About
The Settlement Center provides a wonderful insight into Iceland’s history in two exhibitions one about the settlement of Iceland and the other on Egils saga that took place in the neighbourhood. The exhibitions offer a wealth of information with an audio guide in 15 languages. It also gives you the chance to put your visit into the context of the country’s past. The exhibitions recreate the fascinating drama of the sagas and the birth of this island nation. The goal is to make the ancient sagas accessible to all ages in an entertaining way.

- Eric SToulouse, France1 contributionThe perfect first step to discover IcelandOne of the best museum experiences we have ever had! It completely captivated us with its animated and staged sceneries, supported by engaged and perfectly executed explanations in our languages (we used French and Swedish). We learned a lot that we will never forget. It was the perfect introduction to our visit to Iceland.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 13, 2023
- David MBromley, United Kingdom1 contributionLittle and perfectInteresting, informative and really good fun exhibition thanks to imaginative design. The coffee in the upstairs cafe is good. Plus there's great birdwatching from the sea wall just yards away.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 25, 2024
- stephenbP28DIReykjavik, Iceland17 contributionsMust see venue! My family and I had the pleasure of visiting The Settlement Center in Borgarnes, Iceland earlier this month. My wife is an Icelander and I've lived in Iceland off-and-on for close to twenty years but we hadn't yet visited the venue until now. My family and I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed both exhibitions. While at the centre, we also enjoyed a scrumptious meal. I highly recommend the Settlement Center to both my family and friends living in Iceland and everyone who visits Iceland.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024
- Linda E43 contributionsGreat surprise, perfect little museumWell-designed museum telling two interesting stories -' (a) the early settlement, and (b) one of the Sagas. The narration in the headphones was clear and at a good pace. The dioramas illustrate it all. In the lower level exhibit about the Saga, 9 artists had been commissioned to carve the dioramas and sculptures from wood. Hearing the saga and seeing the exhibits together was a treat. Wonderful gift shop. Wonderful Cafe with excellent vegetarian buffet. Not handicap accessible.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 14, 2024

We had really high hopes and we were a little disappointed. The story was told in a confusing way with many words and names we didn’t know, because they didn’t translated them. So sometimes we got lost. Also the exhibition could not be understood without the audio guide. No texts to read or anything. But the objects were made with lots of details and love, we could tell. But we wished to have learned more about the settlement in general and not just one family.

Sorry you found the exhibit confusing and I am surprised that you did not get to know about the settlement in general. It looks like you just saw The Egils saga exhibition which is all about Egil´s family and has quite a lot of names of people - hard to translate, but The Settlement exhibition is all about the settlement. But I am glad you liked the installation which truly is made with love by several artists. So we often say it is an art exhibition as well as telling a story.
Best regards

While some of the information was interesting you can only tour with an audio guide that can’t be fast forwarded and the space was tight. My kids quickly grew impatient and bailed. I’d suggest reading up on Iceland history on your own. The attached restaurant, however, was great. I recommend the vegetarian buffet!

Although the admission was 3000 kr (£18) each it was very well done with excellent audio guide. There are two exhibitions - one on Iceland settlement and one on Egil’s Saga. The interactive nature made it absorbing. The cafe there had good quality food, the fish soup was excellent.

We came here after we did the ringroad so it was repetitive for one reason.
Second reason, the audio is mandatory and cannot be repeated or fast forwarded, I found it quite slow.
The museum is in 2 30 minute segments. The second session on Vikings in the basement is a joke. Everything is slapped together with scrap wood and very amateurish.
I cannot recommend this place, even if you are just stepping off the plane.

Thank you for your review and rating. Sorry you did not like what we present but the "amateurish scrap wood" is made specially by 9 different well known artists and we often say to our guest that it is just as much an art exhibition and most of them love it. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Iceland.

We enjoyed our tour of the Settlement Center. Just the right length, and a good introduction to the history of Iceland and the Sagas. My tweens enjoyed it...and had a lovely lunch afterward at the attached restaurant. There were only two staff members doing everything from getting tours started to staffing the meals, and they were really hustling. We were impressed!

What an engaging way to learn Iceland's settlement history and get an appreciation of the Saga form of historical record. We learned so much. The headset audio was excellent, when the waves crashed, we looked around the room for the water coming at us! The exhibits were well designed and well constructed, and varied in presentation technique so as to make each one attractive and interesting. Where else can you stand on the bow of a rocking ship making its way from Scandinavia to Iceland before modern navigational aids! Gift shop was also good. The restaurant looked quite nice but we didn't eat there.

This is a two-themed museum with headphone commentaries in multiple languages. The first, and most interesting, part covers the settlement of Iceland by the early Vikings. The second, which kids ought to enjoy more, illustrates one of the famous local sagas. The tour takes twice 30 minutes. It is worthwhile especially on a rainy day and I definitely got a much better understanding of the early settlers.

I went to the restaurant and the gift shop. According to my hotel, the Settlement Centre was where he recommended for my friends and I to go have dinner. It was a windy day with rain. We were the first to arrive. They gave us bread and butter with carcoal salt. The bread was delicious. I ordered the burger. Which was also delicious. The beef patty was cooked medium well. The vegetables were fresh. It came with a few wedges.
The gift shop was downstairs. There was also an exhibit but we didn’t want to wait 1.5hrs for the next show.

We really enjoyed this museum’s presentation of the Saga stories. The recorded guide was easy to understand and follow. The displays were very artistic. The staff was very helpful. It was a great stopping point on our way from Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes. Plan an hour unless you’re interested in their buffet which smelled great.
