About
In the heart of our country, on the edge of the city he called home, is the final resting place of President Abraham Lincoln, his wife, and three of their children. Built with donations from across America, the Lincoln Tomb honors the memory of our nation's greatest president and those who struggled with him toward a new birth of freedom. Tours of the building are self-guided. However, we always have staff or volunteers on hand who are happy to answer any questions you may have.

- Dr_XaosPalatine, Illinois1,308 contributionsFormal and Dignifed MausoleumImpressively built and far bigger inside the tomb than what the outside would indicate. There's a lot of intentional design and decor to the tomb. It was interesting to hear the how and why the architect(s) chose the aspects that they did. There are also several different statues of Abraham Lincoln through the tomb, which depict various aspects of his life. His wife and three of his sons are also interred there. Place is kept clean and very well maintained.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 3, 2024
- angieabruzzeseNarrowsburg, New York232 contributionsA must for the Land of Lincoln experience! We learned more of the family dynamic in the Lincoln family. Knowledgeable volunteers. Great statues, nice to pay respects at his tomb. Free and quick, recommend as part of the Abraham Lincoln historical experience.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- Rodney SBirmingham, Alabama88 contributionsClass act! This monument is under restoration but it is extremely well taken care of and clean. There was a “porch talk” by the employees that told different stories and facts about Lincoln. This is a great free historical site for all ages.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 7, 2024
- Miranda108 contributionsA beautiful place to pay your respectsThe outside of the tomb was under construction when I went but you could still see everything and go inside. The outside is beautiful with a few statutes to see. When you enter the tomb you walk in a circle and in the middle is the resting place of Abraham Lincoln and his family. The day I visited there were a few historians giving small lectures outside the house next to the tomb. They answered questions and had lots of good information about the tomb and Abraham Lincolns life. Overall a nice place to visit and pay your respects.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten August 11, 2024
- RayPharmNew York49 contributionsRepair work the day we were thereWorth a stop for any fan of Abraham Lincoln visiting the area. Unfortunately for us, we were in town on a day they were doing repair work (most of the statues covered in plastic). Still, had access to the interior (and was able to drive around the hill to the original tomb (walkway between the two was closed off).Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 31, 2024
- ALG1603262 contributionsA beautiful tributeThis cemetery is gorgeous. Here you can see where Lincoln's coffin was on display for visitors in the receiving vault behind the memorial. Slightly behind the memorial, above the receiving vault is his temporary tomb with headstone. Finally you can visit his permanent resting place. It's beautiful, somber, and leaves an impression on you.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2024

We visited Mccombs and cemetery on memorial day weekend. Even then was not too busy. The building itself was air-conditioned and had a nice display of periodic statues and then the room where Abraham Lincoln was buried. His families tombs are across the way from him also it was a lovely tribute. The cemetery is expensive, beautiful and we could’ve spent the whole day there looking at the different displays along with the memorial. Lincoln’s original crypt is also on the grounds behind the final resting place.

Awesome!! Much more than I expected. My only disappointment was a very LOUD volunteer. She was talking to a group of school age children. She was near the front door but she was so loud that it echoed through the entire building. I found it extremely disrespectful.

This is such a well done memorial. It is well thought out and very respectful. I noticed, much like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, that people are talking throughout the memorial until they get to the tomb. Then, it is silence. People were respectful, quiet, mournful, and just taking it in. The building and tomb were beautiful and it is a wonderful tribute to one of the most influential Presidents that we will ever have.

It's a cemetery about 3 miles from the museum. The Lincoln Tomb is a short walk from parking. It really doesn't take long if you go inside and observe the actual tomb of Lincon and his family. The war memorials a short drive away are also cool to look at. Its free. Its worth the effort.

We took our kids on a field trip, and the day we ended up here it was lightly drizzling, and overcast…fitting. It was empty and quiet. You are able to tour the building yourself, including where the majority of the family is laid to rest. It felt almost personal and emotional all alone inside. Such an amazing memory made with my kids!

