I get to go to the capital from time to time for work. It is a very interesting trip to make, for the architecture, history, and to see how our government works (and doesn't work) you can stop in and see your local rep but more likely one of their aides and let them know what is on your mind... The Illinois State Capitol is absolutely beautiful! Tours are provided. A bit of history comes alive. Free. Security check. Schedule a day when the legislators are in town. See the State Government at work! Sit in the House and Senate chambers.

My wife and I were very impressed with the building, lots of beautiful marble, statues, gold leaf, etc. My wife became less impressed when she heard that the legislators would not meet again for months. A huge monument to the people who get little done. She became even less impressed when I reminded her that they voted for the recent... More

Have taken the tour more than once and never been disappointed with the guides. Yes, they have a script; however, they insert their own personalities into it so the tour is fresh each time. If you have questions, they gladly answer. Another perk is that you never know who you may meet while on a tour. Secretary of State Jesse... More

The capitol tour was worthwhile. The building is beautiful. I am from Madison and our capital has more impressive outside gardens but I think the Springfield capital is grander inside. There is free parking about a block away. While in the neighborhood, we also visited the "old" state capital. The building is not very grand but they had a person... More

Seriously, I'd avoid this place like the plague if I were in your shoes...better to hit the old State Capitol, although that isn't much better, but at least you'd avoid the numerous politicians and state staffers that seem to suck the very joy out of the air

We got there after closing, but the guard let us in to look at the spectacular dome, which was truly inspiring. He gave us some literature, and directed us to the old capital. We'll get there on time next time!

The tour around the State Capitol gives an insight into the workings of the US legislature, which can often seem very confusing to a foreigner like me. The guide was well informed and gave lots of detail about the history of the building and the people who have graced it over the years. The architecture is very imposing as are... More

The view of the building from blocks away drew us in. We weren't sure if we were allowed inside at all, but the guards at the door welcomed us in with smiles and told us we were free to roam the place at will. There is a visitors desk that provides all sorts of information and offers guided tours of... More
