About
TOUR INCLUDES: All-you-can-eat fire grilled salmon and accompanying menu items, access to Liarsville historic exhibits, live melodrama and entertainment, gold panning and all the gold you discover. Round-trip transfer from cruise ship dock. FULL DESCRIPTION: At the foot of the White Pass, nestled beside a waterfall, discover Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp and Salmon Bake, so named for the journalists dispatched to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush who fabricated tall-tales from this very location. Your Liarsville experience begins with an all-you-can-eat alfresco feast in the forest that includes WILD Alaskan-caught salmon freshly grilled over an alder wood fire, Chilkoot Chicken, Panners Pasta, Liarsville Rice Medley, Prospector Pete's Reindeer Beans, Sluice Box Slaw and other fresh salads, cornbread, coffee, lemonade, and blueberry cake for dessert. Beer and wine are available for purchase. After your meal, mosey on over to our gold rush era trail camp. Here, you'll enjoy the waterfall and the authentic exhibits of Liarsville. Browse for souvenirs in the Fancy Goods Gift Shop. In the Hippodrome a cast of sourdoughs and dance hall girls will entertain you with a hilarious melodrama and a poem by the "Bard of the North," Robert Service. You'll be taught the art of gold panning, then be set free in the Liarsville gold fields, where you are guaranteed to find that precious metal that drove men and women wild with gold fever! You are guaranteed to find gold in every pan! Once you've made your fortune, take time to wander through the camp and visit the Fancy Goods store, bordello and laundry tents to view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind by the miners and ladies of the evening. Help yourself to complimentary cookies and apple cider and have your picture taken with one of the dance hall girls or the camp's lovable mascot, an Alaskan malamute named Dolly.

For me it was a waste of time. Salmon Bake was nothing spectacular, show was hokey and then the tour bus driver was confused and had to call another bus to take us back to the shop.
My recommendation is choose a different tour.

Do not book this tour with Norwegian Cruise Lines. We were given a grand total of 40 minutes to stand in a very long line, get dried out salmon and some sides, and listen to a guy play a guitar. We had maybe 10 mins to eat, no time to explore the "town," there was no show, and essentially paid $79 each for some delicious blueberry cake (it was really good, but not that good). The "tour" was completely oversold and poorly handled. Our driver was even worse. No tour, no stories, no history... I still don't even know why the place is called "Liarsville."
I tried to resolve this with NCL excursions on the ship, and not only did they not do anything to compensate me and my family of 8, but they also ignored my concerns. Not a single "I'm sorry the tour didn't meet your expectations" or anything other than continuing to do other tasks while refusing to even make eye contact with me.
Save your money. The White Pass railroad was spectacular.

This was included in our tour arranged by the ship as a way to spreadout all of the guests so that not everyone is waiting at the same activities.
This is an interesting camp to visit. The actors are in period costumes and do play the parts well (ladies and gents).
There is panning for gold - which is more interesting than it sounds.
The meal is fantastic. The chef was very engaging, loves what he does, and it shows in his food and interactions with guests.
A must do when in Skagway.

You see a recreation of a gold rush camp and learn the history of how this place got its name, partially through a fun skit some actors put on. We brought home some specks of gold we got from panning. There was also a good salmon bake. The food was good.

Liarsville was one of the stop on a group tour we booked while in port. It was cute. Lots of people dressed up and acting like they were in a Klondike Camp. The one lady differently was over dramatic but it was really fun to walk around. Still very entertaining. We were mostly there to go golf panning but there was many other things you can do here as well. It was really fun to gold pan, kids would love it but as adults we did as well. Everyone seems to go home with a few gold flakes.

We booked this as part of a Holland America cruise excursion, and it was just okay. The actors do play their parts well, and the history of the area is interesting. The meal was average, and the gold panning was worth skipping. Overall, I wouldn't do it again.

The menu here is exactly the same as the salmon bake in Juneau. It was raining the night we visited, no cover to speak of. Food was good. Show was in another area. Recreation of a gold miners camp looked authentic but didn’t spend much time there because of the rain. We opted to sit around one of the fire pits instead of attending the show. One of the employees tried very hard to get a fire started with wet wood; finally a couple of the tourists bought some dry wood. I imagine the group behind us had a great fire to sit beside. Good experience, rain interfered, but still had a fun time. Always nice people to meet.

Total waste of money. 15min trip on a battered old school bus on which we were told by the driver to get the salmon bake first. Only then to arrive 5mins before the end of the show, there not being another until after our bus left. Left dockside 12:45 and arrived back at 2:20. The guy cooking salmon didn't ever put enough fillets on the griddle so the queue for food took over 20mins. I complained and was pretty much told 'tough luck'. Save your money and avoid this trip is my best advice.

Most of the high starred reviews are botted. Do not believe any of them. Also, the “feast” they provided was canned food that sat out all day, and the salmon, it was overcooked and wasn’t prepared well at all. If I could, I would give it a 0 star review, but the show was okay, so it is 1 star. And the gold panning, there was little instruction on how to do it. There were tip jars everywhere, but nothing was deserving of a tip. I was surprised they even had any money in them. The driver was driving on the wrong side of the road half the time, and wasn’t going to provide enough seats until they were told to, in which they sent another van, only then. They never told us where to go, so we just walked until we found where to go. Most of the people there just left immediately after seeing what it was. It was just a scheme to extract money, and this was very expensive and what they say on their website is mostly untrue

We went to Liarsville as a cruise tour. We booked the Klondike breakfast and gold panning. Uncle Merwin was funny and entertaining but that’s about all they have going on. The gift shop is very small, you will find the same merchandise in the many Skagway shops cheaper. The breakfast was good. Gold panning was very comical. You are given a pan with your dirt and gold already in, you wash and dump that’s it. The gold flakes at the bottom are so tiny they are hard to see. It’s something entertaining to do, but don’t expect to find anything if value.

Do I need to have waterproof rain boots/gum boots for the waterfall/gold panning? Are regular running shoes or hiking shoes acceptable?

Hello Happy Blue Dragon (love the name)
Is there enough time to do the White Pass Railway tour and this tour? If so, what times does this tour departs? What was the weather like?

We were in a tour group that went there. You might want to check tour companies in the area.

We are finding most excursions to be pricey, so we are only planning on doing one excursion through our cruiseline. We are a family of 3 adults (daughter is 18) and one child, which is causing most excursions to be over $300. Having said that, we also want to be able to enjoy the trip. I am wondering if there is an option to go to Liarsville and not do a meal as part of it. Can we walk or take a bus/taxi to the camp and tour it/pan for gold? If not, then is there such a place in Skagway that a family can pan for gold and learn about the Klondike gold rush on our own, without a ship excursion? Thank you.

I think you should call the company that runs liarsville and ask if you can come between shows. We did an excursion there with pancakes eggs and steak around a campfire. We were the only ones - and we found gold in the stream. It was great- and they have down time between the shows so they may be able to accommodate something else. Can't hurt to try!
