- GRZChicago, Illinois13,131 contributionsThis waterfall is always amazing - I know lots of them are, but the power here, the drop, the vertical wall, the little river both on the upper level and lower level, the fact there are stairs/ramp to go up... the free parking lot, and did I mention big chance to see a rainbow? It's a popular and busy place but somehow it never feels overcrowded I would recommend not making this your first stop of the morning as portion of it will be in a shade, give it some light so the rainbows and colors can show up better - so plan your itinerary accordingly. TIP: Restrooms are available here but for a fee - some restaurants in the area too, didn't try any so can't speak of the qualityVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 1, 2024
- Tom&NikkiTravelLondon, United Kingdom1,901 contributionsIt is hard not to see and instantly love Skógafoss waterfall - that's why we've been back there 4 times since our initial visit! Whether you are visiting in the colder months when the waterfall looks like something out of a winter wonderland or in the summer when you can really appreciate the contrast of the fast flowing water over the 60m drop against the lush green cliffs and the volcanic black sand it never fails to impress. On our most recent trip we visited the waterfall twice, once at the end of our first day as we wanted to visit Mia's country van for some incredible fish and chips and sat watching the water cascade whilst eating our dinner. The second visit was the following morning at sunrise when we could stand in front of the falls with no other visitors around in a moment of pure peace and just be in the moment enjoying the mist from the falls gently covering us. You can if you feel upto it walk up the metal staircase to the right of the falls to get to the viewing platform at the top - to be perfectly honest I wouldn't recommend it as its a long way up and the view wasn't all that great - just watching a river run over the edge. If however you plan to walk up river to the other waterfalls then that's a different story! I would just say if you do plan to go up the stairs, they do move a little - something that may be a little disconcerting to those uncertain of heights as it can also get windy! Its hard to really hard to put into words the feeling of utter bewilderment you get when standing toe to toe with Skógafoss but its something you have to experience to really understand.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2024
- Scotty102Innerleithen, United Kingdom703 contributionsYet another stunning waterfall along the South Coast road to Vik. I don’t think you can get as close to the falls in winter as you can in summer, meaning that at the very front of the area you can go, you only get around a ¾ view of the falls with the right hand side being obscured a bit by the hill. However there was another path near the car park which few people even noticed, which lead down to the waters edge and from here you can get a near 100% un-obstructed view of the entire falls. Once again I dread to think how busy this gets in the summer months as it was pretty busy in mid-December. Access to the site is free, also parking is free but it is on a very rough unpaved surface, didn’t use the toilets so don’t know if they were free or not.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2024
- EdK59Sevenoaks, United Kingdom1,063 contributionsSpectacular from the bottom and the top - be careful of going too close to the bottom of the falls as frozen blocks of ice or rocks are spilled over the top from time to time. Don't get too close and especially your children who may be drawn to the side which is very slippery. Climb the 500 odd stairs to the top for a spectacular view of the waterfall and the land beyond. The stairs can be daunting for the unfit, so take your time and again, keep your children close to you. Enjoy!Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 28, 2024
- Barbara BRome, Italy223 contributionsThe perfect waterfall. The waterfall is a masterpiece of nature. The place is touristy so you can not breathe wild air as I like, but still you feel that there is something in the magical place. It will be the perfection of the waterfall, with its measures and the flow of the water... or the incredibly black sand and the jet that if you get closer crosses the body with a rushing gust. It was a surprise because anyway it gave me beautiful feelings that I did not expect, but above all climb up (crowded right path, uphill with steps, but easy) and discover (I did not know) that there is another small enchanted world, the river that snakes, another waterfall and the path that continues further up. For reasons of time we did not continue but it was definitely worth it!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 18, 2024
- giannicaracciSicily, Italy821 contributionsReally very beautiful, in fine weather you can see the rainbow next to the fall of the waterfall. Feelings alive in the face of the power of nature. - AustintoBostonBoston, Massachusetts436 contributionsWe ended up stopping here on the way back to Reykjavik on our route along the South Coast. It was early evening, and we were wiped from all the driving, so I have to be honest in saying that I think I would have appreciated this site more had I seen it earlier in the day. That being said, it was pretty empty when we went, so we got to walk up close without fighting for a spot. We didn't do the climb to the top, but it looked easy seeing a staircase had been builtVisited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 1, 2024
- maaparMount Pleasant, South Carolina964 contributionsStunning waterfall that you climb over 500 steps to see. You need your waterproof gear because there is a lot of spray. Can also see birds nesting in the cliffs this time of year. Lots of tourists but not overly crowded Can also have lunch at restaurant by falls.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 25, 2024
- Stefano RArezzo, Italy47 contributionsIf I had to draw up a ranking of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, this would fall into the top places. Despite its power it is possible to get right to the foot of the water jet, a unique experience. I would recommend waterproof clothing, especially if you want to visit up close.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 30, 2024
- ManuCdelaEPasto, Colombia100 contributionsIt is certainly one of the most impressive waterfalls you can find. With a height of approximately 60 meters, it is surrounded by a black sand beach that adorns the banks of the river. In addition, you have the opportunity to climb up some steps that take you up to the level of the waterfall, where you can see the river in all its glory. The view is truly spectacular, and if the sun shines brightly, you’ll be lucky enough to watch a beautiful rainbow form in the falling water.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 27, 2024

