I just returned home a few days ago and can't stop thinking about this trip - it was definitely the highlight of my trip to Iceland. I went on the 5 day Ultimate Hekla ride with Stefnir as our guide and Anita providing the delicious meals. Stefnir's knowledge of both horses and the history/geography of Iceland was amazing. It was a pleasure to go to a place where they clearly value their horses and treat clients to an extraordinary experience.

Anita and Stefnir are the most wonderful hosts and their horses are incredible. I spent 5 days there, and experiencing the awe-inspiring Icelandic scenery from the back of one of their horses is something I'll never forget. The horses are clearly the star of the show. Anita takes the time to talk to you about your riding experience and matches you up perfectly to the right mount. The horses are all willing and good natured and everyone ends up wanting to take them home at the end of the visit! Stefnir is an excellent guide and as good natured as the horses. Nothing seems to phase him and he's as professional and knowledgable about horses as he is about Iceland. You learn a lot on his rides! The rides were appropriately paced and we got to experience long stretches at the famous tolt. As the group got more comfortable in the saddle, Stefnir added in faster tolts and canters across the lush fields and it was quite a sight to see the horses' long manes flying. It was so much fun! At the end of each day, Anita provides a hearty, delicious dinner with many recipes handed down from her grandmother. After dinner is a perfect time to walk the grounds and get up close and personal with the horses in the pastures. Each one is more beautiful than the other! One note worth mentioning: for those used to an American standard of accommodation, you will probably find the lodging very rustic. It's a dormitory-style bunkhouse and if you all know one another, you'll not have too hard a time in a communal space but if you're sharing with strangers, it can lead to some difficulty. There is only one shower and one toilet in the bunkhouse but two more toilets and showers in another outbuilding. There's now a brand new hotel a few short minutes down the road, so you may want to inquire about that as a lodging option if the bunkhouse doesn't appeal to you. Aslo, during the rides, there are no bathroom facilities along the way so Stefnir stops at specific points where there's some privacy behind rocks. But these are all minor issues and shouldn't diminish in any way the outstanding experience of riding at Hekluhestar. You'll walk away with a deep appreciation for the Icelandic horses and a feeling that Anita and Stefnir have been your friends forever. I highly recommend it!!

We absolutly loved it. Before we stayed at the Guesthouse of Anita and Stefnir, we had a very nice E-Mail Contact and they helped us with all our questions. When we arrived the hole Family+ Bowie(dog) welcomed us and showed us all the different animals ( Horses, chicken, sheeps and a rabbit that thinks he is a chicken). We had a breakfast ( with fresh eggs) and after the Summer Nights Ride, we had a midnight Snack decorated with a lot of candals and typically, selfmade sweets from Iceland.( It was so much that we took some of it for the next day). The ride was amazing! We both haven‘t had been riding for years, but it worked very well. We went through rivers and up on hills in all speeds. :) We will definatly come back and visit Anita and Stefnir again! Thank you for this amazing stay at your guesthouse! :)

Anita was so hospitable and every stop along the tour was so well planned. My favorite spot was unicorn mountain and the mountain but we stayed in there. I got to ride three incredible horses and the views and gallops were to die for! I am so lucky that we found Anita and her family to take us on our first 8 day riding tour. I would reccomend this tour to any intermediate rider who has a great sense of adventure and wants to push themselves to expierence so many new things!

I went to Hekluhestar last year and since then only think about returning there. The team was incredibly friendly, the trip well organized, the horses kind and willing, with unbelievable Icelandic landscapes. Thank you Anita for everything, and see you soon again!!!
