About Cherry Pit Sportfishing
Cherry Pit is a 32' Force built in Hawaii for Hawaii waters. Bought in 2016, Cherry Pit is a major upgrade from our original boat. Owned and operated by Capt. Bobby Cherry. With a lifetime of experience Capt. Bobby knows the waters off the Kona coast as good as anyone. Here's a typical day on the Cherry Pit... start the day by catching bait, 10-20 opelu (mackerel) then we'll put the lures out and troll for Marlin, Ahi, Mahi-mahi and Ono while we keep our eyes peeled for Ahi schools and Mahi-mahi schools. That's when we start using our live bait, which will greatly increase our chances of catching these fish. Once we've caught our share we'll put the lures back out and troll home.

Aloha, I live in Kona and I wanted to take my family fishing, We booked an all day charter with myself, my two sons, and three grandkids. We are all local residents. Capt Bobby was awesome. This was my third try at at a fishing charter and it was by far the best. Bthe kids obby worked incredibly hard to find us a catch. First we caught live bait, cruised close to Maui on a beautiful day. We were rewarded with a 40 pound Mahi Mahi that made our day. The kids scrambled on the boat and the Capt let each of them drive. Afterwards, Booby filleted our fish and taught the kids all about Mahi what they eat etc. It was a totally memorable experience. Thanks for the great time! Robert Kobzi

We recently chartered a full day deep sea fishing tour and Captain Bobby and it was awesome. He really tried to ensure we had a great experience. We started off catching live bait and then attempted to catch a "big" one. Although we didn't catch a big fish we did catch 2 yellowfin tuna. Captain Bobby also cleaned and prepped the fish for us afterwards and provided us with best cooking tips. We highly recommend booking with Cherrypit Sportsfishing.

First off, Captain Bobby was great. Informative, friendly, and certainly reasonable. I would not hesitate to fish with him again. Fishing was slow. Sometimes that happens and Kona has done it to me twice now. However, if the point of going new places is to experience the unusual then the trip was a win: we had what appeared to be a small fin whale and her calf surface and mingle next to the boat for some time. I will leave it to Bobby to correct me in a comment if I am wrong but it appeared to be a Bryde's whale and that was a first for me.

Had a great trip with Bobby. He is very professional and takes pride in his work. Day started out a bit slow but Bobby worked hard and found some Mahi-Mahi had a great time pulling 17 of them into the boat. Would definitely recommend Bobby to any family and friends. We'll definitely go again with Captain Bobby.

We searched multiple fishing charters and decided on this one based on the discounted price (related to Captain Bobby selling some catches) and a one star review response he gave that made him seem like our type of guy. Long story short: we had a great day fishing. After an hour of bait fishing for mackerel (we caught 5), we spent the rest of the day trolling/live bait fishing and caught 3 yellow finned tuna, weighing 90#, 100#, and 120#. I cannot stress enough that fishing is fishing and it was made apparent that our day was above average. But I feel that a fishing charter review should only be based slightly on fish caught. I’m fairly confident that Lady Luck could have easily not have shined upon us today and we caught nothing. Regardless, we saw 100s of dolphins swimming and hunting, flying fish escaping dolphins and tuna jumping, and birds diving from above to catch the fleeing flying fish. All in all, Captain Bobby is knowledgeable, friendly, hard working, and has great instincts. This is the first time I’ve been fishing in Hawaii, so have nothing to compare it to. While I was slightly bummed we were not able to catch a fish to take home for ourselves, we figured the $150-$250 we saved compared to other charters could be used to buy a nice fish dinner at a restaurant instead. In conclusion, if you want to catch fish to eat at a restaurant or take back to your place and cook yourself, another charter may be a better option (though I can’t speak to any certainty to that claim. And it will almost certainly be more expensive). But if your primary concern is getting on big fish, having a personable experience, and being part of the crew while helping the captain catch big fish, I’m fairly certain there is no better option on Hawaii than Captain Bobby.
