- Reza SattarzadehMuscat, Oman2,221 contributionsIncredible WaterfallSkogafoss is certainly one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever visited. The flow of the water is absolutely strong and as you get closer to the waterfall, you shall certainly get wet. The location would require you either to have your own wheels or go on a tour. In either way, at least an hour is necessary to make the most of the waterfall and the whole experience. Make sure to take waterproof jacket if you plan to get close. There are stairs to the right side from which you can climb up to see the view from above.Visited July 2022Written December 22, 2022
- The Travel Couple - Chathu & IshankaKalutara, Sri Lanka991 contributionsBeautiful wide waterfall close to ring roadA beautiful gigantic waterfall located just by the ring road. One of the widest Waterfalls in Iceland. You can go very close to the bottom of the waterfall. But you will get so wet by the splashing water when you go closer. There's a trail to go to the upper parts of the waterfall and see if from the top. It's bit steep and might take a lot of effort to reach the top.Visited October 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2022
- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom5,802 contributionsImpressive waterfallImpressive waterfall. You're able to get quite near to it but you do get wet! The sun was shining on it when we were there producing a rainbow just in front of the falls. There are steps up to a view from the top but I didn't take them. There was lots of water falling over when we were there as it had rained most of the previous day. Our guide said that they are sometimes frozen.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 30, 2023
- Grace HCounty Mayo, Ireland277 contributionsGorgeousMade a stop year as we journeyed along the South Coast. Really cool waterfall with huge volumes of water given the rain made that day. - ShigammLondon, United Kingdom1,172 contributionsBreath taking views from the top.If you are able you can get great view from the top of the waterfall. Please aware it is around 460 odd steps from bottom to top, they have got handrails to help you with the climb as well. The waterfall is amazing from both top and bottom, to be fair you get to see more from the bottom.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 17, 2023
- SWH100Cardiff, United Kingdom1,079 contributionsDon’t forget your waterproofsThe Skógafoss waterfall is epic. It was our last stop on our South Coast tour. It was relatively quiet when we arrived so we were able to walk right up to the waterfall. As we approached we got drenched though. If you want to get close for a good picture, you are just going to have to accept you are going to get very wet. Was very glad we had our waterproofs on. The sound and height of the waterfall is insane. It’s so cool. Was very glad to see this. Just a shame the steps were shut in winter as I would have liked to walk to the top to see the waterfall from above. Excuse to return I guess.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 20, 2023
- dbinhou7511Houston, Texas1,563 contributionsPopular magnificent waterfall!Popular waterfall in southern Iceland. Truly magnificent waterfall. View from below or climb stairs to view the top. Many gulls nest in the cliffs. Beautiful rainbows visible due to the amount of water in the falls.Visited July 2022Written February 23, 2023
- Heli KLappeenranta, Finland1,526 contributionsSkogafoss - The rainbow and "Game of Thrones" waterfallOne of the must waterfalls to see in Iceland. And especially if you are a Game of Throne fan. Waterfall is very beautiful. And the rainbow you can see in the waterfall in sunny weather is amazing too. I also recommend to climb the 527 steps up - little bit exhausting but it is worth it. It is amazing to see the river and the waterfall itself from that perspective too. We had a private tour and visiting this place was part of our day. There was a big parking lot and also possibility to go to toilet.Visited March 2023Written March 9, 2023
- Prabir GKolkata (Calcutta), India2,719 contributionsSimply StunningA. Opening Hours : Owen always B. Entry Ticket: Free entry C. Location : 155 km from Reykjavik, about 2 hours drive. 10 minutes walk from the bus stop to the falls D. Travel mode : Part of Southern Iceland tour. The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country ( width of 82 feet and a drop 200 ft). A single or double rainbow is visible on sunny days. You can get drenched if they go too near the waterfall, again due to the spray. According to legend, the first Viking settler , Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. At the eastern side of the waterfall, hiking and trekking trail hoes up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. A 430-step staircase leads up the slope to the top of the waterfall. I visited this place on 20th Mar'23 as part of our Southern Iskand your. It was clear weather but very cold and icy wind blowing. The ground being icy, you need to be very careful to avoid slipping on the ice. We couldn't climb up the view point, tge steps were covered with ice and being very slippery. The view of the fall was majestic. With icecles all around it was a treat to the eyes. The cascades of the fall flows as Skoga river The river was almost frozen due to the cold weather. I could walk near the main cascade and got a majestic view. There is a small museum displaying local artifacts and traditions. There is a souvenir shop and a cafe as well. A must visit spit in Iceland.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 22, 2023
- rcote75Gulfport, Mississippi467 contributions100% with the time to visit!Very cool waterfall! Busy parking lot and many people but room to spread out. You can walk far and up the side of the waterfall if you want or stay nearer the parking lot/along the river so it is accessible to many people. The waterfall is beautiful. It’s been the backdrop of many shows/movies and you’ll see why!Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2023

This waterfall is exciting in that you walk up close and feel the mist and blowing water at you. The roar of the water also adds to the experience. We did see a rainbow the day we went since the sun was shining brightly. The experience was exhilarating!

This is probably the best of the waterfalls in Southern Iceland. This is a magnificent waterfall that you can walk up close to from the carpark. Close up you can feel the power and noise of the waterfall. Fot those with energy, you can climb up to higher viewing platforms. If you are planning to visit a south Iceland waterfall, it should be the 62 meter high Skogafoss waterfall.

