This was our first stop off the boat. We grabbed Junior Ranger booklets and then watched the park film. The film really gives a great overview of the area and the history of the gold rush in Alaska. Our kids were able to complete the booklet fairly easily after watching and were awarded their badges. The park also includes many historic buildings throughout town and a cabin which was closed when we went to view it. It didn’t take a lot of time to visit but definitely made our visit to Skagway more enjoyable.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 8, 2023

The rangers are knowledgeable, professional, and cheerful. They show an excellent free video; have free maps and brochures; can advise on things to see and do; and there is a small museum adjacent.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 2, 2024

The center is within easy reach from the cruise ships and at the end of the main strip in Skagway. This visitor center provides a great overview of the Gold Rush that shaped Skagway and Alaska and inspired many such as Jack London or Charlie Chaplin. You can watch a short movie, or wander around the small but well put together exhibits. A separate building include a small trail information center where we were advised on short nature hikes.

If you’re in Skagway you should swing by this National Park Service sight To learn about the incredible challenges that thousands of people faced during the 1890s gold rush.
It was a hard life, the they faced included the weather, terrain, distances and each other. The NPS put together a compelling story about a period of history most people, including myself, know little about. This includes the thousands of horses, donkeys and miles that died.

The museum was small but cool. My biggest problem with this was the theater. I really wanted to see the film but it was only shown on the hour from 10-4. Both times I tried the theater was already packed. I understand that they probably can't expand the size of the theater but having more frequent showings (every half hour or showing the film continuously) would allow more to enjoy it given the number of visitors to Skagway every day. Or have the film available online. I also didn't realize they had a bookstore because it's across the street and by the time I figured it out it was also closed. I had extra hours in Skagway and was bummed I couldn't use them to see more of this.

We visited Skagway over the 4th of July this past week and stopped in to see visit the Klondike Gold Rush visitors center. The staff were extremely welcoming and ready to answer all our questions about the gold rush history. It’s a must stop.

Located in several nicely restored buildings in Skagway, this National park is very well done and provides a great deal of information free to the public. The rangers were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend spending some time here to learn the real history of the Klondike.

The visitor center is one of the first stops when walking into town from the cruise ship dock, which is the perfect introduction to Skagway! Skagway’s history is rooted in the gold rush - learning about the gold rush is important to understanding Skagway. The visitor center offers a short, free (20 minute?) film describing this history that was a highlight of our visit to Skagway and a great first stop.

Great overview of the Klondike Gold Rush town. The Park Service Rangers were very informative and helpful. Make sure that you get the Park Service Passport and get it stamped here, at Glacier Bay and at Denali Park. Great memory of your visit to Alaska.

If I am ending my sea cruise in Seward and starting a land tour, do you get transported? Do you have to cart your luggage with you as well?
Written September 19, 2019
Sorry didn’t take the cruise but the people on Holland America that we’re there were flown in from Fairbanks to Dawson City and then transported on a bus around Dawson and the down to Whitehorse and Skagway

What other free activities are within walking distance of the cruise docking area?
Thank you everyone!
Written September 19, 2019
Almost everything is within walking distance, although you will probably want to take the city shuttle (small cost). Almost everything is 'downtown' except the Jewel Garden and you will need the shuttle for that.

If I am coming off a Celebrity cruise ship, how do I get to the visitors center?
Written September 19, 2019
Walk North, Young Man! It is about a 1/3 of a mile distance. Entire town is 21 blocks long and five blocks wide. Easy to navigate. Or take a city shuttle bus for a nominal fee.

How do you book? How long is it? How far away is it from the Cruise ship?
Written April 3, 2018
You can book on the website. This is the same process as booking a campsite

I would like to know how to get to the park visitors center from the cruise terminal and what time walking tours of the National Hisotirc Park start.
Written July 14, 2015
It is an easy walk from cruise ships into town. The Kolondike Gold Rush NP Center is on 2nd and Brroadway. Walking tours in Skagway start at 9, 10, and 11 am, as well as, 2 and 3 pm. Tickets (free) are available at the Visitor center, but you have to have one as they limit the number of participants to 30. You may also take a cab/transport out to Dyea, about 9 miles away from Skagway to tour the townsite (where gold miners started the Chilkoot Trail on their way to Dawson City, Yukon Territory) and a Gold Rush era cemetery. The drive is beautiful! Check out the NP website for more information.
Make sure to watch the film at visitor center too, a great way to give you a historical overview before exploring the area!
