A casual conversation in the resort hot tub convinced me to book this tour and it was a great choice. The bay that you leave from is beautiful and certainly sets the stage for a very pleasant afternoon. The captain pointed out several marine animals on our way to the bay (and back) and gave us a brief overview of some of the area history. The crew were all friendly and helpful. The snorkel experience did not disappoint and the entire afternoon was great.

The Hula Kai is a great vessel for this type of snorkel exploration tour. It is fast and can get you to the snorkeling sites quickly. The day we went had cloudy/rainy weather and heavy seas, which meant that conditions at the first snorkeling site were not acceptable. Nevertheless we had a great experience at the second stop, the more protected Kealakekua Bay. The crew is attentive and serves soft drinks, tea, or coffee and breakfast & lunch. A cash bar is also ready for your order. The water entry/exit is easy with the twin rear ladders. Honestly, there are three reasons to take a guided snorkel tour over just going by car to the snorkel areas: 1) they will take you to the best snorkel sites; 2) the ease of getting in and out of the water with a vessel equipped for that purpose; 3) the crew knows the local conditions. This operator is one of the best and I would recommend any of the Fair Wind tours.

We’ve taken this tour with Fair Winds before, and we always have an excellent time. We get lots of excellent Hawaiian history and marine life information throughout the day. The catamaran is extremely comfortable, even for those who need shade and bathrooms. It’s a lovely 45-minute boat ride to the Cove, and we always see such beautiful, marine life while there, sometimes even spinner dolphins! We usually see Hawaiian humpback whales too. We look forward to taking this tour again on a future visit to the Big Island.

The boat and staff were awesome. The boat was really cool allowed for awesome views while we were getting to our destination. The snorkeling was beautiful. We definitely book this again and recommend this tour!

The Hula Kai trip was as good as usual. Staff willing to assist and looking for whales a top priority. However, the breakfast and lunch are TERRIBLE. The meals are vegan and particularly awful. What used to be a beef burger, lots of salads and sides, and a cookie, is now 2 fluffy buns with a concoction of ulu (breadfruit) and jackfruit inside, which I left, a salad without dressing (although I did see it later, even though it was not offered) and an ulu potato salad that was inedible, along with purple potato chips, which could break one's teeth. Followed by a cookie I didn't taste, as it was vegan. Breakfast was offered which my friends said was oatmeal, although it is written up as muesli. I didn't partake. If the owner wants to offer vegan food, that's fine, but please offer an alternative that is not vegan. The food was not diabetic friendly. In addition, the coffee was barely warm, and even less so after adding either soy milk or almond milk. Powdered milk in packets was, I believe, an option. If I ever join the cruise again, I will bring my own breakfast and lunch, if the menu doesn't change. And please offer HOT coffee with dairy creamer (or do I have to bring that, too?).

Best snorkeling trip I’ve ever been on! Highly recommend for everyone. Staff was super friendly and they have a high dive board and slides and all food served is vegan. They have breakfast and lunch and cookies for a snack. Free soft drinks all day and alcohol for purchase on the return trip. The snorkeling was beautiful and the salt water was so buoyant you don’t even need a floatation device but they are available if you want it. The captain stopped many times to point out whales so we could whale watch as it’s the season now and he shared history about the island and educational info about the whales. We also saw dolphins. It was a fantastic trip! And the crew were all so happy that we were there. Super friendly and attentive. When my son took in some salt water and had a stomach ache they offered ginger candy or ginger ale. They seemed to really care. So nice.

Instructor said the manta rays would come right up to the light bar we would hold on to and turn upside down. We say 1 manta at a distance in 45 minutes. Our tour was choppy, making it hard to hold on, keep noodles under our feet as we bobbed up and down for 45 minutes. It took all my energy to swim back to the boat against the current and in the chop - no one was around on the steps as I struggled to swim to them, and then climb up. In contrast, I did a beach Manta ray tour at the beach of the Manta Kea, calm bay, saw 3 mantas extremely up close for 30 minutes, no chop, no competing with dozens of boards, each with lights. Also, the beach dive didn’t start til much after dusk, compared with Fair Winds, and so the lights in the dark seemed to immediately attract the mantas.

We have been going out on the Fairwinds a few times a year for over fifteen years. Always a good trip, always enjoyable, always a memorable experience.

The snorkeling is always spectacular. Kealakekua Bay is one of the best dive/snorkel sites in the islands and the Fairwinds has the best mooring location in the bay. Actually the only mooring as the new rules do not allow new mooring points and Fairwind's is grandfathered in. All other boats have to drift about.

Sure, it is a big boat, but it never seems crowded, easily accomodating the folks aboard.

The food is reliable and good. They switched to a non-meat menu after the pandemic, but even a carnivore like me is satisfied after a couple BBQ jackfruit sandwiches.

The crew is professional and quite good at what they do. Have watched them handle a medical emergency smoothly. Just as smoothly they handle the little emergencies that always crop up with family outings. Broken mask strap? Something missing? They have seen it all and have a solution for you to save your morning.

Hints?

Grab a table in the main cabin downstairs. Better storage for your stuff in the crates under the seats, shade from the Sun, closer to the center of the boat with less rolling motion if sea sickness bothers you, easy access to the water as you get in and out, close to the food.

Spend a little time out on the bow watching the flying fish jump out of the way of the boat.

Just go and have a relaxed mornig in the water,

All around amazing tour, staff were great - very helpful, knowledgable, and seemed to really enjoy themselves. Everything was very well-coordinated - they run a tight ship! Food was excellent. We got on board last so our seats weren't the best, but we spent most of the time looking at dolphins (from the boat) and playing in the water. We are a family of 5, with kids aged 7 and 11. I would not bring kids younger than 7, and only an adventurous 7-year-old. (And picky kids might need to bring their own snacks.) If you tend toward motion sickness, this trip is not bad at all, but you might want to wear Sea-bands just to be safe.
