We had the loveliest tour guide, who was passionate and very knowledgeable about the process. Upon first arrival, they give you crisp water with added magnesium, that they get from the salt drying process. We bought a ridiculous amount of salt and magnesium drops after the tour. LOL While you can purchase this salt around the island in stores, it is much cheaper getting it straight from the source. Highly recommend!

Outstanding tour and beautiful sunset views! Since we went in the evening, it was cool enough to go inside the evaporation “greenhouse” ( it would have been too hot during the day) and we were able to taste the delicate “fleur de sel”-like salt crystals. Our guide was highly knowledgeable and personable and also a great photographer as she took sunset photos of everyone. We learned a lot and really enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend this tour, especially the sunset time!

Exceptional. Very informative with not only learning about salt production but history of Hawai’i Island. Our guide Ipolani had a remarkable ability to remember names and engage each guest. She kept the presentation tight and comprehensive.

The tour was interesting and we did learn a bit though would have been nice to see (even a video or photo series?) of how the tubes are filled with water like where it comes in and how it works and then various stages--a picture is worth 1000 words. At the time we visited they were mostly just water and couldn't see any actual salt in there. The drying shed method had some salt ready to see but very small and again couldn't see the mechanism from which it is filled. A video or pictures would have been very helpful. The sell at the end of the products is a little much-better to just offer that the store is there but it's a cute shop and very clean place. The tastings were great and helped us decide which ones to purchase. This would be a gorgeous place for a small wedding or party though and the pretty views were stunning to just walk along the beach with sand and lots of corals and smooth lava rocks. Not sure if the tour is worth $25 but it was interesting. May be better served by having a walk through touring type thing with photos/video to better actually "see" the process.

This tour was one of the highlights of our trip! We booked the Sunset Tour and just being on the Salt Farm grounds was marvelous -- so beautiful. The tour was more than an hour and started with all of us being given water and encouraged to put drops of magnesium in the water; the magnesium was sold there. The tour guide Ipo explained the health benefits of the magnesium but we never felt like we were being "sold." Then we were invited to walk around the gift shop or have a seat on a beautiful deck while we waited for everyone to arrive. Then we all walked over to an inside room with one completely open wall (so you felt you were outside) to all sit down and hear the history of the salt farm. Very interesting! And the room was lovely, very pretty. Then we walked down to the beach, then to the other area of the farm where the salt was in various levels of processing. It was all interesting and Ipo was gregarious, friendly, welcoming and kept our interest! Thank you!

I liked that they shared not only what they are doing but also what kind of things the whole industrial area is doing. The salt tasting was more than we could handle (too many salts) but it was interesting. Salts are at a good price point for bringing home a unique souviner.

We had an excellent time on our tour! Very knowledgeable and informative guide! Our family age range was 7 to 70, and we all had a great time learning about the process and science behind making Kona salt. I would highly recommend adding this to your vacation plans.

We got here too late to take the tour, but Ellie, who was one of the guides, very kindly opened up the shop for us, and told us a lot about the place and how the salt was harvested. She was very informative and we enjoyed talking to her.
Also really appreciated the nice clean bathrooms.
The place is a little hard to find, though, and we almost passed it. FYI Makako Drive is only accessible from the southbound lane of the highway.

Knowledge, beauty and tasty fun. What’s not to like? The Big Island is even bigger for this little company cleaning ocean debris and making deep water salt. Just a very good feeling to be there.

We live on the island but this was our first time to tour. We try to live like tourists from time to time to make sure we are enjoying all there is to offer. This was a well done tour and a good value. We enjoyed the history and cultural information provided and the tour was well paced. Even though the tour was at noon, parasols were provided and we were in and out if the shade. Water was also provided. The tasting was interesting and we couldn’t help but make a few purchases for our enjoyment and adventure at home. I hope all locals and visitors add this stop to their list of things to do and see!
