    Large crater
555 shallow steps take you to the top of this crater of a dormant volcano, which you can then walk around. There are views of a mini-crater in the bottom of the crater and of another large crater nearby. Takes well under an hour to do the whole climb/walk (though there are other side trails).

A great hike up to the crater rim with a lovely view
We kicked off our Ring Road drive by climbing this crater. This was a fun hike up and walk around. Really beautiful surroundings, so definitely enjoy the view. Give yourself an hour or a little less. The steps up are nicely done and maintained. It can get windy on the crater edge, so mind your footing.

Did this as a convenient stop on the road from Akureyri to the Reyjavik area. My outdoor app told me it was a height gain of 52 feet. Well, it lied! It’s much more of a height gain than that. The craters are ok without being amazing. If you had a birds eye view maybe they would be more impressive. Another annoying thing here is they have installed relatively new wooden steps, problem is, they all blend into each other visually. So if you aren’t paying attention you could easily trip or slip. They really need to paint the edges of these steps for clarity & safety before somebody has an unfortunate accident!

A fun crater to visit with very well laid out pathway to the top and back down. Stairs have been built to take you all the way from the parking lot to the top of the crater. Personally, that is as far as needed. Once you get off the stairs, the crater is very steep and not for those with a fear of heights. Even the stairs were a little scary at the very top with the high wind blowing at the peak. There are no guardrails around the rim of the crater, so proceed with caution. Once you do reach the top of the crater, the views are stunning and the scenery is well worth the 15-20 minutes that it takes to reach the top. A walk around the rim takes another 5-7 minutes. All around the rim are great view of the area. Even if you don't take in the entire hike, be sure to stop by for a brief visit and some great photo opportunities...and a few minutes to relax before carrying on with your journey.

It was an exciting experience and fascinating feeling to climb the Grabrok volcano crater in Iceland.

There are well built steps leading up the crater, and on the other side another flight of steps can be used to climb down.

This round-trip walk takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

There are well formed obvious craters to be photographed. I really cannot think of other countries where one can see such an amazing sight, just via a short easy climb up safe man-made stairs.

Along the way, there is also gorgeous landscape scenery which one can take pictures of.

One should have warm clothing as it gets windy and cold, especially during winter. Adequate comfortable walking boots / shoes are also required.

West Iceland is indeed a superb stop for travellers, to Incredible Iceland.

The crater is in Bifröst, just next to the road 1, you just cannot miss it when you´re driving by. Take a stop at the parking lot and climb up the stairs to the top - on nice weather the view is great. It is forbidden to climb on the crater anywhere else exept on marked paths, since the lava is very vulnerable and the soil could damage. We stopped by on our way driving around the island. Nice, short visit. The climb is average high, not for bad-legged persons even when the stairs help the climb.

What a great way to begin your Ring Road Adventure. Although it's only a tiny taste of what's to come, it's a worthwhile stop on your way north on the west side of Iceland. It has stairs all the way up and an easy walking path around, so it's suitable for most. Super! Take a look!

This was our favourite crater visit - both for the stunning views and the very manageable climb. It helps to not have to concentrate so hard on every step you take (as we had with some other very steep climbs) so you can look around and appreciate the scenery on the way up. The crater had a a light dusting of snow when we were there, making it a truly magical.

This is quite an interesting place to visit. Access is very good as there are recently installed wooden steps and walkways that take you up to the rim of the crater. The views from the top were good.
I have rated the crater as only average, because there are just so many other natural sights in Iceland that are more interesting. But if you are passing by then certainly it is well worth the effort of stopping the car and making the short climb up to the top.

You cannot miss this site as you drive by on Route 1. It's a lovely spot to stop for a walk; there's a nice view from the walkway along the rim and there's a nice information sign describing the geology of the site.

Our visit to Grabrok crater turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It isn't mentioned a lot, but there were still plenty of people around as it's right next to ring road 1. You can walk up the volcano to view the crater, the nearby volcano and lovely scenery.
