A great place for family fun, Civil War history and nature lovers alike. Kids and families will not be bored in this fun environment!

The walk across the suspension bridge can feel like a walk through time. The river has so many ruins of old bridges and buildings that you can see from the bridge. As you cross you can see great views of the city, train trestles the Gambles Hill Park, the iron works and the Hollywood Cemetery. And the river is beautiful in its own right.

Once on the island there are trails that wind up and down the hill and access to the rocks in the river. There are ruins of old industrial buildings and even civil war buildings. You can learn the history of the Island through the many signs and items along the trail.

There is parking on the south and north side of the river. The North side is more challenging for parking but there are more options for activities beyond the Island.

The park itself is rather confusing to navigate as there is one trail map and then very little signage. All the remnants of buildings on the island are extremely old and weathered, so not really much to look at. Seems like a beautiful place to hike/walk if you are local though.

We took a morning during our Richmond visit to tour Belle Isle and found the historical site to have breathtaking views of the river and found it to be an easy hike.

It was our first time visiting Richmond, VA and Belle Isle was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Since the James River is such a focal point of Richmond -- being on an island in the James river was pretty cool. And if you enjoy scrambling over rock and rapids, the outcroppings and boulders lets you practically walk across the river. Beautiful view of the river banks and the city.

To gain access to the island you take a pedestrian bridge that literally hangs underneath the highway above. Brilliant design and engineering - never seen anything like that.

We parked on the Richmond side of the James River which was flowing at full peak and walked across the suspension bridge under the Belvidere Bridge. There is a small parking area but it fills up quickly. It is a great place for a walk, hike or bike ride. We saw people walking dogs. We were with family who come here often and said they walk out on the rocks in the summer when the river is lower and swim or float along without danger. Today we saw kayakers practicing going through some rapids. It is a peaceful place that was an enjoyable hour of walking the loop trail. It would be nice if there was more information posted about the history along the trail. There was a posting about prisoners being held here during the Civil War.

For those who are looking for a place to just relax and have a picnic, this is the spot. The water by the bridge is very soothing & the historical figures were very interesting. Also, would recommend this place for hikers or a nice jog.

For those looking for green respite from the city, Belle Island fits the bill. The views of the river rapids from the island are quite nice and you can get a good walk in if that's your aim.

The footbridge to access the island from the north side is interesting but narrow and visitors - mostly kids and young people this afternoon - appear to have no concept of social distancing as they walk three across so that you have to brush past them as you walk in the opposite direction.

Although the island is supposed to be a historical site, what little is there is dilapidated and the signage, where it exists is so old as to be difficult to read.

Love Belle Isle for a run, ride or hike. Great views of the City and River and aproxx. 5k hike if you do the loop and leave from Brown's Island side. Just take your trash home with you, an occasional item to pickup and leave it better than when we arrived.

This was a really cool experience! The suspension walkway under the road bridge is so unique! The views of the river are awesome! On the other side I walked the loop around the Isle - it was nice, mostly shaded and there were some historical relics along the way.

Went to Belle Isle for photography and was not disappointed! The river was high that day and got great pictures of rapids. The trail was very well kept; however, the area where you come off the foot bridge was surprisingly unkempt. This is a historical site that should be much better maintained than it is. I understand funding is probably not available and volunteers are spread thin, but this could be a real jewel for the area!!!
