These guys had amazing customer service. We are nobodies from the Midwest, in town for a week, signed our 12 year old up for a first surf lesson. On Monday, the sea did not cooperate with our plan and was very flat. Somebody from the shop called to tell us it would not be a good lesson day. We rescheduled. Same thing happened the next day. We rescheduled. Third day (our final day there), waves were again very petite. But the website asks for the surfer’s weight, and the guys noticed that my son only weighs 75 lbs. They thought there was just enough action to get him up on a board. His instructor, Mike, was awesome. He took my 12 year old out despite the small waves, split the propulsion duties 50/50 with the ocean, helped him have a successful first surfing experience.

Bonus, there is a local photographer who comes out to take photos, and they are High quality, really beautiful shots, available online, and very reasonably priced. I was on the rocks near him, and he was very pleasant. Gave me a perfect avocado that was later confiscated by the airport Fruit Patrol (my bad for thinking as long as the avocado was eaten before we landed, it was all good). Five starts for Kona Surf Photography. No star rating to the avocado confiscators.

During our week in Kona, my 14-year old daughter and myself took a semi-private lesson with Corey. The whole process right from the beginning when checking in until the lesson was complete was fantastic in every interaction with all of the Kahaluu Bay Surf team. Corey was a great instructor and was really focused on helping us get full value from our lesson. This was the first time we had both surfed in the ocean (wakesurfing is not the same) and Corey made sure we had a great experience. Corey made sure we both caught as many waves as possible, he cheered our successes, and made sure to help us improve wherever possible. My daughter said our surf lesson was one of the top highlights of our trip (and I am sure that the fact, with Corey’s teaching, that he had her outperforming her Dad might have had something to do with it). I would definitely book another session to surf with KBS&S on our next trip to the Big Island.

During our stay, we also rented a body board and umbrella a couple of separate days for use at Magic Sand Beach during our week in Kona. Every time we stopped into the shop, they were all very friendly and super helpful, and wanted to make sure our vacation was as good as they could help make it.

Our family would definitely recommend Kahaluu Bay Surf & Sea for surfing lessons, or to rent some gear to make a day at the beach more enjoyable!

I couldn't have asked for a better way to pop my surfing cherry than lessons with Ben at Kahaluu Bay Surf and Sea. We had three people in our group, Ben taught us the basics on land and got us comfortable with longboards before we went out near the rocks out on the bay, where the swells would funnel into a perfect sweet spot for us to learn to catch our first waves.

Ben would help us spot the better waves and tell us when to paddle and then when to stand up and give us pointers after each wave, lots of great tips on where to position our shoulders, bending our knees, and after a few waves I caught a nice ride where I was even turning my board a bit on the wave - it felt exhilarating.

It started pouring rain while we were out there, but Ben's energy and positivity helped us realize that surfing in the rain is majestic; the white droplets pitter-patter across your surfboard and bounce around on the surface of the water, not only assisting us in spotting the waves but also creating an ASMR effect around you, massaging your body as your ears ring gently to the sound of cascading water. The rain water has a cooling effect too out here in the Hawaiian sun, and makes being in the water even more cozy and comforting.

We even had some dolphins come by and say hi, as Ben pointed them out on the horizon, I turned my gaze around just in time to see a dolphin pop off an aerial, as if showing off it can surf better!

Hands down one of my most memorable experiences to date.

I have been so happy that I took the recommendation of a local friend to pick Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea as the place to take my first surfing lesson! So far I have taken two lessons with their company and both of the instructors I have had were up-beat, encouraging, and fun to surf with. They prioritize their customer’s safety and are sure to give everyone the best experience possible, even when it means going out of their way to contact me before a lesson asking if I wanted to change it to a time when the surf would be optimal.

Their staff has been nothing but kind and easy to work with. I have continued to rent boards from them for the past few weeks and don’t plan on ever picking any other company to go through. They are located right across the street from the beautiful Kahalu’u Bay, so it truly could not be more convenient. The vibe in the bay has been great every time I’ve been out. Everyone in the water is very encouraging and happy to see others out there.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable lesson or for an affordable, convenient place to rent a board I highly recommend Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea. There is nothing more magical than surfing over the top of the schools of Hawaiian fish, especially the abundance of yellow tang, that call Kahalu’u Bay home!

Kahalu'u Bay Surf & Sea is the spot, they went above and beyond. Their vibes, love for the sport and teaching others is as clear as the water in the Kona.

My initial lesson was postponed when the surf was flat and the tide off. Ben made a point to reach out so I could reschedule. He wanted to make sure I was able to have waves to actually learn on. From the get go I was beyond impressed.

Isha and Ben are so welcoming, absolute gems. I instantly felt comfortable and safe as soon as we were introduced. Ben walked me through positioning on the board, paddling, two different pop ups, and bailing safely on land. He made sure I was a hundred percent comfortable on land before entering the water, while Isha got the boards across the street. Once I was ready, it was literally a walk across Alii to the Bay.

