This beach is truly paradise found. It was as though my husband and I were the only two people on the earth. Too beautiful for words or pictures. The trek out there is not for the young, elderly, disabled or those in a low profile vehicle. The road was a bit rough getting there and then you keep on walking... More

The bumpy drive down is worth it. After a short walk (not a hike) you get to an amazing, quiet, beautiful, sandy beach. It has lots of trees for shade and the water is so warm. Careful though because although the beach isn't very rocky there are some in the sea, not alot but when you kick one it can... More

Do not miss this beach if you are a true beach lover. The hike there is ok, if you're lucky you'll see the goats! It's magic.

Like other reviewers mentioned, it is a beach you need to work for to get there, but the reward is a breath taking, all natural, secluded beach with a long stretch of creaming white sand and clear water. Don't be deterred by the "hike". It's not a hike, it's a walk. A walk on nothing but black, crumbles, rough, lava... More

By far the most beautiful white sand beach on the island. Be prepared for treacherous off-road driving and a decent hike to get there. If you're in for the haul, though, you'll be rewarded with a private and pristine beach.

This is a nice hidden beach that doesn't get a lot of traffic due to the rough road leading into the park. It is worth it to forge on down though as there aren't many people there. Also, if you have a Jeep, take the 4x4 trail to the southwest to get to the black sand beach.

If you don't mind a 20 minute car ride over a very rough lava field in your rental car and then a 20 minute hike to get there then you are in for a serious treat. This remote beach wedges in between two 100 year old lava flows and is one of the nicest beaches I have ever been on.... More

We spent the day at Mahai'ula Bay and decided to walk up to see Makalawena to see how long of an extra hike it would be and see if it would be worth packing our "beach stuff" up. It took us about 15 minutes from the water tower on Mahai'ula. The path was rough, but all 3 of us did... More

One of my favorite beaches on the island. A bit of a hike to get to, but well worth it! Bring in lots of water if you plan on staying here for a good part of the day, you wouldn't want to be hiking back and forth between your car and the beach.

We first visited Makalawena Beach in September 2013 and we loved it so much we went back again in January 2014. In addition to our original review (copied and pasted below), we have one recommendation to add: buy a beach umbrella at Target before coming here so that you will have shade. Even better, buy one of the beach umbrella... More