Walked the area and checked out the receiving tomb while waiting for our tour to go inside. All Covid precautions were being followed. Our temperature was taken, everyone had masks on. Only 10 people allowed in the building and we were let in 2 at a time. Very safe and a fun day learning about President Lincoln.

We visited Springfield for the first time. It is full of the history of Abraham Lincoln and we throughtly enjoyed visiting the cemetery to see his grave. There is a self guided tour through this monument making your way to the family graves at the back. It took us about half-an-hour to make our way through reading about each of the smaller statues that are along the walk inside.
Once we completed our walk we took some time to drive through the cemetery which is very large and beautiful. Great part of our Lincoln adventure.

the lincoln tomb is a worthy place to visit wile in town.IT should be on every visitors list who is here to see and explore all things lincoln. if you enter through the main gate, the memorial will be up the hill on your right. You can drive your car in and around the cemetery so you dont have to walk.
When you arrive , there will be a guard placing people in line to go inside and see the tomb. You know the whole social distancing thing with covid and all. wile inside they did a very good job with the way things are displayed .
there are public restrooms here for your use. as a side note, you can not walk up on the monument do to the covid restrictions.
Wile you are here it would be worth your time to drive into the cemetery and see the war memorials just down the road (there will be markers to show the way). we spent just over an hour here.

Not much to see on your self guided tour. It is a short walk around the tomb with many statues in miniature of Lincoln statues all over the country. It is an okay visit - likely a 30 minute attraction.

Visiting Lincoln's burial site and the breathtaking memorial to this great President is something everyone who visits Springfield should plan to do. The memorial is beautiful inside and out. Mary Todd Lincoln and 3 of their 4 sons are also buried here. Only their oldest son lived to a ripe age and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The others died at ages 4, 12 and 18. Masks are required and silent phones inside the memorial. Behind, and down the stairs is the original burial site where he remained for less than one year. After visiting, drive to the war memorials ( WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam) also in the cemetery. The WWII memorial was very moving as it follows the timelines for Europe on one wall and the Pearl Harbor side of the war on another wall with a huge globe marking each battle with a numbered metal pin; extremely well done.

Is it possible to go inside the tomb now, as it was pre-covid? Or is it closed?

How far is it to Oak Ridge from Lincoln's Library. Is there public transportation.
Written February 4, 2017
Probably about a 4 mile car ride. I don't think they have busses that go there.
Written March 4, 2017
Is it possible to do a self-guided tour of the tomb? I will be a little short on time and know guided tours can be quite lengthy. Thanks.
Written November 8, 2016
I'm sure it is. It doesn't cover a large area in any case.
Written November 8, 2016
Not only is it open but I think it's a perfect time to visit! We toured on Sunday morning not long after it opened and practically had the place to ourselves.

Can you still see the place where he used to be buried???
Written June 23, 2016
You can still see the public receiving vault where President Lincoln and his son, Willie, were first interred upon arrival from Washington D.C. It is at the bottom of the hill behind the Tomb. This is also where his funeral was held. He was there from May of 1865 to December 1865.
Halfway up the hill, there is a granite marker. This marks the site where a temporary tomb stood until the tomb was completed in 1874.

I wonder if they don't have any guides at all or if you got there at the wrong time? I visited it too many years ago, Most things
that I go back to are never the same.
Written June 23, 2016
We have been there just about 6 weeks ago and there were greeters at the entrance of the Tomb and inside there were a couple of guides that asked if we had any questions. There were willing to answer as many questions as we had. Because there were two or there, they would talk to people as they arrived. I hope this helps.

Where is the stone where you can leave the pennies for Abe?
Written January 22, 2015
Stones are left at the site of the original tomb which is a simple stone marker just down the hill from the Lincoln Tomb. Others cast stones into the receiving vault at the bottom of the hill where his body initially lay. Rubbing the nose of the Lincoln bust just outside of the Lincoln Tomb is a must!
