Beautiful popular beach with 0.5 miles of beachfront viewing the Olympic mountains to the West and Seattle to the East. Arriving at the nip of down tide the waves lapped upon the walls until the lower tides left behind rows of algae. The paved boardwalk runs parallel to the beach and has chairs to get a good gander at the beach, marine life, walkers, skateboarders, bikers, boaters, dogs and a lone swimmer! The people were friendly and easy to strike up conversations – no large crowds but most people were in groups of two with some wearing masks. I wanted to get a glimpse of a whale but the otters, sea lions and seagulls stole the show. Parking was free with a bike lane to the right of the vehicle. No public restroom available and the various merchants keep them handy for their customers.

We viewed the sundown here. We were also able to few the night lights of Seattle to the east. The government closes the beach promptly at sundown. Many merchants also restrict access to restrooms (Go before you go, just like your mother told you). The crowd worked well to social distance.

We had only one day in Seattle, so our friend took us out to a beach! Alki beach is about a 30 minute drive from the airport. It was a warm sunny day but water too cold to go in. We ate lunch at a nearby restaurant. There are plenty of choices!

We enjoyed a small group walk after lunch at Cactus. Alki is one of my favorite beaches. The view of downtown Seattle is spectacular and the beach is a nice sandy beach. There are lots of great restaurants in the area.

This beach was easily accessible for us as we were staying in West Seattle and only had to walk, although it was a steep decent to the beach and then a steep climb after! Despite it being winter, there were still a number of people out, and even quite a few playing volleyball at the public volleyball nets. The path behind the beach offers good space for walking and cycling/skating and is lined by lots of little shops and eateries; we stopped at Starbucks for a coffee and a rest. At the southern end of the beach there is a lighthouse which is worth walking to, although it isn't that impressive. The views in general from the beach are quite nice and I would definitely like to return in the summer if I can.
