When doing research we found this company offered cheaper deals on bike rentals. They had plenty of bikes to choose from, but we wanted e-bikes to help with the 22 mile round trip bike ride and fortunately some were returned when we arrived. It was $42 for 3 hours, an extra hour was $4, then $3, etc. The young employees were really friendly and helpful with our rentals. They mapped out the route for us to drive along the Coastal Trail. Excellent customer service for such young employees! There are also plenty of restaurants within walking distance if you work up an appetite and souvenir shops if you feel like shopping. We ate at MyThai for lunch and Glacier Brewhouse for dinner. Both places were fantastic, although if you plan on eating at Glacier Brewhouse I recommend putting your name down early; there was a 2 hour wait for dinner but fortunately we snagged a table in the bar which offers the full menu (first-come, first-serve).

Rented a couple of e-bikes there (pedal-assist) and then rode the entire 24-mile coastal trail. Thoroughly enjoyed the day, with many great stops to take a breather. Staff was great and gave us a map of where to go, what to see and how not to get lost on the way back. The bikes acted a little strangely at times, seeming to have some sort of electronic braking that would slow you down much faster than normal when coasting. The rest of the time, though, the bikes made the ride a breeze. We called in to the shop and explained the issue and they offered to bring us some different bikes, but the issue was inconsistent enough not to merit that level of effort. When we got back to the shop a couple of hours later than expected, they only charged us for the lowest rental price as compensation for the oddity. Turns out it might have been an older battery style on a newer bike. Regardless, we really appreciated the great customer service. The only thing I would have appreciated more was a more comfortable seat. My rear is used to the gel seat I have on my mountain bike here at home. We didn't need reservations and you can't go wrong renting a bike from this place. Great location t start from, too, if you're planning to ride the coastal trail.

Downtown Bicycle Rental was amazing. They had a great selection of bikes and even have a small indoor test area that allowed us to try out a couple bikes until we found ones that were good for us. We ended up choosing e-bikes and Peter gave us great tutorials. Also, be sure to visit this shop first if you’re looking to hike Flattop Mountain. They have great tips for hiking it, and the best ways to get to and from there. (Coincidentally, Peter also runs the Flattop Mountain Shuttle from this location, but he’s knowledgeable about plenty of other transportation options.) If you decide to hike a more remote trail and want some bear spray, they rent it out at a cost that is MUCH cheaper than buying it.
Again, we couldn’t have been happier with our experience at Downtown Bicycle Rental. Peter gave us tips for everything we needed around town and even showed us how we could take the city bus from our hotel to the airport (instead of Uber) which saved us around 20 bucks. I recommend making Downtown Bicycle Rental one of your first stops while visiting Anchorage.

Peter's friendly & knowledgeable service at Downtown Bicycle Rentals was FANTASTIC! He properly fit all of us on our bikes, provided detailed information on the Coastal trail including an alternate return loop, gave us great suggestions on what to bring or leave at this shop, provided complementary water, took a nice family picture and even gave us tips on a hiking trail! The bikes were in good condition, the price was very reasonable, location of the bike shop was great (close to the Coastal trail) and the service was fast, efficient and exceptional. My 3 teenage boys and I rode the entire Coastal Trail including the fun alternative loop (~25 miles) Peter described and we had a blast. We even saw a moose! This was our highlight of Anchorage. I highly recommend you rent from here - Peter's service is worth it!

Austin helped out my multi-generational family of 7 pick out suitable bikes to ride the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail on our first day in Anchorage. He was nothing but pleasant while fitting us to bikes and teaching us about the trail. My grandparents used the electric bikes which were perfect and required a very small amount of effort to ride the 22 miles. The rest of us rode the normal hybrid bikes. We felt the burn in our legs, but it was nothing we couldn't handle and we loved the workout. A couple of the bikes were finicky with the gears, but did the job well. We saw a bull moose walking on the trail, adding some time to our travels. We got back to the shop after 3.5 hours, and they didn't even consider charging us extra for coming back outside the 3 hour rental. Would definitely recommend them to anyone doing this trail!

We had a large group (23) that needed bikes before the store opened. Peter came in early and outfitted all of us we bikes that were in excellent condition. He gave us all the info we needed about the trail. He answered all of our questions. The entire experience for all 23 of us was excellent. I would definitely rent bikes from here again, and I highly recommend them for both the quality of bikes and their customer service.

Downtown Bicycle’s staff and owner were incredibly helpful with more than fair prices for rentals. We rented two bikes to ride down to the Alaska Zoo (about 30 mile round trip) and they helped us plan our routes and pointed out spots along the way that we would have most likely missed. Would definitely rent again!

My wife and I came to Alaska for two weeks in mid-March 2023 for our wedding anniversary. We visited Anchorage and Fairbanks. While in Anchorage we visited the Downtown Bicycle Rental business and were glad we did! The owner, Pete, went to great lengths to ensure that my wife and I were taken care of with our electric bike rental. We got a very fulfilling half-day bike excursion on the Tony Knowles trail. Thanks again Downtown Bicycle Rental!!

Glad I end up here! I initially overlooked this company as it was a couple blocks away from the bike path I planned on. Two companies I was looking at had no bikes available when I decided to go, so I tried here. Mostly younger staff but all were friendly and helpful. Most important was the pleasant surprise that Downtown Bicycle was less expensive than the others. 20-40% less expensive! (assuming my math is correct)

From the moment we walked in we were treated with respect and attention. We were fitted with 2E bikes so that we could do the coastal tour without having to worry about being exhausted from the hills. Helmets were included. The price was $42 for three hours and we ended up running late and they did not charge us. The workers were knowledgeable and kind and polite and still in high school! They gave us a lot of advice about where to go and what to expect. And they even threw in a bike tote for us to put our water bottles in.
