We had a beautiful day on the water with Jeff. He had world class knowledge of the area and fishing. This is a hands on fishing experience and perfect for anglers of all skill levels. We caught numerous sharks, tuna and mackeral, we lost a few too. All in all it was a great day and we will be back on the water with Jeff our next time in kona!

The share charter went as planned where someone else shared the trip. The first thing the Captain does is gives you a lesson how to keep your hand on the fishing reel when reeling in a fish while sitting in the chair. Make sure you watch a YouTube video on this subject prior to the trip if not done this before. I made the mistake of not knowing how to reel with a fish on and found out Captain Jeff has little patience with anybody with his equipment. So after getting a stiff lecture which is not for the faint of heart, we went fishing. We trolled for several hours and caught some mackerel for the big fish’s later. There were 6 lines in the water at any given time. Each share gets 3 lines no matter how people per share. We than changed gear and went bottom fishing and caught and released two 4’ reef sharks. Changed back to trolling and my wife hooked a Blue Marlin, after a awhile she grew tired and we tried to help her by holding the rod while she reeled, but the Captain was saying due to a possibility of hitting the release switch and asked her if she was done and she “No” the other passenger jumped in and helped despite what what the Captain was saying. She asked if I could jump in and finish bringing it in, I got strapped into the chair and finished bringing it in and watched carefully how the reel was going so not to be lectured again. After securing the Marlin in the boat we than trolled around for several more hours with no action and came back in. Make sure you bring cash for payment, much easier than credit cards, and no checks!

The captain was grumpy because we got the date wrong and were late, even though we had booked the whole boat to ourselves so it didn't inconvenience any other passengers. He yelled at us for not reading his website about seasickness, and to top it off, he didn't find any fish. Not that that is unusual for us, but, the tuna were jumping around us and he never changed gear and went fishing for something else. Very disappointed to rent the entire boat and go away with a sour taste in our mouths.

Just got done with a six hour fishing trip with Jeff. Not one single bite. 6 hours and he did nothing different all day. He changed lures twice in the whole day. I understand it’s called fishing and not catching but at the end of the trip he had the audacity to ask for a tip. Worst fishing experience I’ve ever had and then to insult us by asking for a tip was over the top. I am not one to write reviews, but I think what he did warrants it. If you are looking for a charter in Kona I would stay away from this outfit. They are only about the money.

Response from Capt Jeff R, Owner at Kona Hawaii Fishing with Capt. Jeff Rogers
Responded Aug 19, 2019
I started out in the deep with the offshore lures and then told them I was going to work a ledge where I found a marlin, 3 ahi tunas and a skipjack just the day before and when there, I put out yet another lure (change 1). I worked it for a while but it didn't look as good as the day before so since they were looking for fish to eat, we went in closer to shore to fish for ono. We (hands-on charter) changed ALL of the lures to lures specifically designed for ono (change 2). We targeted ono for the next few hours. 2 newly rigged ono lures were changed out during that time (change 3 & 4). After no bites, we went out to the deep requiring ALL lures be changed again and yet another newly rigged offshore lure was put out with the others (change 5). Every change was explained as to what we were going to be doing so, "did nothing different" and only "changed lures twice" is a full blown lie. Almost everyone pays cash for fishing charters but if someone does use a card, I ask "did you want to put a tip on the card?" because my device won't add that in later. If, after I swipe the card and they say, "Oh, I wanted to put a tip on the card, too late. I don't consider it "asking for a tip", just stating how the credit card transaction works. BTW, I looked up in my records the last time I had a 0 tip customer, it was a year and a half ago but that might be expected from someone who is also a liar.

Great experience and loads of fun. While I fished by wife enjoyed watching the spinner dolphins along side the boat. Did catch and release a nice sized blue marlin. Jeff is a really all around nice guy who knows the Kona waters.
