Pioneers first settled at Green Lake in the 1860’s, and the area was annexed into Seattle in 1891. The water level was lowered in 1911 to form more park space, cutting off the water inflow and outflow routes. Now it is fed only by rain water and Seattle’s water supply. There is also a constant battle to keep the native algae from taking over (hence the name of the lake, by the way). Because of its close proximity to downtown Seattle and the great number of things to do there, Green Lake is a highly popular neighborhood. Green Lake is the locals’ favorite lake without question. If you are looking to meet locals - just go for a walk at Green Lake and strike up a conversation with anyone who strikes your fancy. The “Seattle Freeze” usually thaws out during the Summer.

Every big city has a large park - and in Seattle - this has to be the best!! Make sure to go here at some point during each season, and at different times of the day. It takes on so many different vibes and looks! Love the roughly 3 mile walk around the Lake - so much to see at any time and great for people watching of all kinds. We absolutely love coming here just to soak it all in, relax, and enjoy life. There are such a number of different venues around the Lake, for sunning, picnicking, playing basketball, kayaking, renting paddle boats, softball and soccer fields, and even a small little golf course at the south end. They even hold rowing races on the Lake! And then - so many great eateries within blocks of the Lake - and so much to explore! There are events held here all the time. You could come here every day and see & do something different! It is Seattle's NYC Central Park (albeit on a smaller scale) If you are visiting from out of town, don't miss this wonderful park!

This makes for a nice, easy walk for single people, couples, dogs, and larger groups. Flat, disabled-friendly. And there are some terrific restaurants nearby. A very mellow way to do a Sunday in reasonable weather.