This was our 2nd stop of Part 1 of the South Coast exploration. After leaving Seljalandfoss and Gljúfrabúi, you think you've seen enough waterfalls, and how different is this one going to be? Well, it's different! And not to be missed. What a sight! A short walk from the parking brings you at the foot of this majestic, awe inspiring waterfall.
There are steps (a little over 500 actually) that take you up tot he top, above the waterfall.
Definitely recommend stopping here on your visit to the South Coast! You may think that you don't need to stop at all the waterfalls, but this one is one you have to see. There may be less impressive waterfalls that will not be worth stopping at if you are short on time, but as you are putting together your itinerary, keep in mind Seljalandfoss and Gljúfrabúi, Skogafoss, Bruarfoss are not to be missed.

You can see this beauty from the road. However, once you walk up to it, you realize the power coming off of this magnificent waterfall. It was a sunny day when we visited, and there was a permanent rainbow in front of the waterfall. You need patience in order to get photos without other humans in front of the waterfall. There are stairs that will take you to the top of the waterfall if you're so inclined. This is a must-see for all who drive by, and seemed to be a stop on the bus tours as well.

Now this was a really spectacular waterfall compared to the likes of Seljandfoss. The even 62 metre drop is quite magnificent. The huge amount of spray it generates requires the time of great you see being blown in some of the pictures. It is also very easy to access from the Ring Road. I was quite annoyed when we were there at someone wearing a very bright jacket but when I look at the photos I took, the colour contrast actually helps with the perspective and shows the height of the falls.

Beautiful waterfall that you can see from the road. There are also several places to eat. I also noticed people camping. There is a museum right next to this and another waterfall so this is a stop that can take a long time if you endure all of it's surroundings. There are also restrooms.
Tip: I wouldn't waste your time climbing to the top unless you just have to. The beautiful view is from the ground.

When you patiently waits for the bus tours to go away, you can definitely have the waterfalls on your own. During winter, it can be freezing but the excitement of seeing the ice, the water, the double rainbow is priceless. Just be careful though, it can be quite slippery near the falls. So make sure you wear appropriate shoes if you dare near the falls. A must visit when you are in Iceland.

Spectacular! This beautiful waterfall is very tall and easy to walk to from the parking lot. Camping is available near the waterfall if you want to camp for the night.
We did not do the stairs to the top but greatly enjoyed the waterfall in the morning and then stopped by again in the lat day.
This water fall often gives some great rainbows in the sunshine

This waterfall is right off of Ring Road and it's a super short walk to get to the falls. And despite the crowds, there's enough space to spread out and get photos without other people in them. It really is an iconic waterfall and the whole surrounding area is absolutely stunning. Cannot be missed if you're driving the Ring Road.

Skogafoss is awesome…if I stopped writing there those 3 words could be enough to summarise it, but I’ll continue.
I’ve visited the Skogafoss waterfall in the winter, frozen, icy and cold. This summer was my first time visiting with all of the greenery and it is like a different place.
Walking upto the waterfall you are going to get wet, the drop of the waterfall along with the power causes a lot of spray. Be sure to wear something waterproof or resistant at least. You can walk something around the side of the falls on the rocks but it can be slippy and a little uneven, so unless you are in good boots and are sure of your footing I’d keep to the front of the falls.
It is often busy unless you visit first thing in the morning or later in the evening. That being said people spend their few mins, get their photos and move on - the challenge is there is a lot of people so timing is everything!
There is a hike up to the top of the falls, around 500steps. The steps are metal at parts and a little “wobbly” as they are linked platforms. This can be a little unnerving if you are unsure of heights but it is safe. The view from the top is nice but is clearly second best to the floor view. Unless you are wanting to walk off some fish and chips I’d personally leave the steps and do not run up them like I did…hello 190bpm heart rate!
This is a waterfall I would return to time and time again on visits. I’ve seen many people camp there on my recent visit and that has to be my next trip. The falls have some amazing legends that come with them also, something to learn about on your trip ;)

I booked ahead of time with Sixt. The car was good... but they did use a lot of upsell tactics. "Sandstorm damage" ... they said was highly recommended if traveling to the south. We encountered nothing but pleasant drizzle. Aside from that, the company was descent.

How long would you need to spend at the falls?
keett712

If it’s just at ground level 30 mins should be adequate. If you want to reach the upper levels allocate 1& 1/2 hours to 2 hours dependent on your exploring needs.

Is it possible to park the car overnight (2 nights)? If yes, how much does it cost and how save is it? Thanks a lot!

Hello there. There is no overnight parking on Skogáfoss. There are signs everywhere that warn you parking after 7:00PM is prohibited. There are, however, a campsite and a hotel in the vicinity, just minutes away from the waterfall. The campsite is about 1500kr. and the hotel rates change depending on the season. Hope this information helps.

Is it there electricity? I need to charge my cameras and drones batteries, so I'm looking the best camping around this area to stay. Could you tell me if there is enough connections for it (does each spot has its connection?) Is this camping the best around for that?

Not sure if there is electricity availble to use - there is a modern cafe nearby and, within the camping ground a hut for facilities (showers and toilets) which may have shaver outlets. If you spoke to the folk in the cafe I'm sure you could come to some arrangement!
