- Tina CMelbourne Beach, Florida444 contributionsDon't miss this spot in Skagway! We stopped in for a beer and snack after our train tour and found this spot to be fun. There were not many places open (late season) but no need to look elsewhere. Our server, dressed in full salon girl garb, recommended a couple of different beers and we added the chips, salsa and guacamole for a snack. What a pleasant surprise! They were better than most Mexican restaurants I've been to. And despite the crowd, our server kept coming back frequently to check on us and get us another beer. I loved the cool look of the place and wish we had gotten there early enough for a brothel tour.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 25, 2023
- Dimitris LSydney, Australia50,924 contributionsA fascinating insight into the past! The historic Red Onion Saloon is quite a favorite place to visit. It was built in 1897 during the height of the Gold Rush and operated as one of the finest Bordellos in town. Today it’s a restaurant and a brothel museum offering a fascinating insight into the past! The staff dress up as “working girls” from the period, serving food, drinks and offering tours. Worth a visit.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 3, 2023
- united01Nassington, United Kingdom230 contributionsGreat fun!We had an amazing escorted tour of the town and a humorous history lesson on the historical working class brothel scene presented to us by Trixie. She was a really good communicator who held our attention. We later visited the Saloon and viewed the museum as well as enjoyed a drink in an atmospheric fun environment.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 7, 2023
- Judith SAberdare, United Kingdom20 contributionsFascinating InsightfulVery interesting informative tour, about what went on “upstairs” in The Red Onion Saloon, facilitated by the very knowledgeable Madame Tilly. She was knowledgeable , funny but also sensitive to the situation of the working women of the time. A visit that we would definitely recommend.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 30, 2024
- Angela F1 contributionBrothel Tour Memorable thanks to Shirley Woods Energy!!!The tour guide “Shirley Wood” was amazing!!! She made you actually feel like you were back in the gold rush era and can empathize what the working girls from the brothel had to endure…she had incredible energy and made the walking tour experience pleasurably memorable. I recommend this tour and if at all possible make sure you request Shirley!!! She made it so enjoyable!!!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 2, 2024
- Diane MWhitby, Canada63 contributionsInteresting historyThe saloon was a fascinating place to see. Even if you just have a drink there is a lot of history on the walls. The staff all play their part to historically represent the Gold Rush times. I particularly enjoyed the tour that provided insight into a history of brothels at the time. They did a wonderful job preserving the past and sharing many fascinating stories about the women who once lived here. Despite the intense hardships that they faced some of them found a way to be entrepreneurs and leaders in their communities. I would highly recommend it.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 7, 2024
- dadesmond4 contributionsBecoming a lady of the nightBe prepared for fun. I went with Madam Belle Daball and she has some great energy. They tell you a lot about the history of the town that's both good and bad. It is the only woman owned and ran business and I would go back and do it in a heart beat. You are walking through town and be prepared to become a lady of the night by the end.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 24, 2024
- Kate KDeerfield, New Hampshire14 contributionsThe Red Onion is the place for brothel tours, walking tours and yummy food. Don't miss it if you are in Skagway! This place is awesome! The food is fabulous, but the tour of the brothel is not to be missed! In fact, if you have time, book one of their 2-hour walking tours. You will see the town of Skagway Alaska as it was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The guides are funny, sassy, helpful and so knowledgeable. I can't recommend it enough! Special shoutout to Madam Wilma Loveall - she answered all our questions and told some really touching tales of the women of the west (and the men too). Loved it!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 2, 2024
- Genny B2 contributionsIf you do one thing in Skagway, do this!I was most looking forward to going on the Brothel Museum Tour while I was in Skagway, and it did not disappoint. It was fascinating to see what a brothel looked like and how it operated 125 years ago. And our tour guide was knowledgeable, funny, and engaging. The best 20 minutes you will spend in Skagway--at least in public.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024

Honestly the best tour I’ve ever had. I learned so much, and it was such an impactful history lesson. Our madame (rosie peaks) was such an expert storyteller, and also hit home so many important facts about the history and its importance even in 2022. I recommend for anyone to spend many dollars here to support the business and learn a little in a fun way!

What an outstanding experience! This is probably the most entertaining, thoughtful, engaging, and inspiring walking tours I’ve ever been on. Madame Rosie Peaks was so amazing. My husband and I booked through the saloon since it wasn’t a tour offered on our cruise ship and we were able to meet our Madame on shore very easily. From there the tour started. We stopped at several locations throughout Skagway and heard many interesting stories of the women who helped to build the town. Madame Rosie Peaks was an excellent story teller at every stop and incredibly engaging even between stops. The last stop was at the brothel, which was very interesting as well. I’d recommend this tour to anyone visiting Skagway. We had so much fun.

This was a fun experience. All the guides are dressed up as salon / working girls and stay mostly in character for the 20/25 minute tour to the upstairs rooms above the bar. Lots of great stories and interesting information and artifacts Made you appreciative how tough the women had to be and what they had to endure. Bit pricey at 10 USD for a short tour but we felt it was worth it.

Madam Trixie Turner was fantastic! I highly recommend taking this tour and if you are lucky enough to get Trixie, it is a guaranteed hoot of a time! The tour is very tongue in cheek filled with puns funny - but also filled with a lot of interesting historical facts. You see a lot of original artifacts from the 1898 Gold Rush - including part of the building you are touring- and Trixie keeps it lively and entertaining. We enjoyed the Breakfast tour. A good selection of drinks and good, filling breakfast were included. Add this to your must do list.

