The building isn't fancy from the outside, but inside it's a soaring space filled with light. The Flentrop organ has a gorgeous tone. For a truly sublime experience, visit Sunday night for the Compline (pronounced com-plin), a chanted service.

Last time I was in Italy, while viewing a grim, ferro-cement ruin from WWII, I learned about an architectural genre called "Fascist Brutalism". Imagine my surprise to discover that this genre is alive and well in Seattle. St Marks is a Seattle landmark because it occupies a prominent spot overlooking I-5, but up close the building is an ugly, concrete monstrosity. Chunks of concrete have fallen away, revealing rebar, giving the appearance of having been strafed. It does have a dystopian air, which might appeal to some people. Even the parking lot, which should have a terrific view of Seattle, is surrounded by trees which obscure the view.

I am not ashamed to say that I planned my entire inaugural visit to Seattle around this Cathedral and their Compline Choir. I have been listening to their podcast for several years now, and I vowed to make it up to the Cathedral were I ever in Seattle on a Sunday evening. The Cathedral itself has a very interesting history, and the Compline Choir has been singing the Compline service since the 1950s! The acoustics in this Cathedral are sublime and the cathedral organ has an amazing tone! The staff and the regular compline attendees were all extremely friendly and welcoming. Visiting this Cathedral and being able to enjoy the Compline Choir was the highlight of my visit to Seattle.

I reviewed St Mark's Cathedral a couple of years ago and panned it for being ugly, describing it using the architectural genre called "Facist Brutalism". I probably flatter myself to assume that my review motivated the church authorities to undertake a make-over of the facade, but that is exactly what they are doing. The broken concrete exterior is being refaced with stone. The improvement is significant, although the building remains a big, square pillbox of a church. The interior is functional and I'm told the acoustics are quite good. The church fulfills it humanitarian obligations by housing homeless women overnight.

This is the location of the annual Seattle Choral Company Christmas concert. The acoustics are perfect for the music. The organ is amazing! The interior has recently been renovated and looks good. The parking lot still needs repair- it is pretty rough.

Attended the Saturday evening performance with my family. Acoustics are awesome with rich sounds throughout the church. The choir was close to perfect but the chosen songs were dreary and almost sad. Was expecting something far more upbeat but perhaps I just didn't understand the program, nor of course any of the words since I believe it was done in latin.

Pick as a stop after your visit to Volunteer Park. It serves as a good break sitting in the cathedral when there is no service. After that, walk along Broadway to find a cafeteria / restaurant.

I appreciate the high quality of music and liturgy. The design inside is very unique, not typical of a church this size, but it works well. The Sunday I was there, there was an African -American priest and his message with exceptional. This is the second time I've visited this church, and look forward to the next.

The Episcopal Cathedral fo St. Mark's in Seattle is a huge block structure - formed from concrete and partially faced with brick. The interior space is large and plain/simple. Acoustics are marvelous, and the organ is splendid. Staff, clergy and congregants are all friendly and helpful, and most quite knowledgeable regarding the history of this building.

I'm not sure what the reviewer was thinking who wrote the Ugliest Church but from my photo I think you will think quite the opposite. For I found it quite beautiful and refreshing and the gift store the same. I look forward to coming back to going to one of the services here.
