After much research, we choose Manta Ray Advocates for two reasons; their leadership and stewardship of manta rays and their environment and the small group size. We were so thrilled with this experience from beginning to end- great communication, caring and excellent guidance and instructions and of course, the out-of-this-world, up-close encounter with beautiful, graceful Jolene Ray! The website and waiver make it crystal clear that all participants need to be able to swim in water over your head and have basic ocean snorkeling experience. We had two couples in our group who clearly did not meet these basic requirements and choose to ignore them. C'mon folks- this puts the guides in a terrible position and will absolutely piss off the other people in the group. Having said that, Martina did a masterful job of making sure nobody (or mantas) got injured by flailing limbs attached to clueless people who can't follow directions. Bottom line- make sure you're really up for snorkeling at night, in the dark, in the surf off the beach and you will have a magical, unforgettable experience. Also- spend the extra $10 for the video footage, so cool and well worth it!

Very disappointing experience. No manta sighting for any of the sessions that day. I absolutely understand that they can’t control when/if the manta ray’s will show up, but the treatment of us that just paid a lot of money was unprofessional and discourteous. There should absolutely be some compensation given - perhaps a coupon for a return visit, a partial credit or even offer for merch but they didn’t even give us the picture they took of us. Just be warned that you may not see anything and you will be left with silence and dismissal. It’s been weeks since our experience and it still bothers me. It was a total downer.

We joined the Manta Ray Advocates last week for the night swim. A group ahead of us came in all excited about the manta rays they saw, so our guide hurried us through the "talk" to get us in the water faster (this was appreciated at the time). By the time we got out there, all excited with anticipation, there was not a manta ray to be seen. We floated around for about 30 minutes and then our guide told us she was worried about us getting cold (we gave the ok that we weren't) and she brought us to shore. I get it - we can't control nature and we missed the manta rays. What was extremely disappointing was HOW it was handled. We were a group of now very quiet and disappointed customers and she turns to us and very matter of fact said, "I guess you're the unlucky ones. Good night." We just spent really good money for...a night swim. We weren't even educated about the manta rays because of the rush to get in the water at the beginning. Honestly, it was SUCH a let down and the low point for our vacation. I feel like that would be different had the company given us a coupon to come back to try again sometime...or some portion of a refund or heck, even a free t-shirt. That way we don't walk away feeling like we paid A LOT of money for...well, to borrow a life vest and have someone hold a flashlight so we could go into the ocean at night. I hear this can be an incredible experience...turns out it can also be a huge disappointment especially how this company handles the "no shows".

I have been scuba diving for over 40 years and have snorkeled even longer but had never seen a manta ray in the wild. Fortunately they had been going to Mauna Kea over the past several months and while never a guarantee, sighting was a high likelihood. The mantas did not disappoint and the first group saw two. I was in the second group, entering the water about 45 minutes later, and by then one had already left. However, seeing a single manta was certainly a thrill, this one having a 6-7 foot wing span. Don and Martina did an excellent job of educating their customers and have reasonable guidelines in place to insure an enjoyable time for attendees while minimizing risk and impact to the mantas. Martina and her husband Jim have been doing this longer than anyone on the island and bring a wealth of knowledge about the mantas. I was surprised at how close they came even bumping up against a few of us during feeding. They are such beautiful creatures and it was a privilege to be able to see how graceful they are in their native environment. If you are interested in such an experience I would recommend this company. They care about manta to human interaction and make sure individuals have some snorkeling experience and are educated before going into the water. There are many places around the world I have dived where scuba shops have taken clientele with no experience resulting in complete devastation of local coral reefs, Boracay being one destination that comes to mind. Jim and Martina keep their groups small, do not allow kids under 12, and require at least some snorkeling background to insure both people and mantas have a good experience. You also have the benefit of beach access as opposed to a long ride to/from in a boat, so check them out.

This was a great experience. We had previously done a manta ray experience at keauhou bay and this was much more enjoyable and felt more respectful. We were educated about rays prior to getting into the water which made so much more sense. The water was calm, no boats or fumes nearby. We were amazed at these gentle creatures as well as the colorful tivoli which also ate the plankton. A wonderful, quiet experience where safety and respect for mantas was emphasized.
