After all those beautiful whales, cute sea otters and majestic eagles, the poor musk ox might seem to take a back seat. After all, cute is not the first word that comes to mind when you get your first look at this ancient animal. But after the 45 minute tour, provided by a highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable young guide, we... More

The young woman helping us was very friendly and obviously loved her work. We learnt all about the Musk Ox and his soft under hair as well as the history of the co-op. And she sis ask us first if we wanted to hear those explanations. The things they sell are all hand made and beautiful. And the gentleman helped... More

Assuming the products live up to their apparent qualities we will have bought gifts the recipients will be pleased with plus we can fel slightly smug about having supported local tradition

Learn everything about the Musk Ox and the co-operative of Alaskan Native Villages that contribute to the production of the Quiviut and the knitting of the beautiful Smokerings, hats, sweaters, and much more. Here you will be allowed to touch the Quiviut, but they don't sell the yarn here...they do sell the completed knitted products, however. Smokerings (cowls), and hats... More

Very small operation, with a small number of items on display. Free, interesting, and worth a couple of minutes. If you are in the market for a hand made native item, this is a good choice. These ladies make hats and so forth from musk ox wool. Prices were in the $100-200 range, but they have small samples for just... More

This wonderful shop was the only thing I had on my to do list when our cruise ship docked at Anchorage. I had read about the co-op, known about qiviut yarn and was more than ready to own one of the beautiful but oh so functional pieces. The young man was very helpful, explaining the process from start to finish,... More

We made a point to visit the co-op while in Anchorage. We were a little surprised that this is a working coop, but once inside, the personnel helped us out and explained how the musk ox wool is use to make various caps, scarves, etc. We were a little bit shocked whwen we asked about the cost of a coupole... We are happy you stopped in. The cost for the items is indeed because they are all hand knit out in the remote villages of Alaska. This and the fact that qiviut is one of the rarest fibers in the world. Torgeir Sales More

Beautiful handiwork and use of musk ox fur is a rare textile art. Very friendly greeting and all of my questions were answered with a smile. Be sure to touch the work-so soft! Wonderful ideas for gifts, just way outside my price range. Tiny place and an easy walk from the downtown area.

It is a small shop but you should take the time to stop by and see what native Alaskans (men and women) are making from the fur of the musk ox. They are very light weight and soft and represent the area in which they are made.