Isha walked this newb through entering the rocky, slippery shore and offered a hand when I needed it. Step by step she was there to guide me and offer instruction. Once we paddled out we went over surf etiquette and other important tips. Then the real fun began.

Isha was there to help remind me when to paddle harder, pop up, and how to work smarter not harder, safely, out on the water. On my wipeouts she'd guide me on what I did wrong and how to improve on the next wave and she cheered with me whenever I would successfully stand up on a wave. She even caught onto a large rock that I was nervous about and got me over my fear! Continuously, she would remind me if my positioning was off, if I needed to adjust, or if I was starfishing while paddling hahaha. When I needed a rest after a nice ride and long paddle back, she was more than willing to let me catch my breath. She even taught me how to safely get through and/or catch a larger wave when a couple rogues came through.

When it was time to head back in, we passed by Ben giving lessons, and he was jazzed about a few waves he saw me stand up on. The compassion, love, and joy, they both emit resonated with me. Back on shore I was able to rinse off in a fresh water shower on their property and a recommendation for some food nearby.

From beginning to end the lesson didn't stop. I was constantly given information for safety, tips, recommendations for a decent cheap beginner board to continue to learn on, etc. Isha is so darn knowledgable in all things surfing and answered all my questions.

So stoked to continue to learn even as a 30 yo newb. I can't thank them enough for such a great morning that had me cheesing all day and now. Your instruction, guidance, and help will stick with me for life. I'll def pop in or say hi when we're near by!
Mahalo!

Our family of 4 ( 2 adults and 2 children ages 6 and 10) signed up for a private lesson + a semi private lesson. Every aspect of this was great. I had tried surfing before with a buddy who was really just out to surf and it was frustrating. The land instruction was short and to the point. Then we took a short hike across the street and were in the water. Our instructors Preston (for our 6 year old) and Rory (for the rest of us) were incredible. Our 10 year old was up and surfing like a champ making multiple runs, our 6 year old chatted Preston's ear off and he got her onto a number of waves. At the end of the day everyone was smiling (except mom who got seasick). My old dad butt even got up once after realizing that I had been ignoring everything we learned in the land instruction. The staff were amazingly positive and friendly, it was almost unbelievable. Especially the owner, Ben (we didn't interact with Isha). There are two to three other surf lesson places in that area. They are all run out of vans, and my limited exposure to their interaction with their customers seemed like they were resentful of being there. Kahaluu Bay Surf and Sea is the only one that has an actual property/shop. Gear was top notch. Thanks!

At the recommendation of our hotel concierge, I booked a surf lesson for my kids (8 and 14). Because of the young age of my daughter, I was required to book a semi-private lesson. With this as a backdrop, it is reasonable to expect that (1) an instructor will be assigned that knows how to teach kids and (2) two athletic kids should be able to catch one wave in a two hour time period.

Unfortunately, neither happened. The instructor seemed to be more focused on scaring the kids about the rocks and how dangerous they are rather than giving encouragement. Since I didn't surf, I was able to watch all of this unfold as well as watch the MUCH better instructors from other schools coaching other kids out there.

After 45 minutes, my daughter asked to come in. The instructor dropped her off with me and said she could paddle back out (alone) if she changed her mind and wanted to try again. My daughter said the instructor made her feel scared and didn't let her paddle in a bit closer (to avoid the rocks). The instructor then paddled back out towards my son. Her main job at this point was to tell him when to stand up on his board as the wave came in because he had pretty much figured out the rest on his own.

I would not recommend this company if you are looking for a surf lesson for your kids.

First, I just want to say hey to Ben, Tyler, Cani and the gang! Sorry for the late review... things got crazy over here in March! I know you guys would say no big deal, but still :)

Secondly, if you are looking for friendly, knowledgeable, and kind people – this is a place for you! Not only was Tyler’s instruction and assistance great, but He coached us all morning long. We got some awesome waves in and had a blast! This was our first time surfing and I must say, I think we nailed it! My boyfriend is not a strong or confident swimmer, but these guys made him feel totally safe and he was out there like a pro.

Tyler was an EXCELLENT instructor & friend for the day! Ben and Cani were amazing... and so kind!! What a special place this is and what special people you all are! We can’t wait to come back and next time with friends. Thank you so much, especially Ben, for the hospitality. The day we initially scheduled had weak waves, so Ben wanted to reschedule us so we had the best experience possible. He let us borrow snorkel gear in the meantime and we were lucky enough to see a turtle. Thanks so much for a great time, guys. Oh.... and can’t forget Jane! She’s great! Sending love all the way from Miami! *Shaka*

My husband, 17-year old daughter and I had Tyler for our instructor and he did an amazing job getting all three of us novices up and surfing. He offered gentle tips for improving and was full of fun information about surfing while we waited for the waves. It was a fantastic first surfing experience for all of us. Thank you!

Chris and Matt were great surf instructors. We had a short dry lesson with another instructor that explained basic safety and technique. Then our surf instructors took us out into the bay and helped each of us one by one catch wave after wave. They gave us individual feedback after each ride and helped push us up to speed as we were still learning. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking to learn to surf their first wave! 🤙
