Salt production by the evaporation of seawater has been going on in Ston for centuries, and contributed hugely to the economy of this part of Croatia. The town itself was surrounded by an extensive defensive wall system to deter invaders and protect the salt works.
This type of production relies on the slow evaporation of water from salt pans and eventual harvesting of pure salt crystals during the hot summer months.
There is a small AV centre which explains the methods employed here.

Saline di Ston is the salt works located in the surroundings of Ston, a walled Middle-Ages town in Dalmatian Coast. We went there at the end of October-2022 (low season) and buildings were closed, but we could walk around the saltworks and see them. Also, if you go up to walls, you can see very nice views of saltworks, which has different colours, especially at morning. A very beautiful photo.

We walked round the island, but did not fancy the very steep climb to the walls, watching others doing it in the hot sun exhausted me. once you have walked around, you realise there is not much there other than a church and restaurants, you could go to the salt museum if you really want to, but I think sitting in s bar is a much better idea.

We were here on a morning in early October. The visitor's centre had a somewhat informative video describing the works of the sea salt extraction and harvesting. We were the only couple here and we wandered around for maybe three quarters of an hour. From the looks of the video there is a lot more going on in the summer and it looks to be a fun stop when it is in operation.

Unique place, place where people produced salt for the centuries, under different circumstances... So, today when you find yourself there you can feel that atmosfere. You can get perfectly clean salt and hear the story about ancient times.

Salt has been collected in this area for over 4000 years and the long fortification served as protection for this important resource. The current 58 swimming pools can be seen from above along the path of the walls.
