The gardens are amazing. Huge stretches of green lawn with towering trees, flower beds with roses and a variety of flowers, beautiful fountains set in precisely manicured Versaille-like gardens, and grottos and pillared structures adding to the interest. Photo-ops everywhere, but alas, we were confined to an open-sided tour wagon...and it was raining! We finally managed to get the driver to roll up the plastic sides, so at least we had a clearer view. By the time we stopped at the farm and were able to get out of the vehicle, it had stopped raining, so we were able to walk around a little, take a few pictures unencumbered, and taste the yogurt made there. We completed the tour basically without rain, managing to get some decent pictures despite the restriction of not being able to get out of the vehicle. Loved the gardens…the tour wagon not so much!

There are two ways to visit them:
- guided tour by minibus lasting approximately 50 minutes
- visit on foot (accompanied by an electric vehicle up to a certain point) with duration as desired
In the first case you can visit a much larger area while in the second case the visitable area is smaller and you are constantly monitored to avoid any "trespassing" as already said by other visitors.
The gardens are very beautiful and well cared for. They are definitely worth a visit.

I had originally booked the walking tour, but realised that I would not be able to make it to Anagni in time afterwards. Thus I asked if I could switch to the train tour. I was very happy that this was possible. The tour was nice with a decent audio commentary, we passed the vast space and also the old remains of the former Roman Imperial villa. In fact I appreciated Villa Barberini more than the Pontifical Palace.

Visit carried out comfortably sitting on an eco-friendly minibus with audio guide. Well-kept park, with some fountains, many remains of Roman ruins, many plants always green. An hour well spent in this oasis of peace.

Excellent visit. We took advantage of the minibus which gives us the opportunity to go around the park but sitting down. Very convenient and complete option thanks to the explanations provided by the audio guide delivered at the entrance. The gardens are spectacular, with attention to every detail. All the staff are very friendly and helpful which made the tour even better. I advise

You can have a recommendable guided tour on a minibus in these beautiful gardens, either purchasing the ticket in advance on the Vatican Museums Online Ticket Office or directly at the cashiers inside the Pontifical Residence Apostolic Palace, the summer residence of many Popes (Francesco is not spending time here, therefore the Palace is now visitable with a separate ticket, this visit is also worth to do)

We normally book the walking tour which takes 2 hours, but for some reason it was not available this October as it was every year before. As we knew the eco bus tour would take us to the papal farms we were excited about this alternative to visit the gardens. Little did we know. We had booked the 11 am tour which started 5 mins late. Throughout it was rushed, so that the audio sections were not even finished when the next audio section number was called. It was difficult to take decent pictures. We had to get up from our seats constantly and lean over other people. The bus stopped at very few places long enough to take decent photographs. Although the tour was signposted as 60 mins it was 45 mins in total. Not OK. It did not do the beautiful gardens with their interesting and diverse history any justice at all. We felt ripped off and left the tour stressed.

Visited the garden of the Pope's Summer Palace at Castel Gandolfo with a group of gardeners. Some 150 acres situated on hillside with stunning views to Rome. A huge amount of clipped shrubs and low box hedges in the Italian garden style (gardeners must be praying for the box blight or box moth caterpillar) on terraces, but also some interesting plants. Some nice Banksian roses (and double white as well as the usual yellow) climbing up trees and walls. The gardens are on the historic site of Emperor Domitian's palace with ruins going back to the 1st century AD, including a Roman theatre. Sadly, not possible to enter the Emperor's magnificent audience hall remains (damaged by recent earthquakes and surveys, etc. still needed). Lots of steps! Castel Gandolfo is easily reached by train from Termini, Rome, but you will have the climb up from the station to the town centre (attractive and well worth visiting anyway; taxi was available at station when I went).

Unfortunately the view out of the small bus was appalling. The plastic windows were scratched and the frame of the window blocked views from the isle seat. The clarity was obscured with the sun and the grandeur of the gardens was not in existence. The only person with a view was the driver. We had a better view from the external wall of the garden.
We would not recommend wasting your time or money. The tour company / bus drivers need to reasssess how one can spend sometime reflecting and appreciating the hedged roads, the Popes crests and the architectural landscaping of the garden. We did not see or experience this.
A walk around Lago Albano is free and can allow one to experience the beauty of the surrounds and local plant species.

Buongiorno! Secondo voi è necessario prenotare per visitare i giardini o si può andare liberamente anche ad agosto? Pensavo al biglietto col bus visto il caldo attuale. Grazie

Hi!
How long does it take to walk from the Apostolic palace to the Barberini gardens?
Can we park at the Apostolic palace?
Written September 17, 2017
The gardens are just about 200m from the palace outside the town walls. They are very large but as we had booked an inclusive deal we got driven around the gardens in open sided mini buses.
There is parking outside the town walls but not a lot as it is a one way system and the buses have to turn around just outside the main gate.
Personally its easier to go with the tour we used the Vatican website and went with them direct.

Not sure - hard to tell from their website
We went on on our own taking a train from Termini Station at around 12:00 - arriving at 13:00 then walked up the hill and bought a ticket at the gate - it's simple enough to be honest.......................

Do we need to book a tour to see the gardens? If so, do we need to do this before leaving Rome or can we do it when we get there. We will be visiting on a weekend in April. Are the gardens open Saturday and Sunday?
Written April 4, 2016
Yes. You have to pre-arrange a tour through the Vatican Museums:
Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo: Barberini Garden (duration of the tour is 1 hour 30 minutes)
With the exceptional opening of the Barberini Garden, the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo welcome the public at large. Accompanied in a multi-lingual guided tour, visitors will have access to the botanical and architectural wonders of the pontifical residence, known by now as the "second Vatican".
Type of visit: group or individual with compulsory guide.
Visiting days: from Monday to Saturday.
Languages available: Italian; English.
By special request: French, Spanish and German tours.musei@scv.va
N.B.: The garden is not currently accessible to wheelchair users or persons with reduced mobility.
Tariffs
"Barberini Garden"
€ 450,00 fixed price (for groups of up to 15 persons)
€ 650,00 fixed price (for groups of up to 25 persons)
"Barberini Garden"
€ 26,00 fixed price (per person in groups of up to 25 persons)
I can't post the link to purchase tickets online, but you can google Vatican Museums and look for tours.
