Fun Shops and the Occasional Restaurant

Of the three ports we visited on an Alaskan cruise, Skagway was our least favourite, despite probably being the most well known. My basic issue with the town is its lack of authenticity and the predominance of tacky souvenire shops. I know, of course, that the good folk of Skagway have to make a living from a relatively short tourist... More

Very quaint place looks just like an old west movie town. nice walk around town, even cafe staff were dressed in old fashioned costumes! Had a nice bus trip to the Gold Rush Cemetary and Canadian border from here also.

Skagway, AK is a very small town but was my favorite stop in Alaska. The people of the town were very hospitable and friendly. Everything was in walking distance. I would LOVE to travel here again. The streets and whole town were very clean, with a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions to choose from.

State St. and Broadway offer quite a bit of shopping but for the most part, it doesn't hold much that you can't get in another Alaskan city. It's a fun old little city, picturesque but other than that....there isn't much to do or see in the city it's self.

It is a must stop.. Fun place and the food was really good too! The waitresses dress in 'brothel' attire and really entertain. You can tell they love their job.

Enjoyed a very nice stroll around Skagway. Yes, there were some shops with souvenirs and yes there were a few jewelry shops but the town came across as authentic. There were also several shops and galleries selling the works of very talented local artisans. There is a lovely garden right by the spotless public washrooms just off the main street.... More

Love the old buildings and 1800's look. Looks like something right out of a movie set. There's lots of small shops.

This town is stuck in time as far as the buildings are concerned. It was great walking around and shopping, imagining what it was like back in the gold-rush era. See the Arctic Brotherhood Hall, covered in over 8,000 pieces of driftwood. We stopped into the Red Onion Saloon, just to see the inside, but you can pay to go... More

I hate to say it but all the ports are basically made up with Diamond and gem ,t shirt, carving stores. Its a bit of a tourist trap with a hint of the local culture. Its nice to get off the ship and people watch as you walk around. After a few stops you see all the same things for sale ,just another town... You can't walk down these streets without wondering what it was like "back in the day". Remove the modern automobiles and you could be back in the late 1800's. I love the feel of Skagway. Small town and homey. Lots of shops to browse and pubs where you can wet your whistle.