Skógafoss is one of the most famous and largest waterfalls on the South Coast. You can walk right up to the waterfall, following a flat trail, but I would definitely recommend some waterproof clothing like a jacket as the sprayage is quite strong. Because of the thick mist of water, rainbows are abundantly produced on sunny days. During my visit, we got to see a double rainbow at the base of the falls.
If you are feeling a challenge, there is a very long staircase you can climb to see the views from atop. The staircase is quite narrow and can accommodate a single file of people going up and another file of people going down the stairs. There is also a hand rail on one side of the stairs, so I would advise going down very carefully as the descent is pretty steep.
The parking lot is fairly large and free, though some of the toilets are not. There is also a campsite nearby too.

Skógafoss Waterfall is one of the largest and most thrilling waterfalls in Iceland, known for its folklore full of mysterious sagas and treasures hidden by the Vikings. Located on the Skógá River in southern Iceland, it is part of the popular route known as the "Golden Circle". Thanks to its impressive dimensions, 60 meters wide and 25 meters high, Skógafoss makes an incredible impression and also provides the opportunity to see a rainbow against the background of the waterfall on sunny days. This classic, simple waterfall is also a popular place for bird watching, especially for black-backed gulls and sparrowhawks.

My husband and I visited Skogafoss as we made our way along the southern coast. The waterfall is so powerful and beautiful, and you're able to get right up to it from underneath and can walk up to see the top as well. The parking lot is only a short walk away. Make sure to bring waterproof clothes, as you get very wet if you walk close on the bottom. It can get pretty busy so early morning is a good time to visit if you want fewer people around.

Skogafoss is awesome…if I stopped writing there those 3 words could be enough to summarise it, but I’ll continue.
I’ve visited the Skogafoss waterfall in the winter, frozen, icy and cold. This summer was my first time visiting with all of the greenery and it is like a different place.
Walking upto the waterfall you are going to get wet, the drop of the waterfall along with the power causes a lot of spray. Be sure to wear something waterproof or resistant at least. You can walk something around the side of the falls on the rocks but it can be slippy and a little uneven, so unless you are in good boots and are sure of your footing I’d keep to the front of the falls.
It is often busy unless you visit first thing in the morning or later in the evening. That being said people spend their few mins, get their photos and move on - the challenge is there is a lot of people so timing is everything!
There is a hike up to the top of the falls, around 500steps. The steps are metal at parts and a little “wobbly” as they are linked platforms. This can be a little unnerving if you are unsure of heights but it is safe. The view from the top is nice but is clearly second best to the floor view. Unless you are wanting to walk off some fish and chips I’d personally leave the steps and do not run up them like I did…hello 190bpm heart rate!
This is a waterfall I would return to time and time again on visits. I’ve seen many people camp there on my recent visit and that has to be my next trip. The falls have some amazing legends that come with them also, something to learn about on your trip ;)

We had a busy day dropping into lots of sights at Vik, black sand beach and Seljalandsfoss too so got there at 6pm as light was going. So not as busy with buses of tourists thankfully !
Nice steep climb on steps to side of the falls then a walking path on top across plateau following the natural stream. At base of falls as water pounds down the full force can be experienced. It’s cold and icey and the ground around quite treacherous so crampons at this time of year a good thing.

