About
The LAVA Centre features an interactive exhibition exploring the art and science of geology and the volcanic systems in Iceland. Information from the past century’s eruptions demonstrates just how strong the presence of volcanoes has in contemporary Iceland. Feel the forces of nature as you experience an earthquake and see the Fiery Heart of Iceland, a 12 m high structure simulating the Mantle plume and the magma flow underneath Iceland. In an educational learning centre, you can explore the wonders of volcanoes and earthquakes through interactive computers and there’s also a cinema auditorium where visitors can see the magnificence of volcanic eruptions in HD 4K. Please note that the last entry into the exhibition is at 16:30 and the movie is at 16:40. The exhibition closes at 17:00.

- Adam HChicago, Illinois33 contributionsExcellent Context for Iceland's Geology and VolcanosWe were staying in Hella, and visited the museum early on in our trip, which was a great choice, because it gave us the context for Iceland's geology and volcanic history before we saw it up close and personal. We learned about the different types of volcanos and lava flows with very effective and interactive exhibits. The sights, sounds and information were top-notch. We spent an hour there, but could have probably spent another 30-40 minutes if we had more time. If you are in the Hella are or touring the South Coast, I would recommend stopping here.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 17, 2024
- Jocelyn BSaskatoon, Canada13 contributionsImmersive and very informative - must do for context before exploring the surroundings! We were travelling around Iceland on our own and visited the museum before adventuring closer to many of the volcanoes. The exhibit and film really helped us to understand the context of the area and Iceland's volcanic history - past, present, and future - especially the details that we weren't previously familiar with. The exhibit is very interactive and engaging to learn about the different types of volcanoes and magma/lava flows. We were surprised that it was not only interactive but somewhat immersive by incorporating multiple senses into the experience. We spent about 75 minutes to watch the film and wander through the exhibit rooms, reading most of the information available. We chose to do the viewing platform last, which helped to incorporate the information from the exhibit into the surroundings. We would recommend stopping here and taking your time to learn about Iceland's volcanoes past, present, and future.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 2, 2024
- IcicleCreekUnited States177 contributionsDon't drive past the LAVA CenterOther than the Perlan, I don’t think there’s a finer museum in Iceland than the LAVA Center in Hvolsvolluron, about a half-hour past Selfoss on the early part of the South Coast road. It's spendy, even for Iceland, but as others have said here, the Center provides great context for Iceland’s geology and for what you’ll see throughout your visit. The exhibits are interactive and educational, and if the weather is clear, the observation deck provides a great view of some of the nearby volcanoes and the impacts they’ve had on the land.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2024

It turns out the place has restricted opening days currently - only open Thursday to Sunday. We had booked tickets in advance for a Monday, but had not been informed so we very disappointed to Stevie it was closed when we arrived, and that they had not notified us! I wrote them about this right afterwards, and have not heard from them more than 24 hours later. I have received an auto email though saying the hours we enjoyed our visit! I do hope to get an apology and refund at one point!

We stopped here to use the toilet on the way along the coast and the parking is free. You can either buy a ticket for just the film/cinema or the film/cinema and interactive museum. We paid for the film/cinema and it was about £8-9~ and lasted about 15 minutes. It was a range of photos and videos with dramatic music, definitely not worth it. If you’re coming here it seems best to do the interactive museum from the good reviews below. The staff were super friendly and welcoming.

Very friendly man greeted us at the entrance and made our 11 year old feel welcomed by giving him a 'special' pencil. The museum is interactive and set up very nicely. It's not very big, which works well with a kid. They have a nice film (with no narrator) in one of their rooms. Their gift shop seemed to have some really nice things. The cafe wasn't open while we were there. The restrooms were very clean.

We went to watch the movie today. Exactly what we thought it would be. Pictures, video of different eruptions over the past 50 years. Great music with video no narrative, however it told the exact date and location of each erruption.. Great history of Iveland volcanic activity

Interesting and informative museum on the science and history of earthquakes and volcanoes. You can stand on disks in the museum and experience different types of earthquakes. Well worth a visit. The cafe was closed when we were there but there are outside picnic tables and a small shop selling snacks in the nearby filling station.

I surprisingly really enjoyed the lava center and would highly recommend it to everyone. It really gives you an insight look at the history, geology and science behind volcanoes in a really interesting and engaging way. Unfortunately weather didn’t allow a clear view on the viewing deck but on a nice day I bet it’s spectacular.

Maria was super helpful giving my five and seven year old a guided tour when we came in late in the day. The experience is well worth the price. And my daughter learned a lot and stay engaged.
Reserve at least an hour.
exhibition experience is likely too intense for five year olds.

Hi sorry to answer this in English, but here goes.
The movie has no words, no text, only pictures and music. Designed so everybody can enjoy it.
The exhibition is designed so people can interact, touch, feel and play. In our experience children understand the exhibition better than adults, no matter the language. The text in the exhibition is in Icelandic and English but we have maps in 12 languages to navigate the exhibits for non english speakers.

What is the average amount of time that two adults would spend at the Lava Centre? That is if you purchased the "full experience" ticket.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Is it possible to visit the gift shop and restaurant without buying a ticket for the museum? We are passing by and it would be a nice place to get some souvenirs and a hot meal, but we probably won’t have time to look around.

Yes of course! Rammagerðin gift shop is one of the best in the country, includes a 66North store, and then we are just opening a new and cozy café and a grab & go store for the road snacks! We also have free WCs and WIFI.

Hi,
Are there any tours that include the Lava Center?
I only have the 1 day layover and have done the Golden Triangle on a previous visit so thought this would be a good place to see but Car hire and taxi;s are very (too) expensive!!!
Thanks for any help>

Yes there are a few tours including LAVA Centre. One of our favorite is done by a company called Hidden Iceland. The tour is called South Coast: Fire & Ice Tour.
