We were on a horse ride in the mountains around Skorrahestar. We were 2 participants. One was a novice on a horse, and one experienced.
Sunna was our guide and she had planned the best trip for us even though our riding skills are so different.
We experienced the fantastic Icelandic nature at first hand, and Sunna managed to make a trip that gave us both a wonderful trip and a wonderful experience. There was fun in the family guest house afterwards and story telling. Our hosts were very hospitable and answered all our curious questions. It was a really nice day.

My daughter and I are avid horseback riders and this was a fantastic ride. The horses were so responsive. My husband and two other occasional riders came along and also had a fantastic experience, feeling safe and in control the whole time. This is an Icelandic, multi-generational, family owned business. The daughter was our guide and was so friendly, informed, supportive, and entertaining. The ride ended with a guitar serenade and a delicious treat with the family. I would do it again in a heartbeat and recommend to anyone who asked.

Wonderful experience at a delightful location. Horses obviously loved and well cared for and each horse perfectly matched to the riders from experienced to novice. Doddi was the perfect guide and host and we would highly recommend them to you.

Our ride within the fjord, with Doddi, our guide from the Skorrahestar farm family, was simply unforgettable.
I have never been on a horse before, but with a few good tips, I was able to ride my horse Skálmöld "the fighting lady" just fine. Doddi took us for a breathtaking tour, through small cliffs, tiny streams, surrounded by the (melting) snow-covered mountains delimiting the fjord. He explained us a lot of things about the horses, the flora and the fauna of the fjord, and then he told us a few stories about the ancient past of the lands we were treading.
After the ride, the family offered us coffee and they showed us how to prepare and eat the Pönnukökur, an icelandic dessert with pancakes, jam and whipped cream.
In the end, this was really one of the best memories our trip in Iceland.

This was just the best experience! Doddi and family are so warm and welcoming! We were matched up with our horses very well. The ride was gorgeous and the stories, history, and folk tales Doddi told us were fascinating plus getting to see the ruins! The horses were so sweet and fun to ride, my first time tolting, such a smooth gait! The pancakes with the family afterwards were scrumptious and chatting with the family was delightful. I highly recommend this experience!

My wife was a bit apprehensive about this activity as she had never ridden a horse before, but after showing her some reviews and photos, she decided to do it! And we are both so glad she did, what an experience!
It was a wet and windy Monday morning which had dented our excitement and expectations of the ride, but we needn´t have worried, We arrived 30mins before the arranged time, and Doddi welcomed us with a smiling face and a few jokes, he invited us into his home, gave us tea and coffee and let us change before the ride, it was lovely and warm, as well as spectacularly clean!
When we were ready, we headed down to the stables to familiarise ourselves with the horses that we were going to be riding, as well as getting suited up in the appropriate clothing and gear for the ride, and for the weather. It was then that Doddi told us there was nobody else on the ride that day and it was going to be a private tour!
The ride itself was amazing, walking through the natural beauty of Eastern Iceland, going up and down hills and even crossing a couple of rivers, it took my wife a while to get settled and a few times she panicked but Doddi was really comprehensive and we just took our time. As well as the riding, Doddi also told us about the plants that grow in the area, about wildlife and the weather etc, and we even stopped to try blueberries growing along the way! There was also a a few photo opportunties when Doddi took our picture with our mobile phone, which we were so glad of as it was difficult to take one ourselves, especially with all the clothes we had on, lol. The ride lasted about 2 hours, which I think was just right as it was cold and I think my wife had had enough, lol. Having said that, if it had just been Doddi and me, I would have ridden all day!
After getting back and getting changed we were able to give our horses a treat, which they obviously enjoyed and then we were invited back into his home where we sat down to enjoy some homemade Icelandic pancakes with some delicious blueberry jam and Rhubarb jam and some hot chocolate that really hit the spot. What made it extra special was that his wife, daughter and grandson joined us and we spent about 45mins just chatting about this and that, it was truly a unique experience that I didn´t get during the rest of my stay in Iceland (17 days). It was so nice to just chat to Icelanders that could give us a true idea of what Icelandic culture really was (not just what we should visit and what we should do during our trip).
Overall, I would highly recommend this tour as it was one of the best experiences I had during my stay in Iceland and not only for the riding, for the experience as a whole with Doddi and his family who were all kind and interesting people and also for the delicious pancakes and jam! I would definitely do it again if I am ever back in this wonderful country! Thank you so much to you Doddi and of course to your family.

Hello Ben,
Thank you very much for this nice review of our riding tours. We appreciate it much. It's nice that you enjoyed the ride, and your wife as well. She did good!
We always try our best to make our guests get the full Icelandic experience. It's good you found yourself getting it at least here with us.
Could you please send us to our email some of the pictures I took, for us as a memory? :-)
Have a great day, and if you are ever back please come for a visit!
Regards,
Doddi

My wife and I have just returned from a ten day trip to Iceland, which was made into a fantastic experience by our visit to Skorrehestar. The accommodation was excellent, the extended family couldn't have been more welcoming and the town and area were beautiful and interesting, from the public swimming pool to filming sea birds on the cliffs beyond the town. All of this was brought to life by Doddi, Thea, Sunna Julia and Carlien, over long breakfasts and evening chats. A really big thank you for the anniversary cake too. I would recommend more than an overnight flying visit to really appreciate this part of Iceland, and the kitchen facilities are excellent so you can save some money too!
What can I add that others haven't put? The aspect that I would like to emphasise is the quality of the riding experience itself. On the first day we rode together with some less experienced riders and the 2hr ride was nicely pitched, interesting (yes, including singing and dancing!) and with well chosen horses for each of our abilities - I rode Skumar.
On the next two days there was just Angela, me, Doddi, (and Carlien on the first day), so Doddi picked routes that gave more challenge. At other riding venues we have been disappointed with the routes available or horses, but not here. I rode Stubbr in the mornings, and another horse in the afternoon which we took along as a hand horse. This was because I am 6'2" and well built - don't be put off Icelandic Horses if you are big, they are incredibly strong - and the change of horses was planned to give me a good quality ride all day, rather than because the horse wouldn't cope.
We rode up and down very steep gullies, crossed big rivers, rode onto the black sand beach, rode down the fjord and up the valleys, and experienced all 5 gaits during the ride. Had we gone in July we could have gone right up the mountains, but in early June the snow that remained didn't allow this.
So to sum up, while Skorrehestar is suitable for absolute beginners (two German lady beginners were riding as we left and looked to be enjoying themselves), it also has everything to offer more advanced riders the experience they are looking for. And all in the most congenial and beautiful of settings.

We had heard that horseback riding was a must-do in Iceland and couldn´t have been happier about our experience with Doddi. As inexperienced riders, Doddi was able to make sure we understood the basics of horseback riding, while also providing a beautiful, exciting ride. The horses were very gentle, extremely well-trained and energetic. After days of driving on the Ring Road, seeing the beautiful eastern countryside by horseback was an amazing change of pace. Our two hour tour with Doddi took us through the river and up a few small hills, providing great views. Would definitely recommend doing an extended tour to really take advantage of his knowledge of the land.

Hi!
What is the youngest age that children are allowed to ride?
Thanks!
Written June 25, 2018
Hello Christine,
Thank you for your message. Children have to be over 10 years old to be able to ride by themselves. From the age 6-10 years old one of us (the tour guides) has them on a security rain. 6 years and younger we walk with them (maximum 1 hour ride). I hope this is the information you are asking for, but if not please ask more :)
Regards,
Sunna Júlía
