Very Cool Even if You Don’t Walk Behind
This is the famous and beautiful “walk behind” waterfall that we saw on our South Coast tour. However, we viewed it as close as we could without walking behind. The path taking you up to the waterfall has a handrail and is an easy walk. But as you get closer this path loses the handrail, and you must climb over an area of large wet rocks to get to a muddy path that gets you behind the waterfall. Our travel guide warned us it is slippery. The day we went it was raining and very windy. Even though we had hiking shoes, we didn’t want to chance it. We are senior citizens, but we are very active. We weren’t the only ones that didn’t walk behind, many younger people decided against it too. The waterfall is lovely to look at from the three sides we could easily see. Just be aware the entire path is not easy. I see some people commenting on wearing rain ponchos to view this waterfall, and for other Icelandic excursions. You will get wet as you get near this waterfall. We also had wind and rain the day we went, which is very common weather in Iceland. Ponchos are useless. They blow up around your face, leaving your body soaked. We had waterproof rain jackets with a hood, waterproof pants and waterproof hiking shoes. We didn’t need them on all our tours, but boy did they come in handy when we did, and they kept us warm and dry. They are a good investment for an Iceland trip.

    Seljalandsfoss
Have you ever walked behind an enormous waterfall? If you have not had this experience then visiting Seljalandsfoss is a must while vacationing in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is located in South Iceland. You can obtain access driving directly or taking one of The Ring Road tours. An Interesting fact is that Seljalandsfoss means waterfall in Icelandic. This waterfall is one of the few in Iceland where you have an opportunity to walk behind the falls however, this can only be done during certain seasons due to ice in the winter. Seljalandsfoss is amazing to see during the summer months but prepare yourself for the short journey. Make sure to wear some type of rain jacket and make sure your electronics are protected. It is fun but be prepared to get wet for a moment. There is a concrete path that leads to the trail however, there is a point when it becomes only rocks so make sure that you have the mobility to safely navigate this area. It is a short trip and relatively easy trip however, if an individual has mobility issues I suggest to enjoy the beauty of the falls from afar. Seljalandsfoss provided my son and I with our first opportunity to see a waterfall so close up and this experience did not disappoint. It was a rare up close and personal opportunity to experience the beauty of an amazing waterfall. I highly recommend adding a visit to your to do list while visiting Iceland.

    Better in summer
2024-March. We visited through a group tour. It was the 4th stop of our tour. There were a lot of parking spaces for vehicles. Tour buses parked closer to the falls. Our guide said there were restrooms and snacks for purchase beside the parking lot. It was cloudy, snowing, and windy when we went. The ground is a combination of gravel, rocks, boulders, and a grated staircase. There were metal handrails at the beginning of the staircase. Then a rope that doesn't serve any purpose because it was very loose. It was very windy so we only went 1/3 of the way to the back of the falls. This is Iceland's bucket list, a must-see if you visit Iceland. Please give a thumbs up if this review helped you in any way.

Want to experience walking behind a waterfall, then this one is for you. You will no doubt get wet so do wear waterproofs and watch out for slippery rocks and also ice. Not for the feint-hearted and those unsteady on their feet. Keep children close. Quite a view from behind the falling water.

Popular waterfall, great to see from behind as well
Close proximity to the ring road. Quick tips: there is a parking fee here, as well as a food truck if you want a quick bite to eat a smoked lamb sandwich and grab a tea/coffee. If you intend on getting closer and/or walking behind, it would be helpful to wear your waterproof jacket/pants/shoes. Can get very busy. A nearby hike to Gljufrabui waterfall-500m away to the right, a short trek which is worth it (you have to navigate around water but once you see the falls is awesome). The added trek also includes some smaller falls. Great to spend a 60-90 minutes here. Please indicate with thanks if you found this helpful :)

The Icelandic "must-do", wear waterproof layers
This is the one you see in everyone's photos. Beautiful waterfall, easy access right off of the highway and plenty of parking. Easy to walk behind this one although the path is not developed. Easy for most to see from the front, need to be a bit more steady footed to walk behind. (Good hiking shoes worked just fine). Wear waterproof layers - you will get wet! The spray from the falls is intense. Even better is the hidden waterfalls not too far away - recommend waking just a little further to see the falls hidden in the rocks 5 min down the path. This is a must-do on everyone's south coast tour!

    Best Waterfall
Without doubt I would say is the best waterfall in Iceland. Some people prefer big and huge but this is the perfect waterfall. You can walk behind and take stunning pictures. On the same view you can spot 4 small waterfalls running down.

Stunning waterfall with lots of opportunities for nice photos. You will get wet and the path behind the falls is a must but it is a little bit difficult and I wouldn’t recommend taking small children all the way around.
There are toilets, hot chocolate and islandic doughnuts.

Fun and exciting. Paid parking (900 isk, around €6). From there, a few minutes on foot, along a small road and then a staircase, you can pass behind (and in some places even under) the waterfall. Absolutely recommended raincoat, waterproof trousers and waterproof shoes, you get a lot wet!
From there another path starts for a few minutes, I recommend you do it because at the end of the road there is an even more beautiful hidden waterfall!

Iceland is full of small and large waterfalls, normal and majestic, but Seljalandsfoss is one of a kind, so much so that it attracts many tourists. The natural context that surrounds it is similar to that of nearby Skogafoss, a large prairie, where once there was the sea, which meets a steep cliff of black rocks covered with large, very green mosses that create magnificent color contrasts. The water flow is not excessive but the height of over 60 meters still generates amazement in the tourist. A narrow slippery path allows you to pass behind the waterfall thanks to a hollow in the rock. The emotional involvement given by the show that can be admired in this position is difficult to describe, I'll just leave it to imagine.

I had a truly awful experience with Reykjavik Sightseeing during my recent trip to Iceland. I booked a tour with them, only to be left stranded because they sent the wrong bus to the pick-up location. There was absolutely no communication or assistance from the company, and I ended up missing the entire tour.

To add insult to injury, I was charged $123 for this mishap. When I reached out to their customer service, they refused to take any responsibility and have done everything possible to avoid issuing a refund. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the situation, they’ve shown no interest in helping or rectifying their mistake.

I strongly advise anyone considering Reykjavik Sightseeing to stay away. Their lack of organization and unwillingness to provide basic customer service will ruin your trip. Don’t waste your time or money on such an unreliable company.

Gorgeous waterfall The unique thing about this waterfall is you can walk behind it. It's a little slippery and you will definitely get wet but its so worth it. If you have them wear some waterproof pants over your other pants and of course a rain jacket preferably with a hood. It's so fun. The walk from the parking lot is an easy stroll and there are some food kiosks for a snack and drinks. A great and beautiful adventure. on the left side of the parking lot there is a place to fill your water bottle with pure fresh water.

We enjoyed many amazing waterfalls in Iceland, the large and awe inspiring and the smaller and more accessible. Seljalandsfoss is not the biggest, but is singular because you get to walk all the way around it and get really close to it. Remember your raincoat, because of the steady drizzle. If you only visit one waterfall, let this be it.
