Great view of the mountain. Aurther was very knowledgeable about various things including the geology and Hawaiian history. We saw sunset from the top of Mauna Kea even though tropical storm Olivia was rolling in. There was fog in the evening for stargazing but they...More

5/5 and we didn't even go on the tour! Our trip got cancelled due to Hurricane Olivia. No hard feelings, as the staff promptly refunded the entire fee I paid. I'll definitely be back!!!!

OMG! One of the BEST things I've ever done on the Big Island!! Go ahead and rent a 4 wheel drive, and don't forget to acclimate at the Visitor Center!

This was the first time we went. Road in my friend's four wheel drive Navigator. It's about 20minutes to the top, starting from visitor center. You can't go too fast because some of the road is unpaved, lots of blind turns, and almost 40% grade....More

Hiked it up from the visitor's center, me and my 16 year old daughter. You need to be prepared and in decent shape, this is not your local backyard hill. But car ride to the top? I don't think so. We met only a few...More

The Mauna Kea Observatory is a must visit at sunrise. The early morning visit is worth getting up early to see the sunrise on Mauna Kea! Opportunity to take beautiful pictures and observe the beauty! Even if traveling during the summer, pack warm clothing. The...More

Right. Before going to Mauna Kea I read a lot of disinformation, especially about the road to the summit. Some of it on this site! Here is the REAL story. I love high mountains so I really enjoyed this. However, compared to many others I...More

Mauna Kea summit is so beautiful on a clear day. You need warm clothes and a 4-wheel drive vehicle with a low range. On our drive down it started to rain even though the summit was very clear. The visitor center at 9000 ft is...More

Must do in a lifetime. Travel through a deserted area, up to the summit, just in time to see the sunset, above the clouds. Strange atmosphere: impression of being on the moon with observatories. Then look at the stars with a telescope, while drinking hot...More

I think anyone that comes to the big island has to see the summit of Maura Kea. First, it’s 13,700 ft. above sea level. I never had any trouble breathing but I heard others complain while I was there. There is a place to pull...More

It’s a dirt road. But no dangerous sides/edges to worry about. The dirt road is maintained. As long as it’s not raining when when you go you should be fine with just 2 wheel drive.
