When I took young students they allowed those that were nervous to meet the zombie ahead of time so they could see he was just an actor. That really helped them not be scared.

Perfect for that age group and yes adult-help would definitely come in handy (although the person who ran our game, Dave, was good about making sure we had "hints" when needed), but I recommend you join in the fun.
