Muddy
Sep 2020
It's a muddy port...not much to see. Near downtown Anchorage, so if you're in the area and interested, worth a quick stop.

Not much to do at the Wharf so go into the city centre
May 2019 • Couples
There wasn’t much at the port when our cruise ship docked - no passenger cruise terminal building with amenities or stores - just a working commercial wharf. Anchorage has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world (up to approx 12 metres) which was obvious upon returning to our cruise ship, as we could see more of the mudflats than earlier in the morning and the ship was down really low.

Beautiful place and fun place for easy hike

Look for Beluga Point. You can easily pull off the highway and hike on the rock/beach area. My kids had such fun we went back a second day for several hours. Beautiful to see and you don't have to worry about bears.

Port of Anchorage - See if you have nothing else to do
Apr 2017
A good view of the port and the horizon. The boardwalk made walking around easier. Note that Anchorage is a small town. So, life is slow, slow.

Please Do Not Change the Name
Sep 2017 • Friends
If you didn't know, the Port of Anchorage may be renamed to the Port of Alaska. It has a lot of aging infrastructure and thus may be a way to jump start improvements or so the administrators seem to think it needs to be renamed.

Please don't do this. Of course the Port provides the bulk (more than 50%) of goods entering from cargo ships to disperse across Alaska but this IS Anchorage.

YES! Improve it. Who knows if it could withstand another big quake. It is aging and in need of repair but surely the legislatures would earmark Federal and State funds instead of just City funds to repair it. The Port serves vital strategic importance for the country. Provides military shipments to enter Alaska and over 3.5 million tons of cargo.

They didn't have any Tours this summer but school groups are welcome to tour. You can view the Port while walking the Tony Knowles Trail.

Talk to your State and City leaders about keeping the name as is!!!

Such a busy place

Came in on our cruise ship to a part of Anchorage never sees. Lived her over 17 years and never saw the coming and goings of so many ships.

Could not get out a wander around due to all the security

I don't think there is anywhere in this city that you don't see natural beauty abound. The Port of Anchorage is another one of those places.

When you come to Alaska you will enjoy the beauty of nature! To get more about a city Anchorage is providing some tours and one of them is the Port tour. Tour was interesting and informative. Got information about shipping to Anchorage Which explain high prices in Alaska.

Where Industry and Nature Meets
May 2015
Years ago the city of Anchorage offered a tour of the port. So glad I went. The port is a secure location since 2011. Prior to that one could easily drive to the port. Now one would get arrested for trying.

However, one can get pretty close to the port, and if the road to Ship Creek is taken to the public boat launch, the port is easily seen to the right. There is parking here where a variety of ships navigating Cook Inlet and docking at the Port of Anchorage can be seen, not to mention any number of wild creatures from birds, to fish, to sea mammals.
