I am ambivalent at best about visiting historical sites unless they're the classics of the great Italian cities or offer something fairly unique. But I allowed myself to be convinced to visit Tournus, and I'm glad I did. You'd have to be a heathen to find the architecture unimpressive. The pink stone and gorgeous stained glass windows give the interior excellent light; the chapel up the spiral staircase is dripping with history, and the crypt downstairs spooky and filled with ancient energy.

I liked the Tournus Abbaye, and I liked the glass of white Burgundy in the sunshine at the café next door too.

Hope this reveiw helps you in your Burgundy trip planning, please give me a helpful vote if so!

Very nice abbey, with fee entrance. Beautiful inside.
It has some lovely inner gardens, as well as a crypt where they keep the remains of Valerien.

The place is impressive and this is a beautiful part of town well worth visiting, sort of surprize in such a small town.

This 11th century cathedral in Tournus is a must see. Don;t visit southern Burgundy without making a stop.

At the end of a guided tour from the river cruise ship MS A-Rosa Stella we came to this building with its incredibly high ceiling. We were fortunate that an organist was playing which raised the hairs on my neck. We so enjoyed our visit, we walked back in the afternoon for a second look. There is also an adjacent building with, when we were there, an interesting exhibition by local artistes.

We visited here with our two children aged 6 and 8. To be frank churches etc only really hold their attention for so long ... But this really is a gem. From the little mosaic at the end to the crypt underneath the church, there was plenty to hold their imagination and the adults enjoyed it too! Walking around the crypt even just looking up at the stations of the cross plaques was atmospheric. Well worth a trip.
Top tip: if it's a nice day, you could do much worse that have lunch up by the abbey overlooking the pretty square.

A lovely Abbey that’s been well preserved by many hands over many years. Great Roman mosaic floor by the abse, too . Well worth an hour or two & a trip up the tower !

Regardless of how many cathedrals and churches you have visited this bears a look as it is really so old and the romanesque style so beautiful and well preserved.

We were amazed at the this wonderful Abbey, cloisters and towers on stopping in Tournus. The tourist information was very informative and the town great for a wander round with a good choice of places to eat. The Abbey is surprising large and obviously a big part of the local community with many interesting features to view. Don't miss going down the Crypt and climbing the tower behind the organ! If this is of little interest to you, go to the Bicycle Museum just to the south of the town, amazing.

The Romanesque abbey of Tournus (10 and 11 century), gorgeous, is the best preserved of France from this period with its crypt, its abbey buildings (cloister, chapter house, refectory, cellar, and home of the monks). The towers of its ancient walls of protection are also visible. A must for all lovers of old stones and Roman art. There is through the old town many testimony of this period. Across the Maconais s' hills at the west of the town, several roman's churchs can be visited in old villages, like Chapaize (the best) or Brancion.
