Extra early morning (1:55 a.m.) trip but so worth it! I bet Mars looks like this. Very other worldly.

The views surpass your imagination! Stay for sunset! Connect with your divine spirit! Respect Hawaiian culture and history! Appreciate the vastness of the stars and space. See Maui from this vantage point. Soooo worth the drive up!

Do not really need a 4x4 to drive this. Just wicked steep but otherwise the road is fine. The lack of air can be a bit of an issue. Staying at the visitors centre will give you the same or equal to the view from...More

If you don't go to the top of Mauna Kea during a trip to the Hawaiian islands then you have missed out on the most unique feature in the islands. There are tropical beaches all over the world but only one Mauna Kea

A very rough and strenuous 13 miles round trip with 5000 foot elevation change each way. The views are spectacular. Start EARLY and be prepared it will rain, sleet or possibly snow at any time on mauna kea. Would recommend only to the experienced hiker...More

I had a 4x2 small SUV full, and made it up and down without a problem. Just drive on low gear both ways and you should be ok... I think the 4x4 requirement is exaggerated..

It’s a dirt road. But no dangerous sides/edges to worry about. The dirt road is maintained. As long as it’s not raining when when you go you should be fine with just 2 wheel drive.
