My wife and I just attended the level 1 course from Kona Freedivers with instructor Nico Testa, and it was a tremendous success for us! While both of us had difficulty equalizing, we nonetheless got more than what we came for in this excellent course of instruction. Since we could not complete our school drills to depth we did not receive our certifications this time around - which is great with us because it keeps us honest anf helps keep the sport clean and safe. We do get the opportunity to pcik up where we left off and get another chance to certify as Fii L1 freedivers when we are able to master our 20 meter equalization challenges. The instructor was great, the staff in the dive shop were all outstanding - our sincere thanks has to go to Ali, Alex and Ashley - "the triumvirate of A+ ladies on planet earth!" Best customer service, ever! I had the chance to meet the owner, Byron, on the beach casually after my class and he was also the consummate professional, and he personally greeted each of us students and asked about us and our class as we were coming out of the bay. With his baby in his arms, he was out there on a Sunday morning following up with his students/clients. We are excited to look forward to going back to Kona Freedivers again! Thank you Nico, Ali, Alex, Ashley and Byron. Also an honor and pleasure to be with James and Tony - my new heroes....

This was my first time freediving after getting certified and Nico made sure it was a great time! The diving was super safe, Nico made sure I was breathing right, relaxed, and in proper form. We saw tons of sea life, from collector anemones and eagle rays to white tip reef sharks and even a manta day at a cleaning station! And the entire time we could hear the whales singing (much easier while freediving than when scubaing FYI). Thank you Nico! Pro tip: bring a mask that fits. All faces are different, they had a sweet low volume mask that I was super eager to try, but my face wasn’t having it. Luckily I brought my scuba mask which ended up fine.

Nico was an awesome instructor for the level one FII course. I feel like I got the full tool kit that I needed to progress in the sport both in theory and practice. Provided the right level of challenge without any compromise on safety. Inspired me to push on, go deeper, and realize that ‘Big Blue’ Zen experience.

I took the Fii Level I freediving course with Cory last month. I wasn't able to equalize my ears even 10 feet down the day I started (recurrent sinus problems) and Cory not only taught me techniques that made me more comfortable and confident with equalizing in the water, he gave me alternative techniques to get me down to 15 m / 49 ft on my second day of the course! I was so happy to be able to push even that far with what I thought was a major limitation before. I then got my first pair of freediving fins from the shop, and they were so helpful! Byron overheard that I was looking for a pair and have the tiniest feet, and he came out of the office to help fit me and find ways to make the smallest foot pocket fit. He assembled the fins for me that day! I was so happy to have them ready in time for my flight the next morning =) They feel incredible too! I also got to do the Manta Ray Night dive with them! The trip completely exceeded my expectations; we got out to the site before sunset and I got to freedive as I watched the sun dip into the water with me as it set. It was magical! The dive after was amazing. They really take good care of guests! And the boat was a blast. I can't say enough good things about Kona Freedivers and Kona Honu Divers. Definitely my favorite shop on the Big Island: the staff is so kind, accommodating, helpful, encouraging, and stoked on diving! It's a great place to explore the Big Island's waters!

Can’t say enough good things about Kona Freedivers. I was looking for people and a place to learn and practice freediving. I discovered this operation because Martin Stepanek’s Dive Camp was hosted out of this shop and I attended it last year (October 2016). Everything I could ask for was here. All the instructors, (Corey, Dillon, Sandy…including Byron, the owner) teach FII techniques. They’re safety oriented, experienced and patient. The dive spots I got to see were canyons of old lava flows, covered in corals teaming with wildlife. On Feb 1, 2017 the water was 73 degrees with >60’ visibility. This day we saw dozens of spinner dolphin, a manta ray about four feet in diameter, many jillions of fish and a tiger shark. Well… the tiger shark we saw from the boat at the harbor mouth, so there was no danger of it eating any of us. We also got to try out tow-boarding. FUN!! You can skim 20+ feet below the surface, do barrel rolls and watch the underwater world pass by at a couple knots of boat speed. The shop is good too with the latest in freedive equipment and scuba. If you’re in to scuba, all the plusses above still apply.
