About
Nectandra Garden Public Tours Nectandra is open to the public and dedicated to public education. To enhance the enjoyment of our visitors and to minimize the human impact on the forest, the number of visitors permitted entry each day will be limited. We have naturalist-guided tours for a limited number of visitors by reservations. Garden day-tour programs may be tailored according to the visitors’ interests and customized to the visitors’ available time, their interest and physical stamina. The Nectandra walk is approximately 3 hours, through dense forest and undulating terrain. In addition to the informative discourse with our naturalist guides along the way, visitors will have ample chance to hear the sounds of the forest, to observe the fauna and flora, and to experience the serenity of the place. The entrance fee includes the guided tour and a short lecture program. Please inquire about discounts available to education groups by arrangement. Reservation is required. We will only honor reservations with advance payment, or which are confirmed by email 24-48 hours prior to the visit. The Garden is open every day by reservation only, from 8 AM through 3 PM.

Fantastic experience
Dec 2018 • Family
Running a low density, high quality tour to educate folks about this increasingly rare habitat offered us a great experience. Access to this type habitat is becoming increasingly difficult, much less accessing it with staff and managers who are actively researching and restoring it is even rarer. What an awesome experience. Walking through the forest with Arturo and Evelyne was a real treat for my wife and I, and an even larger treat for our daughter. Rather than getting a "canned" 30,000-foot overview of the cloud forest, we got into some real details, and Arturo and I were able to talk to our daughter about the plants in the cloud forest, and what their "cousins" are that she sees in our forests in the southeastern US.

The lunch break in the forest was in a great little building, and the locally sourced food was fantastic.

I can't recommend Nectandra Cloud Forest Garden enough.

Cloud forest preservation 101 in a spectacular Costa Rican preserve
Apr 2019 • Business
Nectandra's stewards Evelyne and Arturo spent a morning with us exploring and explaining the fauna and flora of a cloud forest. Every surface offers an example of incredible adaptation and beauty (bring a camera). The changes they have seen over several decades (effects of surrounding deforestation, global warming, public policy) and their community based efforts to restore cloud forests in neighboring areas provide a fascinating window into the uncertain future for this unique and biodiverse resource. Thanks for the incredible and inspiring commitment to the planet! I also enjoyed the delicious meal in the "canopy" and the chance to spend time with permanent staff and visiting student researchers.

What an experience! A must see!
Jun 2018
As part of our recent Quest for Pura Vida tour with Costa Rica Expeditions, we visited the Nectandra Cloud Forest Botanical Gardens in San Ramon, Costa Rica. What a wonderful first stop on our tour – my husband and two teenage boys thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Our tour of these beautiful gardens in the cloud forest served as a perfect introduction to the fauna and floral in Costa Rica, and we were fortunate to be escorted through the gardens by both Evelyn and Arturo, the founders of this beautiful preserve. Both were extremely knowledgeable about the animals, plants and flowers and the forest’s ecosystem. And we found their passion for preserving and regenerating the cloud forest so inspiring. They both shared so much wonderful information and pointed out many plant and animal species on our tour that we could have easily overlooked otherwise. After our tour we enjoyed a delicious lunch learning even more about the work being done by the Nectandra Cloud Forest Gardens and its sister organization, the Nectandra Institute. I highly recommend a visit to Nectandra Cloud Forest Gardens on your visit to Costa Rica – you will not be disappointed. Reservations are required

Ah, Costa Rica Expeditions! They are wonderful. I have used them as well and wherever they take us is truly an exquisite experience. We welcome families at Nectandra such as yourselves. The adults understand immediately the importance and essence of the Costa Rica Cloud Forest. The younger people absorb and digest the information a wee bit later. It is sometimes after our vacations, that we realize how much they have understood, absorbed and digested the information. The essence of nature lives within them, Thank-you for sharing Nectandra with your family. We are honored to have met you. Kathi~Nectandra Guest Relations

Nectandra is a perfect union of heart and head in the very challenging effort to redeem the extraordinary biodiversity of this area of Costa Rica. Scientists with a passion for restoring balance that produces, as natural, both beauty and primordial connectedness to our source. This is a place to be a student, to learn, to wonder at the next walking stick bug that looks like lichen or next leaf that is viagra for hummingbirds. Your guides are wise and humble before the fruits of their ongoing labor. You will make a reservation. YES the garden is yours for at least 4 hours and your lunch will be not only locally sourced and creatively inspired but will have you floating in a junglescape conversing with your guides. Amazing is the system of rather royal stone wide paths and even handrails where important. An important treasure and legacy

Amazing cloud rainforest experience
Feb 2018 • Family
Our family (with cynical teens) really enjoyed our time with David and Evelyne, the owners and co-founders of Nectandra. Despite the unseasonably sunny day (!!!), we experienced some of the great flora and fauna diversity of the cloud rainforest environment. We even saw a couple of toucans!

David and Evelyne's dedication to the preservation of this environment, their incredible knowledge of the flora and fauna, and Evelyne's delicious lunch made this a highlight of our trip to Costa Rica.

We are delighted that all of you enjoyed everything that Nectandra has to offer. The flora and fauna are certainly diverse as you mentioned combined with a bit of sun and Evelyns lunch... seems like a most wonderful day in Costa Rica. Thank-you for your lovely review. Preservation of Cloud Forest
Feb 2018 • Friends
Nectandra is a magnificent example of what a few committed people can do to protect and study the complex cloud forest. Costa Rica Expeditions arranged a tour with Arturo and Evelyn and the opportunity to lunch with them. This was one of the most fulfilling events of our trip to Costa Rica. Evelyn is truly a force to be reckoned with. She and her husband, with Arturo and their now deceased partner have done, and I'm sure will continue to do, amazing things with the preserve and the surrounding communities. Even if you "only" tour the grounds, you will be immersed in the beauty of this beautiful environment which you will never forget.

You have said it all. A handful of dedicated people have made a difference to protect the cloud forest & Evelyne is truly a force to be reckoned with! We are elated that you appreciated and cherished the cloud forests of Nectandra and the lands of Costa Rica. May you have warm memories for a very long time. Thank-you for your wonderful review. NOTE: We spoke about possible memberships for the continued protection of Nectandra. Keep an eye on the Nectandra organization website for updates. Kathi – Nectandra Guest Relations

A deeper understanding . . .
Jan 2018 • Couples
As a result of our 3 hour private tour with Evelyne and Arturo, we developed a much deeper understanding of the Costa Rican cloud forests - what makes them unique/distinct, and the threat that they’re under as a result of climate change and other human activity. They also shared the very fine work that they’re doing with several local communities.

Both Arturo and Evelyne are highly knowledgeable and extremely committed to their work. Wonderful, personable, quietly passionate individuals.

This is not a wowie-zowie whiz-bang kind of experience. However, it left a profound and lasting impression on us. We strongly recommend it. Note that it requires an (advance) reservation, which we got very easily on their website.

A ‘profound and lasting impression’ is perhaps, better than wowie-zowies! Thank-you for your delightful and thoughtful review. Evelyne and Arturo have read your review and say ‘thank-you for your generosity’. Also, thank-you for mentioning advance reservations on the Nectandra organization website. Perhaps we will see you again in the Costa Rica Cloud Forest. Kathi-Nectandra - Guest Relations

Evelyn, one if the founders is interesting and very knowledgeable. She, her Husband and an other couple manage this place...scientists and researchers. Easy but long walk...no bathroom...so, be prepared! Very accommodating.
