The tour was very poor. The tour guide did not know much information and talked more about things to do around Kona, i.e. what pubs to go to, etc. I felt it was a total waste of my money and my time and would never recommend this tour to any friends or family visiting the island.

I was expecting the typical tour with historical stories mixed in with some “ghostly” tales. Instead we walked around while the guide uses some kind of ghost app. Lots of “dead” time while we waited for the app to say something like “error”. The guide didn’t really tell us any stories unless we asked a question. I’ve done lots of these types of tours and this one unfortunately didn’t seem like it was put together or prepared very well. Spend your money elsewhere.

I signed up with Big Island Ghost Tours the night before I left for the mainland. It turned out to be the best fun I had on Kona. Zach, the owner, was super nice when I called to ask about it and again the day of the event when I confirmed everything. I was impressed with his passion about Hawaii's history and culture. Katie was our tour guide and despite having a headache when we started, powered on to give us the best and most fun tour. She was awesome as was Wayne, a trainee tour guide, and his friend Rachel. I couldn’t believe all the fantastic facts they told us about Hawaii and it’s rich history, besides being able to pronounce all the Hawaiin words. It was the best group and the best evening. You walk for 2 hours (at night, several stops) but it’s not far. You are introduced to very spiritual places like the King’s Palace and the oldest church in Hawaii which is made of volcano rock. Zach had mentioned to go early to see the King’s Palace museum before it closed at 4:00pm and I’m so glad I did as I was able to see their furniture, pictures, and the actual dress of “The Lady In White” whose ghostly presence is sometimes seen on the premise. She is on their website. Our group didn’t see her, but you can’t just produce something paranormal like that, it needs to just happen if you’re lucky. I was so excited about the tour I forgot to take pictures to see if I captured an orb. They used a spirit box and we did get messages and noises. It was really exciting. It’s probably the least expensive and most fun thing to do on the island!!! Wish I’d read about the their other tours before I left.

The only good experience was the history we learned of the royal hawaiian family, the warriors and sacrifices as told by our tour guide. Frankly, the tour should have been canceled by the Big Island Ghost Tours since the Ironman festivities were going on which they were aware of. The entire walking tour was like party going on around us.... very busy with people, lights, music. Because of this, we did not experience any paranormal activity. The tour was not we expected and was not worth the money we paid.

Response from Zach R, Owner at Big Island Ghost Tours
Responded Oct 19, 2017
Hi Nancy, We totally understand that because you booked near Ironman there were a lot more people than normal in town, however, we didn't feel the need to cancel based on that reason alone. We usually take guests on a slightly different path when there are lots of people around, which we did in this case. As far as experiencing paranormal activity goes - you can't predict it or make it happen at will, as most guests understand, so sorry your expectations were not met.
