The great French classical composer Maurice Ravel was born in the Basque town of Ciboure in 1875. St Jean de Luz harbour was famous as a whale fishing port and it is now a renowned sardine fishing port and a really lovely place to visit. With brightly coloured boats, fishermen mending their nets, a backdrop of beautiful Basque architecture and a whiff of salty sea air this is surely a haven of the senses. The lovely Quai Maurice Ravel is probably best viewed from the harbour of St Jean de Luz - a dream come true for painters and photographers

Pretty as a picture. With Pavlovsky's art-deco lighthouses and unchanged harbour front, place of birth of Maurice Ravel, the pagoda bell tower of Eglise St Vincent behind in Rue Pocalette. Great atmosphere in Café O'Garra - but also seek out the little bars in the streets nearby at the fronton and Rue de la Fontaine.

Away from the touristy town of Saint Jean de Luz, this cute harbor and beach town is a delight. Especially quiet in October. Sandy beaches, small restaurants and picturesque harbor.

Named after Cibournes most famous son Maurice Ravel this charming little harbour is a lovely place to stroll around, even in inclement weather.

A buzzing, thriving and friendly community with good amenities, small shops, post office and a few restaurants and bars and an immaculately clean launderette.
Very helpful staff in Tourist Info. centre, (far better than in St. Jean de Luz).

It is a sort of contrast as you look towards Donibane-Lohizune (st Jean de Luz), just over the bridge, but the difference between both is huge and the atmosphere here is really interesting.
