Our small family group of 5 (with 2 kids, ages 8 and 11) took the Old Cambridge tour yesterday morning. We started early--10am on Sunday, so the Square wasn't too crowded. Our guide, Stewart, arrived promptly, dressed in period Victorian garb, and gave us a lively, informative and often humorous account of the history of Cambridge from its founding in 1630, through the Revolution and up to the late 1880s. (An added bonus were some fascinating tales about the lives of the Reys, authors of Curious George.) We ambled through Harvard Square, down Brattle Street, up Garden Street past Christ Church and the Old Burial Ground, stopping frequently so Stewart could regale us with wonderful tales of those who lived, died, fought, wrote, or were buried in these historic spots. He was an animated raconteur who kept all of us engaged (even our kids). Most of us on the tour had grown up in Cambridge or had lived there 50+ years, and yet there was still plenty to learn! A great experience and I highly recommend asking for Stewart if you're considering the Old Cambridge tour. You won't be disappointed.
