Pioneers first settled at Green Lake in the 1860’s, and the area was annexed into Seattle in 1891. The water level was lowered in 1911 to form more park space, cutting off the water inflow and outflow routes. Now it is fed only by rain water and Seattle’s water supply. There is also a constant battle to keep the native algae from taking over (hence the name of the lake, by the way). Because of its close proximity to downtown Seattle and the great number of things to do there, Green Lake is a highly popular neighborhood. Green Lake is the locals’ favorite lake without question. If you are looking to meet locals - just go for a walk at Green Lake and strike up a conversation with anyone who strikes your fancy. The “Seattle Freeze” usually thaws out during the Summer.

The park and lake are gorgeous and there are a number of places to have a seat and enjoy the view. It is close proximity to the Woodland Park Zoo so that is convenient. The area has some small restaurants that bring life to the storefronts. However, when you're walking/jogging up to it, you're taken aback because there are a plethora of homeless camps that almost circle the park. The camps are a mix of tents and broken down RV's that folks are living out of. This was very off putting as the neighborhood boasts condos/homes with values well into the low millions. No one bothered or disturbed us, but it was a bit unnerving as you have to walk through/past the large camp and walk under an underpass across a generally busy road. I still rank the park as excellent because it was not in disrepair, it was vibrant, it was beautiful.

I have friends that live within walking distance of the park, so I have been there many times. There is a nice walking path around the lake which doesn't take long to complete. There is always some activity going on at the park that everyone would fine interesting. Dogs are welcome.

We stayed across the street from the park. It was a family trip so the park offered multiple opportunities for us : Running paths, shady area for leisurely strolling, and a children's park. It is a beautiful park.

You can run, bike or walk around Green Lake. We prefer to take a leisurely walk and observe folks enjoying themselves: families, young couples, or old folks. This time we walked to commemorate a family member who could not join us this time. Loved the weather - the raindrops definitely found us; the highlight was to see real waves!

A lake with plenty of algae, a park with too many idiots, and walkers, bikers, and runners who have no respect for each other. Oh, did I mention the sunbathers who are obese and wearing bikinis?

Every big city has a large park - and in Seattle - this has to be the best!!
Make sure to go here at some point during each season, and at different times of the day. It takes on so many different vibes and looks!
Love the roughly 3 mile walk around the Lake - so much to see at any time and great for people watching of all kinds. We absolutely love coming here just to soak it all in, relax, and enjoy life. There are such a number of different venues around the Lake, for sunning, picnicking, playing basketball, kayaking, renting paddle boats, softball and soccer fields, and even a small little golf course at the south end. They even hold rowing races on the Lake! And then - so many great eateries within blocks of the Lake - and so much to explore! There are events held here all the time. You could come here every day and see & do something different! It is Seattle's NYC Central Park (albeit on a smaller scale)
If you are visiting from out of town, don't miss this wonderful park!

We love Green Lake! It's great to walk around, swim in, and bike! There's are also a lot of great restaurants and ice cream shops around the lake if you get hungry.
