Captain Peter or Paul and first mate Patrick were awsome on our sunset sail out of Kona. My son wanted a sailing catamaran not a motor sail and I found Kamanu on yelp. It did not disappoint, the crew snd boat was fabulous. Felt more intimate then the larger tours. You can’t go wrong with this crew.…

This was perhaps my seventh tour with Kamanu in the past 25 years. I used to bring groups of high school students, and have been with just my family a few times. My daughter's first snorkel as a little girl was off the Kamanu. I like this company because the boat is SMALLER and more intimate than the giant "Body Glove" boats with tons of people. For this tour, there were just four of us (besides the crew). My wife was recovering from surgery on a broken ankle and we weren't sure about how she would do getting into and out of the boat, but Captain Tim and Julian did a great job helping her get onto and off of the boat and into and out of the water with no fuss. We were the only boat at the snorkel spot for most of the tour, and Captain Tim gave us an amazing sailing experience with stiff winds on the way back to port. He stopped only once so that we could watch whales. We brought friends who were Big Island virgins for this trip, and the Kamanu was a major highlight of the trip for them. We will definitely be back another day.…

We were on a whale watching trip, so this was not their sailing boat. While we did see 4 whales on the trip, we were unimpressed by several things. First, to get on and of the boat, we felt unsafe. They put a plank, completely unattached, no rails and no help from staff from the dock to the boat. You had to step about a foot forward on the plank so it didn't tip up and topple over, plus because of the tide, it was on a downward angle toward the boat. Once on the boat, the walking space was angled downward toward the water so you had to hold onto the railing and there was no barrier on the edge of the boat to prevent you from slipping off the boat. If we had seen the physical characteristics of the boat ahead of time, we would have booked elsewhere. We are not novices and have been on many charters before. Once on the way, we were disappointed that there was virtually no commentary about whales (other than to point them out). Usually there is at least some attempt to educate and inform about the whales and migration. …

We purchased tickets to do the Sunset Sail. Definitely a different experience than advertised. It was not a bad experience at all. We just were expecting some sailing, some education from the captain about the surrounding areas, and potentially seeing whales or Something. But we boated right out of the marina and basically just sat there. They did have food and drinks which were good. But if you book this experience, just know this is what to expect.…