Rosie is fabulous! I accidentally wondered in the museum area upstairs and found Rosie, loving and kind, she talked to me about the history of the brothel and urged me to stick around for the tour. I am glad I did. I won't give too much away, but the rooms upstairs showcase the amazing and tragic lives of the women who brought comfort to so many men. The silk walls decorating each room were like curtains to the windows of the past. I highly recommend grabbing a drink at the saloon and heading upstairs for some fun with Rosie and the gang.

A friend and I booked this last minute through our cruise ship and were so glad we did. Of all the excursions we booked, this was the least expensive and my favorite, hands down. The guide was in character during the tour and provided great historical perspective, with a personal touch (she was born/raised in Alaska and had a few family stories that tied in) and a bit of humor when appropriate. You could tell how passionate the guide was in telling the stories of these women. I found the tour to be so interesting and didn't want it to end! I 100% recommend it--you won't be disappointed!

We had a fantastic experience. Learn all about Skagway and it's incredibly rich history from the viewpoint of the ladies (and unfortunately, girls) who afforded affection for a price. It was a highly educational, informative and entertaining tour of the town in a small group. We learned more about the Alaskan gold rush of the late 1890s than from any other source. Our personal Madam tour guide was in costume and in character from the first moment we met, keeping us laughing to the end but also raising important social issues of the day that persist to today. Funny, polished, professional, educational and thought provoking. Do not visit Skagway without taking this "Ghosts and Good Time Girls" walking tour. You will not be disappointed. A very special shout out and our sincere appreciation to Madam Rosie Peaks for a memorable morning.

My wife and I did the Ghost and Goodtime Girls Walking Tour through the Red Onion Saloon from a cruise that we took to Alaska. We had Madam Trixie Turner as our guide, and she was very funny and extremely knowledgeable of the history in the area. She took us around Skagway, telling us stories about how life was for folks (including working women) in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, and the tour ended with a walk through of the museum upstairs in the Red Onion Saloon, which actually houses an impressive selection of preserved items from when the saloon was a brothel. I appreciated the stories about women from that time that Madam Trixie shared with our group. It is apparent that she is passionate about her work in theatre and keeping the stories of these women alive. I would definitely recommend this tour to other travelers!

Many said this was a must see. I agree. The walk around Skagway, led by Amanda Mount, (one of the Red Onion "girls"] was entertaining and full of historic value. She actually had us strolling with our arms waving and backsides swaying crossing streets, much to the delight of passersby and locals. The tour of the brothel upstairs was eye opening into what went on and how the women were treated. Lots of real relics of a bygone era brought it to life. To say the atmosphere of the saloon was eclectic, is an understatement. I didn't count, but I had no idea there were so many styles of bed pans. They line the wall just below the ceiling. Oh the food, drinks and service were above average. Nachos were real good. Try a Duck Fart. You'll love it

My family missed out on booking the train tour...so we thought what the heck, we got nothing better to do for the day. Let me tell you this tour was one of the absolute best parts of our trip. Our madame, Madame May Dooya was not only very knowledgeable about the crazy history that happened in this little boom town, but was very quick witted and incredibly entertaining. She had us shimmying, shaking and laughing for a good two hours.

We will be doing the Railway tour in Sept. 2017. Would we have time to also do the Saloon tour? What is the distance between the 2 and is transportation available.

No
The train ride I hear takes most of your time and there was a long line to enter and site even for a beer.

Looking at doing a tour of the Brothel. What is the cost for this? We will be on a Norwegien cruise. Can you also tell me about how long the tour lasts? Thank you.
Written February 6, 2016
Book this off the ship as it's very much cheaper at $10 for the talk at the saloon. There is another outside tour of the red light district as it was then. Not sure of the price here possibly $20 but definitely cheaper than booking on board. That goes for all the trips, booking offices are on the quay everywhere you stop.

Just go to the Red Onion and find out when the next tour is....they start about noon. They meet you and you pay ($10 ) on the ground floor and the tour is upstairs in what is left of the brothel. I was on the noon tour with only two others. Great fun. You get a souvenir that is probably worth the $10 and the chance to meet Lydia-resident ghost. Downstairs they are serving food and drink. Tour lasts less than an hour and the tour guide I had was wonderful.

Hi! I would like to know at what time they open for Brothel Museum tours as we'll be going on a cruise, but the only tour our cruise offers also includes a lot of other attractions and travel time, so we would like to go on our own early just to the Red Onion Saloon. Thank you. Our cruise is in early July so a prompt reply will be appreciated. Thank you.

The saloon is open 10am-10pm. We've been a few times and always saw tours going on. Their website is: redonion1898 . com You could always send an email to them to ask specific questions. Have fun!

Hello, we are traveling with Princess Cruise line and will be arriving in Skagway June 10th 2015. We really would like to take the Bridge, Brothel and Brew tour rather than their excursion breakfast and summit tour, as we will be having breakfast on the ship. Do you recommend any travel groups that could assist us with booking this tour as we like the idea of staying at the Red onion for additional brews.
Thanks for your response
Mike
