About
Just steps away from Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Harvard Art Museums welcome visitors from around the corner and around the world. Visitors can enjoy the many amenities that greet them upon entering the museums’ expansive and beautifully restored Calderwood Courtyard on the first floor—our own version of a town square. From there, grab a coffee or snack in Jenny’s Cafe or browse the many unique gifts in the museum shop before exploring over 50 galleries of art across three floors. In addition to the galleries, visitors can view works of art not currently on display by appointment in the expansive Art Study Center. Conveniently browse the collections and make an appointment through our website. Many engaging public programs take place throughout the year, from gallery tours to artist talks to workshops in our Materials Lab, a hands-on environment for art making. The museums are open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10am to 5pm, and are free to all visitors every day.

- RoaryVancouver, Canada3,677 contributionsFree entry!A group of us were visiting the Harvard area when we came across the Fogg Art Museum. We had overhead that there was no entrance fee, so we figured it was worth stopping in and see. It turned out to be a 2.5+ hour visit. The wide collection of art was impressive, as is the building itself. There was even a musical performance on the main floor during the time we were there. Considering there was no cost to visit, this stop was a really pleasant surprise and worth visiting.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 15, 2023
- NYC Explorer123 contributionsAn impressive collection beautifully displayed and FREE to see!!!Overall a great museum with a smaller collection on display than other art museums but the art is outstanding and beautifully displayed. I rate this museum much higher than the Boston Museum of Art as the layout, the curatorial display, lighting and quality of artwork represented surpasses in the overall visitor experience. It has a very large and one of the most impressive floral still life’s by Renoir, great examples of modern art of the 20th century, a very impressive collection of ancient Japanese wall hanging paintings, ancient Chinese art ceramics and bronzes, and prime examples of 19th and early 20th century period western art including Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Hopper, Pollock etc, and the admission is free! There is museum garage parking across the street but you must buy a ticket online before your trip to get in the garage. Directions are on the museum website and very tedious and not easy to do but after many steps you can access reservation to park but you must print out ticket to show the garage attendant and then place in vehicle dashboard. Around $32 to park. Expensive but very convenient as museum is across the street. To print out use Waze app or google map search a nearby FedEx Office to print out the QR code sent to your email upon purchase of garage reservation. Or try to use public transportation to get there. Not a convenient place to find parking otherwise.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 23, 2024
- kleicSan Antonio, Texas1,085 contributionsWhat a pleasure!I had a day to kill in Cambridge recently and so headed off to see what I could find at this museum (it's actually one museum combining three collections). I didn't really know what I was in for; let's just say I will never visit Cambridge again without stopping by! From the enthusiastic and knowledgable young man at the front desk who suggested I start with the "light box" all the way at the top and explained the museum's history to me to the incredibly thoughtful labels throughout the museum, I was really blown away. And the collection: a little bit of so many things! I particularly enjoyed the current special exhibit "Carving Out Time" by LaToya Hobbs and the breath-takingly beautiful Asian gallery in the corner on the first floor that's just flooded with light. Whether you have half an hour or three hours, add this place to your "must stop" list. Oh, and it's free!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 27, 2024
- margatemensch2016Coconut Creek, Florida812 contributionsMedieval Italian Paintings Worthy of Praise At the Fogg Art MuseumA few days ago,I returned to the Fogg Art Museum and I especially enjoyed its fine collection of Italian Medieval Paintings.I saw wonderful devotional theme Medieval Period Paintings by Master of Camerino(13th Century),Bernardo Daddi,Luca Dii Tomme(Processional Cross),Master of Offida,Master of Saint Cosmas and Damian(13th Century),Simone Martini,Ambrogio Lorenzetti,Taddeo Gaddi("Stigmatization of Saint Francis"),Taddeo di Bartolo,Roberto Oderisi("Christ with Instruments of Passion")Pietro Lorenzetti, and the Master of the Fogg Pieta. I also went to the Art Study Center of the Fogg Art Museum in East Somerville to study more awesome Italian Medieval Period Paintings.Reservations are required at this off campus site in East Somerville two weeks in advance.I saw superb Italian Medieval Period Paintings by Bartolomeo Bulgarini,Spinello Aretino,Simone Crocefissi,Deodato Orlandi(13th Century),and Pacino di Bonaguida at the East Somerville facility. The Fogg Art Museum is very multifarious.I also appreciated the fine Medieval Period Sculpture produced in France and Italy,as well their collection of religious artifacts.Admission is free, but donations from the public will help this art museum maintain its high standards.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 18, 2024
- Rob Caputo48 contributionsWhat a breathtaking Museum! This visit was delightfully unexpected. We came to Cambridge to experience Harvard Square and were all completely aw struck by this top notch Art Museum on the Harvard Campus!! Tons of actual artwork from all the famous painters like Picasso, Monet, etc. Sculptures from Egypt and Rome and much more !! I was not allowed to take gimbal video but I will share some photos. Truly amazing and highly recommended. We spend well over 2 hours there and only viewed half the museum. Definitely coming back!!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 31, 2024

