We spent about an hour in this museum and would have spent more but were trying to get over to the Opera House and hosiery museum too. Did not allow enough time for all three spots. We found Ft. Payne's boom town history to be very interesting and learned a lot about the sad story of the Cherokees and the Trail of Tears.

Fort Payne has a fascinating history and this beautiful train station / museum is part of it and part of the education about it. The station museum, the annex across the street, and the old theater all will make you want to learn more about this place. The museum has a collection of incredible western US Native American artifacts put together by a local resident. The annex explains the industry of Fort Payne and has some of the most interesting Rube Goldberg-appearing machines you will ever see (you'll have to see for yourself, I'm not telling). Another fascinating display is of historical model dioramas that are just great - all constructed by the same craftsman. The old Opera House is a fine example of the entertainment venues of the 19th century. Go to Fort Payne

We went to this small museum just to see a piece of history. The gentleman greeted us at the door and gave us a brief and well described history of Fort Payne and the exhibits. It is very well laid out with very many artifacts and history of Fort Payne. They also have an annex across the street loaded with more items. A great way to spend an hour learning about Fort Payne and the outside of the building is beautiful.

The depot museum was nice but the annex with the dioramas was fascinating. We enjoyed our visit and learned a lot about Fort Payne.
