If you love horses and nature - you simply have to go!
I would say this trip is to great to put into words, if you're a horse-person (doesn't have to be Icelandic horses you're use to riding) and you enjoy the wilds, this is something you really should let yourself experience.

Riding in the beautiful Icelandic highland, in the Hekla area is just amazing, and with Hekluhestar you get the family-closeness as a free bonus ;)
And the extra horses running free with you riding is so so special!
I went for the 6 and the 8 days, and both trips are great, I liked the 8-days best, simply because its longer, and I never wanted to stop :)
I also took the shorter trip around the farm, and that was great too.
The horses are so strong, durable and incredible characters, so easy to fall in love with.

Not coming back is simply not an option for me ;D

I knew from the description of the ride that I'd be in for an adventure but I didn't really understand just how wild the trip would be. Lots of riding on wonderful smooth Icelandic horses, fabulous food, incredible logistics and best of all amazing staff. This company is family run and I cannot say enough positive about Anita, Stefanic, Anthony, Brodee and Linda along with the fine horses they love and care for. This is a very physical trip, even for a fit 61 year old who rides hard several times/week. It is not a stationary ride and thus you sleep in a few different types of facilities during the week. They're all clean, warm and satisfactory but are NOT four star hotels-just so you know. It was the adventure of a lifetime and I am so glad I went. I did go alone and always felt comfortable, welcome and certainly made friends. Thank you everyone.

You know you are on the best vacation when everyone else on vacation is taking pictures of yours! I will never forget galloping alongside 40 free horses through the highlands of Iceland. The scenery was amazing and we even lucked out with great weather. The staff was helpful, friendly and 100% engaged in making this an awesome experience. The horses were incredibly well cared for and well mannered. Observing them in their herd was just fascinating and really made this more than just a horseback ride. The accommodations make for a rustic, authentic experience and the home cooked Icelandic dinners were a great way to finish a full day of riding. I'm definitely coming back and recommending this to all my friends who love riding horses. We had experienced riders from their teens to their 60's all raving about this experience.

Did circular ride from the farm near Hella.

A fantastic ride and holiday - looked after very well by Anita and Steffnir (and their small team).

Amazing scenery, lovely Icelandic horses, great staff and fellow guests.

Probably the best riding holiday we've done.

The midnight ride in the beginning of June at Hekluhestar was the perfect end of an exciting week in Iceland for my daughter and myself. The atmosphere at the farm created by Anita and her family, the horses, cat and dog was magical. The horses were extremely well trained and pure happiness to ride. Following the three-hour ride in the beautiful Icelandic summer night, Anita invited us in into her home for a late night meal. The night was spent at the farm and the following morning Anita had prepared a plentiful brunch in her kitchen. We left the farm with a warm feeling inside hoping to return for a longer stay next time. /Christel and Nicole from Sweden

An unexpected gem, in the heart of Iceland's horse country! Despite being tricky to find (signposted Austvadsholt, not Hekluhestar), it offers comfortable accommodation in an exciting grass-roofed guesthouse / dorm, particularly for horse loving kids. Anita and Nina could not have been more kind and welcoming, even at short notice. We really recommend 1hr-2hr horse excursion with fun for the whole family.
Sleeping-bag accommodation (they even keep some spare). Remember to stop in Hella at the ATM before your visit.

I went to Hekluhestar last year and since then only think about returning there. The team was incredibly friendly, the trip well organized, the horses kind and willing, with unbelievable Icelandic landscapes. Thank you Anita for everything, and see you soon again!!!

We haven't found the time to go riding there but the E-Mail contact which we had was very lovely and friendly.
We weren't sure first if the weather would be great and they offered that we could come and see their young horses if the weather would be bad.
Very friendly people there!

I just returned home a few days ago and can't stop thinking about this trip - it was definitely the highlight of my trip to Iceland. I went on the 5 day Ultimate Hekla ride with Stefnir as our guide and Anita providing the delicious meals. Stefnir's knowledge of both horses and the history/geography of Iceland was amazing. It was a pleasure to go to a place where they clearly value their horses and treat clients to an extraordinary experience.