The art is beautiful and well worth a visit. However, my visit was somewhat marred by the "elderly black lady", yes her again, previously mentioned in another review. I was taking a photo of a painting and she told me to stand at least a foot away. I was a bit taken aback, as I was standing a good 3 feet away, at least. Later on, she reappeared and told me from across the room to put my shoulder bag at my side, It was across my body, towards my back. I looked at her with amazement, as there were at least 4 people in the room with large rucksacks! I felt like I was being told off like a badly behaved child, not a woman of 60 years of age! I have to say, she spoiled what should have been an enjoyable visit. A few days later, we visited the Museum of Fine Arts. What a difference. Smiling. helpful staff. Harvard Art Museum, please take note.

The museums are quite nice, and I needed a full three hours to make my way through and read many of the object labels. I don't think the young woman behind the counter could have been much pricklier if she'd tried. She provided next to no info, seemed disgusted that I dared to ask a few questions, and later told me after I'd read about public tours (not presented to me as an option) that the first tour had filled up. The other young woman I saw checking people in also seemed far too proud to be a Harvard student or Cambridge/Boston resident, and she was too grumpy to be in her role. One nice space was the café, as the employees there were more than cordial.

I was so impressed by the great portraits and sculptures by so many great artists. It was very comfortable to move about the building and linger if I chose. No one minded if I took pictures. It was great, and it was free with my Mass Teacher's Association card. I would give it five stars, and probably shoud, but I like to leave room for improvement.

We spent 4 hours at the Fogg Art Museum on the Harvard Campus and were very impressed with the galleries and holdings. Reservations are necessary; we made ours standing at the museum check-in desk. The Fogg holdings also included those from the Sackler and Busch-Reisinger, so it was not necessary to walk to other nearby buildings. Only disappointment was that the cafe was not open, so plan your refreshments in advance. Overall, our experience was very enjoyable.

What an amazing museum. We visited to see the exhibit, “De los Andes Al Caribe. From the moment I saw they were going to have this exhibit, I knew I wanted to go. The artwork was phenomenal. Most of the works had a religious theme to it but it was truly amazing. The paintings and colors were remarkable. In addition to these works of art they also had plenty of other works from other great civilizations; Greek, Roman, Middle Eastern and Southwest Asia among others as well.
Three museum has 3 floors of displays and it is packed with the works of some of the greatest artists. You should visit this museum whenever you get the chance, but if you happen to be in town on a Sunday, then definitely go on a Sunday because admission is free.

Museum staff/security followed my 10 year old around as if she was going to vandalize a piece of artwork. The psychotic Asian guard was the absolute worst. She berated my child who wasn’t even anywhere near the painting or the wall. She followed us around. It was so uncomfortable. We will never go there again. If they do not want children in the museum then they should make it clear “No children allowed”. Our daughter felt so bad after. She has been to the MFA several times and never had this type of experience. Pretentious staff that needs to get over themselves. Don’t waste your time at the Harvard Art Museum.

We decided to try this museum when we had some time to kill while in Cambridge. It has an excellent collection of famous artists’ paintings. I particularly relished the 19th and 20th century paintings. Best part was very helpful, descriptive explanations of each piece. I highly recommend going if you appreciate painting (or sculptures). I enjoyed the cafe too.

The visit would have been even better if rooms 1220 (Wertheim Gallery, which holds the Van Gogh self-portrait) and 1300-1330 had not been closed for an unspecified reason, but the visit was very rewarding all the same. We particularly liked the rooms devoted to German expressionist art, but there are lots of other treasures. It helps to have wealthy alumni!
