This is a very trendy area with some upscale apartments and lots of dining options. It is convenient to Pike Market and the Space Needle. But, there are a lot of panhandlers and homeless in the neighborhood but this is a problem for most of Seattle.

We stayed in the middle of Belltown for a week of rest and recuperation. The area is very tourist and traveller friendly. Belltown has an abundance of accommodations. With this wide range of choice there is the wide range of cost. We chose Airbnb and were able to select one of their many options. Belltown has numerous interesting and fairly priced restaurants, pubs and dining establishments. We had a great Italian supper and an equally satisfying Moroccan meal. There is a wide range of ethnic choices as well as the more traditional options. There is not a large presence of fast food options, which I found to be a refreshing change. Belltowns location allows for a modest walk or super short bus ride to Pike Market, city piers, tourist attractions and Seattle's city centre. Also of note, Belltown allows one to easily walk or ride the opposite direction from downtown and quickly arrive at Seattle Centre, the location of the Space Needle and the Chihuly Garden and Glass Centre. Again there are many interesting coffee shops and eating establishments. Belltown has a small, homeless, street people population who tend to congregate in small areas on some of the avenues but at no time did I feel particularly uncomfortable or ill at ease. Belltown is better than a swell option when on decides to visit central Seattle. It's superior.

Our first time staying in Belltown. How fun an refreshing. Close to everything and such personality here. Met some locals at the dog park and wandered the neighborhood. There are some lost souls wandering the street but it always felt safe. We are making this our spot to stay when visiting Seattle.

Due to it's proximity to the Pike Place Market, waterfront cruise ship terminal, and Olympic Sculpture Garden, its likely Seattle visitors will make their way through Belltown. They will find a somewhat ordinary neighborhood of older low brick buildings and nondescript high-rise condos. Long a nexus for social service agencies, Belltown is Seattle's dumping ground for the mentally ill and drug impaired. The glut of nightclubs have forced out many of the legendary restaurants and morphed the night scene into throngs of drunken 20-somethings.
So, if it's all so bad, why have I lived in Belltown for 25 years? Its proximity to the Pike Place Market, waterfront and Olympic Sculpture Garden are a start. Knockout views of Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains. Pockets of interesting shops and restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Boutiques for the shopping fans - The Endless Knot, Baby and Company, Vain, etc. are worth the walk during the day. Restaurants like Local 360, Spur, The Coterie Room, and others buck the drunken-Belltown trend and are worth seeking out at night.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the neighborhood boundaries are not First Avenue, Virginia Street to Broad Street as describe above. The true boundaries are 1st to 4th Avenues, between Bell Street and Denny Way. I mention this because there are shops, cafes, etc, on 2nd, 3rd and 4th worth checking out as well.
As neighborhoods go, Lower and Upper Queen Anne to the North, Pike/Pine/Capitol Hill to the East, and Pioneer Square/Chinatown to the South are far more interesting than Belltown; however, since you are likely to find yourself in Belltown, make the most of it by finding interest in the small things.

Belltown sits right on the edge of downtown, right next to the Seattle Center and has Elliott Bay to it's West. It is the home to lots of restaurants, bars and clubs. The farther you get front the downtown center, they get a little shadier, but Belltown is usually hopping with activity. This where downtowners meet after work.
The are plenty of apartments, and condos. including the high rise that one of our favorite mystery fiction detective, J.P. Beaumont, lives in.

Lots of great restaurants in the neighborhood, but some shady looking characters as well. I think Belltown is trying to find it's way, turning from a vagrant neighborhood to one of condos and fashionable people. If you go, be sure you have a destination, and after dark take a cab.

My husband and I visited Seattle in September and stayed an air n b in Belltown. It was a great choice to stay in that area. It was close to everything that we wanted to see. We walked to Pikes Market. It was a short drive to the Space Needle. There were restaurants, bakeries and shops all around! Only problem was that it did rain one whole day but we were still able to get out and about. Loved the area!

This is another nice area to visit during the daylight, with little up and coming unqiue shops, restaurants and alike to stroll through. However, if you come through after dark, there is a real homeless problem. Most of them leave you alone around the city, but I am a bigger guy walking by myself. I do not know that I would be comfortable as a female in some of these areas. Maybe if you are in a group of friends it would be better.
All the same, it is worth checking out if the numbers or day light is in your favor.

Restaurants come and go all over the city and Belltown is no exception. Belltown is very different from what it was 2 years ago let alone 20 years ago. It is still worth the visit and if you are visiting Seattle you might choose to base yourself in the neighborhood as it is easy to access many of the highlights of Seattle that are located in downtown.

Stayed at an Airbnb while here and Loved the vibe of this neighborhood, maybe due to my passion for the 80's and 90's music scene that remains here. Close enough to walk about anywhere downtown. Lots of different coffee shops, artwork, clubs, plenty of bars and interesting people. Gooo Seahawks!!!
