Great view of Weinheim, spiral staircase, very reasonable ticket price

This is the castle that was built in the 11th or 12th century. The castle was destroyed in the middle ages and now the tower remains standing. A steep spiral staircase leads to the top for a great view of the city and the Rhein valley. The ticket price is something like 0.50 Euro. My sons (even the teenagers) love the feel of climbing up an authentic castle tower.

Homecoming

We came to Weinheim so I could visit my family. I haven't been there in 40 years, but it still had that special feeling from my childhood standing there looking at my hometown. It might be smaller than the others burgs, but the views are breathtaking. Well worth the time to visit!

Not for the faint hearted

The castle is interesting with great views over the town of Weinheim and countryside. It is about a mile walk from the station , and half a mile of this is up a very steep path. If you have difficulty walking, forget it. We tried to take a taxi, but the guy wanted to take us somewhere else, so decided to walk. What was really disappointing was that the cafe was closed ( early May, and very warm) , and the loos were locked. Hardly user friendly. Also, directions from the street maps by the station not very helpful.

Nice view of Weinheim

Having appeared in a school play (A Midsummer Night's Dream - Shakespeare), which we performed on these grounds, this fortress ruin has a special place in my heart. Everytime we have a visitor, we take a trip up here. It's on a hill and has many different trails that lead to it. Once you're up there, you can already see pretty much all of Weinheim. On a clear day, you'll also be able to see Mannheim! You should definitely pay the €0,50 to go up the tower, because then you'll be able to get a 360° view. Sometimes, during summer and on the weekends, there will be a small kiosk open, that serves drinks, popsicles and light food (like pretzels), and sometimes the restaurant, which I highly recommend, is open too.
I've been on several birthday parties there, and it's also a great place for a wedding reception (I also appreciate seeing the fireworks from my house on these special occasions :) )!
Worth a visit for everyone!

Charming castle

Most castles in Germany are the same. Windeck castle is much smaller than most but unique in the fact it has been turned into a lovely bar with fantastic views of the city. Well worth the hike. Pity the entrance to the staircase leading all the way up the hill was not more obvious. We stumbled upon it by pure luck, google maps was not so helpful.

Overview of Weinheim
Jul 2017 • Solo
Very good choice if you want to have an overview of Weinheim and the surroundings. You can get there either by car or on foot. Go up to the highest Tower because from there you can see in all directions. Restaurant inside the Castle is also nice.

Good views of Weinheim and beyond. Go up the tower!

Windeck is a nice castle that underwent French remodeling in the 1600's using cannons. What is left is a nice restaurant inside, and a tower that in my opinion should be conquered. Steep steps, you might get a work out, but the breeze at the top, and the views, is worth it.

Castle ruin atop of Weinheim
Jul 2016 • Family
The “Windeck” is an old, mostly destroyed castle built in the early 12th century. It was meant to guard the town of Weinheim and surrounding properties. Its German name translates literally to “windy corner”. It was mostly destroyed by invading French troops in 1674 and never fully rebuilt. From the terrace you have very beautiful views of the city of Weinheim. There is a restaurant and an open-air beer garden during summer. All in all a very recommendable spot for a drink / coffee or a simple meal.