Great power! Parking and restaurant near the waterfall. It can be visited either from below or by taking a staircase and then a path from above. For those who want to go near the water, I recommend waterproof clothing (jacket, trousers and shoes). Otherwise you can admire it even from afar without getting wet. For those who have more time, the high trek can also be very long (see on the official website).

Skogafoss is another amazing waterfall that can be found on most tours visiting the South Coast of Iceland. It can easily be reached from the Ring Road. There are many tourists that visit during the summer however, it wasn’t overly crowded. This waterfall generates a large amount of spray so it is quite fascinating to see how quickly rainbows are visible. I saw numerous rainbows during my short visit. Also, due to the flat terrain you can walk directly up to the waterfall but be prepared to be sprayed. That might sound fun however, even in the month of July the temperature was approximately 57 to 60 degrees so getting wet is not ideal. You can also view the waterfall from the top if you are willing to climb the steep staircase. I decided that viewing from ground level was perfect for me. No matter how you decide to see Skogafoss just remember it should be a part of your to do list while vacationing in Iceland.

It is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls.
If you are lucky enough to visit it on a sunny day you will have confirmation.
It is called "Bride Veil" because the amplitude of the waterfall calls to mind.
You can walk almost under the waterfall and if there is no wind it offers spectacular views.
There is a path set up with metal stairs that allows you to climb even to the point of water drop and that allows a breathtaking view of the surrounding plain.
Currently parking is free, but during our visit we noticed works for the realization of an official parking and imagine that after is instructed the usual payment with registration of car plates.

This waterfall is right off of Ring Road and it's a super short walk to get to the falls. And despite the crowds, there's enough space to spread out and get photos without other people in them. It really is an iconic waterfall and the whole surrounding area is absolutely stunning. Cannot be missed if you're driving the Ring Road.

This is a popular, tall waterfall in a scenic location. It can get crowded when the buses roll in, so you might want to go early or in the evening to avoid the rush. There's a short walk from the parking lot, and you can even explore behind the falls.
Also, there is a path that leads up, up, up to the top of the hill (over 500 steps!) but it is worth the effort. From there, you can see the panoramic view of the falls, but also continue on to see other falls, gorges and rolling hills. Most people just check out the main falls and leave. If they do, they are missing spectacular scenery from above! If you've got the time and the stamina, take the hike up!

Hi, me and some friends wish to visit here on Friday as we have nothing planned for that afternoon. Due to our flight arrival, we will probably only arrive at the waterfall at 4:30/4:45. Can anyone advise would that be too late to see anything or would it still be worth visiting with limited daylight?

I booked ahead of time with Sixt. The car was good... but they did use a lot of upsell tactics. "Sandstorm damage" ... they said was highly recommended if traveling to the south. We encountered nothing but pleasant drizzle. Aside from that, the company was descent.

How long would you need to spend at the falls?
Written February 7, 2019
If it’s just at ground level 30 mins should be adequate. If you want to reach the upper levels allocate 1& 1/2 hours to 2 hours dependent on your exploring needs.

As above, I don't think you will have any issues visiting unless there is some really unfortunate weather.

Is it possible to park the car overnight (2 nights)? If yes, how much does it cost and how save is it? Thanks a lot!
Written May 6, 2018
Hello there. There is no overnight parking on Skogáfoss. There are signs everywhere that warn you parking after 7:00PM is prohibited. There are, however, a campsite and a hotel in the vicinity, just minutes away from the waterfall. The campsite is about 1500kr. and the hotel rates change depending on the season. Hope this information helps.

Is it there electricity? I need to charge my cameras and drones batteries, so I'm looking the best camping around this area to stay. Could you tell me if there is enough connections for it (does each spot has its connection?) Is this camping the best around for that?
Written January 21, 2018
Not sure if there is electricity availble to use - there is a modern cafe nearby and, within the camping ground a hut for facilities (showers and toilets) which may have shaver outlets. If you spoke to the folk in the cafe I'm sure you could come to some arrangement!
