Great views, but difficult hike
Aug 2019 • Solo
I am in very good shape and was gassed early on. I did make it all the way to the top, but struggled on the way down. Just be aware that the trail is very difficult. There is a lot of climbing of rocks that are loose. Be careful!

Great views come from a steep climb and workout
May 2018 • Solo
I've visited Anchorage multiple times and this was my first time hiking Bird Ridge. I wish I'd done it before!

Just about the entire trail is a workout. The first 1/2 miles is not so bad after that it keeps steeper and rocky. To be honest, I only made it to the bench (which I think is below the first false summit) which was installed in memory of a young man mauled by a black bear in June 2017 after a trail race.

I hiked this trail on a weekday in early May 2018. I hiked alone (and perhaps should not have done so). I did talk and sing to myself along the way to make noise and alert any bears of my approach. I do plan to hike this again on a future trip, but I'll try to do it with a group and take perhaps take bear spray.

This hike kicked my butt and wore me out but it was definitely worth it!

This is a south-facing trail so it is one of the first to become snow-free, though it can continue to be muddy and messy.

I concur on the suggestions to take plenty of water and snacks.
Visitors should plan to just take their time, enjoy the views and don't over
do it, pace yourself.

Beautiful Views- Muddy and snowy in May
May 2018 • Friends
We have hiked just about to the top of Bird Ridge twice now. It’s a great, very steep hike with amazing views of Turnagain Arm and the mountains. Lots of snow still in mid May and muddy towards the top. It is a very steep hike. You are going straight up a mountain but in my opinion the views are definitely worth it. We didn’t quite make it to the top because of the snow and mud. We had a few bald eagles flying around as we hiked. It’s a very popular trail so on a Saturday or most afternoons in the summer I would guess there will be other around hiking. We got stopped for a few minutes by a black bear last year on the same hike.

Be bear aware on this trail
Jun 2017 • Friends
Beautiful trail, one I visit often, but a young man was recently mauled and killed by a brown bear on this trail. This trail is well worth the visit but don't walk it alone and be sure to bring bear spray (and know how to use it) if you decide to hike it.

Unbelieveable Views - Worth the Hike!
May 2016 • Couples
This is a strenuous hike - Bring hiking poles if you have them and plenty of water (we took 64 oz between us and used it all), and food for the top, after the up taking in the views with lunch is a MUST! The hike is an out and back, peak is 3501' however my GPS showed 4500' of total gain and loss through the whole trip. It was a tough hike no doubt, but the views were amazing! We took 6.5 hrs including top time, breaks on the way up to enjoy the views and stop for pictures. Plus, we had the luxury of hiking through some remaining snow at the top - tons of fun! Saw quite a few bald eagles but beyond that there wasn't much wildlife out. Trail was slow in the morning, but as we ended around 3pm it was quite busy. It got HOT in the afternoon so if you are heading here this time of year I'd say get out and back early. That said, we hiked up without seeing more than a few people and spent 30+ minutes at the top without seeing a soul. Lots of off leash dogs that were very well behaved on the trail as well. $5 to park in the lot with a drop envelope. No water at the trailhead, there is a latrine about .25 mile in. I would give yourself 6-8 hours for this hike.

Your Awesome Hike with a View Begins Here!
Apr 2016 • Friends
The Bird Ridge trail has become one of the favorite spring hikes of folks who live in and around Anchorage. Because the ridge mostly faces south, it gets lots of sun and the trial usually dries out quickly in the Spring. This hike is not for the faint of heart or the weak of leg, however. With an elevation gain of about 3000 feet over 3 miles, it's pretty much uphill all the way from the parking lot. But for your work you will get some of the most awesome views of the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm to be had anywhere. And depending upon the time of year, you may find wildlife (bears or moose and lots of birds), wild flowers, and berries. It's a long hike to the summit, and there are several false summits, so take your time and stop to enjoy the view. Coming down will be faster, but be careful because going down is when most people get hurt.

A great place to see wild Alaska!
Sep 2014 • Couples
Stopped here three times on our trips from Anchorage to Seward and Portage Lake. Two of the times we saw awesome Alaskan wildlife! First we saw some beluga whales and as I was pointing them out to my wife I said look at the tall pine with the bald eagle on the top and the whales are right over him. On the third visit there was a gentleman there setting up a telescope, when he was done he showed us 3 black bears on the side of the mountain across the highway from the park and 17 mountain goats!

Great place to visit, Alaska is really awesome!

When you visit bring binoculars!!!
