of nothing in our view.

I recommend taking your kids to the mountain bike skills course to introduce them to mountain biking. Way fun. They have different levels of obstacles to build skills on. It's a fun adventure. There are mountain bike trails and hiking trails and a nice loop...More

JBR - September 13th to 17th (3 Replies)
We arrived from New York via train into Washington DC then hire car to Richmond. This was the exciting leg of our trip and I couldn't wait to hit Richmond. After a few technical difficulties with the silly navigation system and getting lost for a little bit, we finally made it into Richmond late afternoon. The exciting part for us was we were finally getting to see our daughter who is studying at VCU. After lots of cuddles all around we had dinner at a little restaurant not far away. I'm...More

Not sure what JBR means - but it looks like you had a really good visit! Was the BBQ joint Buz and Ned's? I must try it sometime! Thanks for sharing!

Detroit Grand Prix (1 Replies)
Good evening, I am interested to visit the indycar Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle. Also, I would like to stay in the Renaissance Center and explore the river walk area, the beautiful art deco buildings, and the streets on which F1 Grand Prix used to take place. What is the best way to get from the RenCen to Belle Isle? And are said areas OK safety-wise in this period? (apologies for the stereotypical question)

From Riverwalk to Belle Isle (6 Replies)
can you go in public transport? taxi? ferry? how much is it cost and how long it takes to get there? is it a good place to take pictures of the Detroit skyline? thank you!

"It would offer the best view of the downtown skyline without having to enter Canada." This is true, and you will get some interesting angles, but if you are interested in taking photos of the Detroit skyline, you still might want to take the Tunnel Bus across the border to Windsor, Ontario and walk a few blocks to the waterfront area. As tev9999 indicates, the best views are from the Canadian side of the Detroit River.
